Being honest, because security tools that overpromise get torn apart:
- It's not a sandbox and not a security boundary. A determined attacker with code execution can bypass static command inspection — shell wrappers (
bash -c), scripts, indirect execution, and encoded commands all defeat it. Use an OS sandbox or container for a hard boundary; restory complements isolation, it doesn't replace it. - Rollback has limits.
undoreverses Git-visible working-tree changes that restory snapshotted. It does not reverse: data already exfiltrated, a completedgit pushor API call, changes outside the worktree, system/package changes, or files excluded by.gitignore(a gitignored.envmay not be in the snapshot). Why not just build this myself in a weekend?
You could build a basic version — but "basic" is the trap. What's here is a
shell-effect classifier that covers command-substitution, pipe-to-shell,
find -delete, redirect writes, and the unquoted-~ expansion class; a shadow
git repo that restores the Git-visible working tree to the session baseline; a live timeline; and an adapter layer for multiple agents. That's the difference between a weekend hack and something you'd actually trust on a real repo. pip install restory takes one second.
Isn't this just Claude Code's permission prompts?
No. Native prompts are per-tool yes/no fatigue, they miss the ~/ expansion and
shell-builtin bypass classes, they show no network-egress view, and they produce
no shareable record. Restory is effect-aware, records the session, and gives you
one-command workspace rollback. (CVE-2026-22708 is an example of why command
allowlists are brittle — restory doesn't claim to remediate that specific Cursor
vulnerability.)
Why not just run the agent in a container? Containers are great for isolation but too heavy for the everyday inner loop — especially on Windows. Restory is a hook, lightweight — no VM or container required.
Can't the classifier be bypassed?
Yes — easily, and I don't hide it. Static inspection of shell can't win against
bash -c, scripts, or encoded commands (my own selfcheck lists known bypasses).
So the classifier is a best-effort pre-execution guard, not a boundary. For real
containment, use an OS sandbox. What restory adds on top: a local audit trail,
visibility, and workspace rollback for the cases it does catch.
Does it send my data anywhere? No. Everything is local — a SQLite store and a shadow git repo on your machine. No accounts, no cloud, no telemetry.
Why not just use Claude Code's sandbox? You should, when you can — restory isn't trying to replace OS-level isolation. restory init installs pre/post tool-use and session-start hooks for your agent (PreToolUse / PostToolUse on Claude Code, the equivalent BeforeTool / AfterTool on Gemini CLI). A thin adapter layer normalizes each agent's hook payload into one canonical shape and formats the decision each agent expects, so the classifier, store, and snapshot logic are shared unchanged across agents. Every tool call the agent makes is classified for blast radius; dangerous effects are blocked with a reason, everything is logged to a local SQLite store, and the working tree is snapshotted to a shadow git repo so undo can restore the Git-visible working-tree changes to the session baseline.
