Usage

Once configured, the plugin's settings panel works like the normal Plasma wallpaper picker, just with extra controls.

Layout

  • Wallpapers tab — grid of all your Workshop-subscribed wallpapers.
  • Settings / General tab — toggle FPS, mute audio, pick the video backend, choose how the wallpaper scales to your screen.
  • Per-wallpaper properties — many Scene wallpapers expose customisation knobs (colours, particle counts, audio reactivity). When the selected wallpaper has them, a Properties section appears under the preview.

Apply your choice with the Apply button at the bottom of the dialog.

Per-screen wallpapers

KDE assigns wallpapers per activity and per screen. To use a different Wallpaper Engine wallpaper on each monitor, repeat First-Run Setup on each screen's wallpaper dialog.

Subscribing to wallpapers

The plugin does not browse the Workshop itself — it reads wallpapers Steam has already downloaded.

  1. Open Steam → Library → Wallpaper Engine.
  2. Click Workshop → browse.
  3. Click Subscribe on any wallpapers you like.
  4. Steam downloads them into <steamlibrary>/steamapps/workshop/content/431960/.
  5. They appear in the plugin's Wallpapers tab once the path is configured.

Unsubscribing in Steam removes the local files; the plugin will stop listing them on its next refresh.

Manual refresh: if a newly subscribed wallpaper doesn't appear, close and re-open the Wallpaper settings dialog (or restart Plasma).

Per-wallpaper properties

Wallpaper Engine authors can expose colour pickers, sliders, checkboxes, and dropdowns through project.json. The plugin renders these in the Properties section under the preview and persists your choices per wallpaper. See User Properties on the Scene Renderer page for what types are supported.

Sound

Most Scene and Video wallpapers include audio. Toggle the Mute setting in the plugin's General tab if you don't want it.

Some Scene wallpapers also react to system audio (e.g. music visualizers). The renderer supports a PipeWire/PulseAudio monitor capture path — see Scene Renderer → Audio.
