Temporary Voice Channels

Join-to-create voice channels. A member joins a hub channel, and the bot creates a voice channel just for them, moves them into it, and makes them its owner. When the last person leaves, the channel is deleted.

How it works

  • The new channel is named from the hub's name template: by default 🔊 their name's channel. It starts at the hub's default user limit, goes in the hub's category (or the one you choose), and copies that category's permissions.
  • The owner can manage their own channel with /vc, and nobody else's.
  • Empty channels are deleted as soon as the last person leaves.
    • Channels that emptied while the bot was offline are cleaned up when it starts, or the next time someone uses the hub.
    • Channels deleted by hand are simply forgotten.

Set up a hub (admins)

Create a new hub channel:

/voice create name:➕ Join to Create category:Voice

Both options are optional. The name defaults to ➕ Join to Create. category is an existing category, picked from Discord’s own list. The bot never creates a category — make it yourself first if you need a new one.

Or use an existing voice channel as a hub:

/voice add hub:#Lobby category:Voice

Without category, temp channels go in the hub's own category.

Manage hubs:

Command Effect
/voice list Every hub, with its settings, and which owner controls are off
/voice edit hub:<pick> … Change a hub's settings. See below
/voice remove hub:<pick> Stop using a hub and delete its channel
/voice audit Find hubs whose channel was deleted, with Prune and Restore buttons
/voice owner-control control:<…> allowed:<yes/no> Allow or stop a /vc control for owners. See below

You can have as many hubs as you like. All of this can also be done from the Admin-Dashboard's Voice tab.

Hub settings

/voice edit hub:<pick> name_template:🎮 {owner}'s squad default_limit:4 min_limit:2 max_limit:10
Option Default Effect
name_template 🔊 {owner}'s channel What temp channels are called. {owner} becomes the owner's name. Up to 100 characters
default_limit 0 (no limit) The user limit a new channel starts with
min_limit, max_limit 0 and 99 The range owners can choose from with /vc limit
category the hub's own The category temp channels go in
use_hub_category — Go back to the hub's own category
  • Give only what you want to change. Everything else is kept.
  • The limits must make sense: the minimum can't be above the maximum, and the default has to be between them. 0 means "no limit", so it's only allowed as a default when the minimum is 0 too.
  • Changes apply to channels created from then on. Channels already open keep the settings they were made with.

Turning owner controls off

Each /vc control can be switched off for owners:

/voice owner-control control:Kick allowed:False
Control Covers
Rename /vc name
User limit /vc limit
Lock and unlock /vc lock, /vc unlock
Kick /vc kick
Transfer ownership /vc transfer

/vc claim always works, so an abandoned channel can always be taken over. /voice disable-owner-kick and /voice enable-owner-kick still work too, as the same switch as Kick.

Owner controls: /vc

Run these in your temp channel's own chat, while you're connected to it. A voice channel's chat is the text box inside it. Admins can switch any of them off except /vc claim (see Turning owner controls off).

Command Effect
/vc name name:<new name> Rename your channel
/vc limit limit:<0–99> Set how many people can join. 0 means no limit. The hub's settings can narrow the range
/vc lock Stop anyone new joining. People already inside can stay
/vc unlock Let anyone join again
/vc kick member:@Someone Disconnect someone from your channel
/vc transfer member:@Someone Make someone else in the channel the owner
/vc claim Take over the channel. See below

Claiming a channel:

The owner is… Who can claim
Gone from the channel Anyone in it
Still in the channel Only a mod
A mod Nobody. Only that owner's own /vc transfer hands it on

For /vc claim, a mod means anyone with Manage Channels, or any staff (an admin or mod role). This is the one place Manage Channels counts as mod.

From the dashboard

The Admin-Dashboard's Voice tab has everything above, plus every temp channel that's open right now:

  • its owner, who's in it, its limit, and whether it's locked
  • Transfer it to someone in it
  • Close it, which disconnects everyone and deletes it

When a hub's channel is deleted

If someone deletes a hub's voice channel in Discord, the bot notices when it starts and sends an admin alert (see Admin-Alerts) for each one, with two buttons:

Both buttons need staff: a mod role, an admin role, or Administrator — the same level /voice itself requires. They work from a DM as well as in the server.

  • Prune: stop tracking the hub.
  • Restore: create a new ➕ Join to Create channel and make it the hub.

The buttons work in the alert channel or from a DM alert. They need Manage Channels in that server. /voice audit shows the same options at any time.

Troubleshooting

What happens Fix
"Run this in #channel's own chat" Open the voice channel's chat and run /vc there
"You need to be connected to a temporary voice channel" Join your temp channel first
"Only the channel owner can do that" Ask the owner, or /vc claim if they've left
"This channel's hub only allows a limit between…" Pick a limit inside that range. Admins set it with /voice edit
"Server admins have turned off /vc … for channel owners" An admin switched that control off with /voice owner-control. Ask them, or use the dashboard's Voice tab
/voice edit: "The default limit … has to be between the minimum … and maximum" Change the default or the range so the default fits. 0 (no limit) needs a minimum of 0
A new temp channel didn't use the new name or limit Hub settings apply to channels created after the change. Leave and rejoin the hub
Joining a hub does nothing The bot needs Manage Channels and Move Members, and to be able to see the hub's category
An empty channel wasn't deleted It's retried at the next restart, or the next time someone uses that hub

Permissions needed: Manage Channels, Move Members, Connect (for /vc lock and /vc unlock) and Manage Roles (channel permissions). See Permissions.
