Not sure which one?
- Windows: open Settings → System → About and look at System type. "x64-based processor" means Windows; "ARM-based processor" means Windows on ARM.
- Mac: open the Apple menu → About This Mac. "Chip: Apple M…" means Apple silicon; "Processor: Intel" means Intel.
For IT teams: Tern_0.5.1_x64_en-US.msi installs the Windows version with Group Policy or Intune.
You can ignore latest.json and the .app.tar.gz files in the list below. Installed copies of Tern use them to update themselves.
What's new
- Clearer downloads. Every release now starts with a "Which file do I need?" table: each type of computer in plain words, with a direct link to its file, and how to check which one you have.
- A shorter file list. The separate signature files are gone. Updates still check every file's signature; the signatures are now only inside
latest.json. - No changes to the app itself since 0.5.0.
Install notes
- Mac: Tern is not notarized yet. Open it once, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. If macOS still says it is damaged, run
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Tern.appin Terminal. - Windows: if SmartScreen appears, click More info, then Run anyway.
- Updates: from 0.3.1 on, Tern updates itself. From 0.1 or 0.2, install the new version by hand once.

What's new
- A redesign from the ground up. Every screen now uses the same calm set of parts: one toolbar style, one way to show empty, loading, and error states, and the same dialogs everywhere. Works in all themes, dark and light.
- A sidebar to go anywhere. The space switcher, then Home, Tickets, Data, and Search, then your projects with a filter and foldable space groups. Settings is in its footer.
Ctrl \hides it. - Home shows what needs you. Cards for agents that are working, changes ready to review, commits to push or pull (with Push… and Pull… buttons), failing CI, problems, and tickets in progress. Below them, every project in a table you can sort and filter.
- A new title bar. Back and Forward buttons, where you are, the command bar (
Ctrl K), running tasks, Fetch all, and a notification list of everything Tern told you this session. - Faster and easier lists.
- Every project tab has a filter (
/). - Each tab remembers what it had open.
- Long lists stay fast: 5,000 changed files open about 10 times faster than before.
- The tabs never get cut off; they stay as words as long as they can.
- Every project tab has a filter (
- In diffs: wrap long lines (
Alt Z) and jump to the next or previous change (F7/Shift F7). - More in the file views: a filter and arrow keys in JSON, YAML, and TOML trees; a right-click menu and error jumps (
n/N) in logs. - More elsewhere:
- Query history in Data.
- Right-click menus on tickets and on task tabs.
- Clone from a pasted URL.
- Browse buttons for folders in Settings.
- Settings in sections.
- Red buttons on confirmations that cannot be undone, and shortcut keys in menus.
- Copy diagnostics. Settings › Updates (or
Ctrl Shift P) copies versions, your system, recent errors, and the end of Tern's new log file, ready for a bug report. "Report a problem" opens a bug form that asks for it. - Fixed:
- History rows picked up the commit box's style.
- The 7th tab had no shortcut, and there was no command for the CI tab.
- Help (
F1) left out the project commands. - Some themes set the dark color scheme wrongly.
Your settings carry over. Tern moves its saved view settings to new names the first time it starts.
Tern v0.4.0
What's new
- Databases. Data in the title bar (Ctrl Shift D) looks at SQLite, Postgres, SQL Server (and Azure SQL), and Redis. Browse tables or keys, run queries with table and column completion, and see the first 1,000 rows of each result.
- Connections are read-only unless you turn on Allow writes, and each database enforces it. With writes on, Tern asks before a query that changes data.
- Passwords stay in your system keychain. SQL Server can sign in with your Windows account and use named instances.
- Copy schema gives an agent every table and column in a few short lines. A result copies as the query plus a Markdown table, or as TSV, CSV, or JSON.
- A
.dbor.sqlitefile in a repo opens right in the file view.
- More file views.
Ctrl Shift Vswitches between the view and the source.- Images, with a before-and-after view (side by side or swipe) for changed pictures.
- PDFs, in place.
- JSON, YAML, and TOML as a tree you can fold. Mistakes show their line and column.
- CSV and TSV as a table with a fixed header, up to 100 MB.
- Logs that follow the file as it grows, with text or regex filters and errors marked.
- Fixed: Markdown tables no longer squeeze short columns into one letter per line, and folder names in the file list read the right way.

Tern v0.3.1
What's new
- Tern updates itself. From this version on, Tern tells you when a new version is ready and installs it on restart. Updates are signed, and Tern only installs ones from this project.
- About in Settings shows your version, with Check for updates.
- Stage by hunk. In a diff of your local changes, Hunks (Ctrl Shift H) lets you stage, unstage, or discard one block of changes. Discards can be undone.
- Amend the last commit when it is not pushed: add staged changes, change the message, or both.
- Create pull requests on GitHub or Azure DevOps, filled in from your commits. Tern pushes the branch first when needed.
- macOS: the app is now signed as a whole, so macOS 15 and later offer Open Anyway instead of calling it damaged. See the install notes below.

Tern v0.2.0
What's new
- Stash all changes or selected files, new files included. Stashes are listed at the bottom of the Changes tab: review what one holds, pop, apply, or drop it.
- Discard local changes safely: changed files go back to the last commit, new files go to the Recycle Bin, and the status bar offers Undo discard for a few minutes.
- Undo the last commit when it is not pushed yet. Its changes come back staged.
- Worktrees are found reliably when Windows uses a short folder name (like
RUNNER~1).
