Installation and Setup

Use Linux x86-64 with glibc 2.34 or newer. The release notes report SteamOS/Bazzite testing; SDL2, OpenAL and other libraries are bundled.

  1. Download xenogears-port-linux-x86_64-r5-e1625759.tar.gz and optionally SHA256SUMS from Releases.
  2. Unpack into a writable folder: tar xzf xenogears-port-linux-x86_64-r5-e1625759.tar.gz. Enter xeno-r5-e1625759.
  3. Supply your own Xenogears USA Disc 1 raw BIN/CUE (single-track BIN, 718,738,272 bytes). ISO is unsupported. For an owned CHD, the README documents chdman extractcd -i "Xenogears (USA) (Disc 1).chd" -o disc1.cue -ob disc1.bin.
  4. Extract the six required files using the README extraction instructions. Keep disc1.bin, SLUS_006.64, field.bin, menu.bin, shop_menu.bin, member_change_menu.bin and world_map.bin together in your disc folder. Nothing is supplied by this wiki.
  5. Run ./xenogears.sh /path/to/disc. The first run checks and remembers the folder. Later you can run ./xenogears.sh alone. Use XENOGEARS_WINDOWED=1 ./xenogears.sh for a window.

On Steam Deck/Bazzite, do the first launch in Desktop Mode, then choose Steam → Games → Add a Non-Steam Game → Browse and select xenogears.sh. Use the default Gamepad layout and launch from Game Mode.

Build from source: the checked public snapshot cannot build the native PC port because nine required source files are withheld pending removal of retail data. The matching build produces 9 of 10 matching targets; menu.bin does not link. See Building from source for Git, Docker/toolchain, Rust, disc extraction and build steps. A complete development-tree matching build mentioned in release notes does not establish that the public snapshot builds.

Source checked: 2026-09-30, README snapshot.
