Freight Network Features
The MFN is composed of different national node and link networks. For the highway and rail portion of the network, additional network detail is provided for the CMAP region. For the highway portion of the network, the features are year specific. All other network features are static across network years.

Zone System: the freight network leverages CMAP's mesozone system. In this system, most states outside of Illinois are represented by 10 or less centroids, and the CMAP region within Illinois includes more granularity in the zone system.

Node Numbering Convention
-
1-132: CMAP region centroids
-
133-150: CMAP region logistics nodes
-
151-273: National region centroids
-
310: Canada centroid
-
399: Mexico centroid
-
600-693: National region rail nodes
-
694-723: Rail POE nodes
-
724-850: CMAP region rail nodes
-
1201-1278: Inland Waterway nodes
-
1402-1786: National region highway Nodes
-
2005: Canada region highway node
-
2008-2009: Alaska region highway nodes
-
3634-3648: Highway POE nodes
-
5001-25000: CMAP region highway nodes
-
50000-59999: Crude oil network nodes
-
60000-69999: Petroleum network nodes
-
70000-79999: Coal NEC network nodes
Note: in this context, 'national' refers to states within the contiguous USA
Point-of-entry Nodes: The Master Freight Network contains highway and rail links and nodes for both the CMAP region and nationally. There are several 'point-of-entry' (POE) nodes that represent the crossover from the national portion of the network to the CMAP portion of the network.
Logistic Nodes The CMAP region contains special nodes called logistics nodes that represent key locations of mode-specific activity. Current logistics nodes are as follows:
Truck Terminals
- Node 133 - Lake County
- Node 134 - South Cook/Eastern Will
- Node 135 - Fox Valley
- Node 136 - Western Will
- Node 137 - Indiana South Shore
- Node 138 - O'Hare
- Node 139 - Cook Central/Southwest
Airport Terminals
- Node 141 - O'Hare
- Node 142 - Rockford
- Node 143 - South Suburban Airport* (Note: only active after 2030)
- Node 144 - Milwaukee
Water Port Terminals
- Node 145 - Illinois International Port
- Node 146 - Indiana Harbor
Rail Terminals
- Node 140 - Proposed Crete* (Note: this is active or inactive based on the scenario)
- Node 147 - O'Hare
- Node 148 - Cook County Southwest
- Node 149 - Western Will County
- Node 150 - Chicago South
