Updates actions/github-script from 8.0.0 to 9.0.0

Release notes

Sourced from actions/github-script's releases.

v9.0.0

New features:

  • getOctokit factory function — Available directly in the script context. Create additional authenticated Octokit clients with different tokens for multi-token workflows, GitHub App tokens, and cross-org access. See Creating additional clients with getOctokit for details and examples.
  • Orchestration ID in user-agent — The ACTIONS_ORCHESTRATION_ID environment variable is automatically appended to the user-agent string for request tracing.

Breaking changes:

  • require('@actions/github') no longer works in scripts. The upgrade to @actions/github v9 (ESM-only) means require('@actions/github') will fail at runtime. If you previously used patterns like const { getOctokit } = require('@actions/github') to create secondary clients, use the new injected getOctokit function instead — it's available directly in the script context with no imports needed.
  • getOctokit is now an injected function parameter. Scripts that declare const getOctokit = ... or let getOctokit = ... will get a SyntaxError because JavaScript does not allow const/let redeclaration of function parameters. Use the injected getOctokit directly, or use var getOctokit = ... if you need to redeclare it.
  • If your script accesses other @actions/github internals beyond the standard github/octokit client, you may need to update those references for v9 compatibility.

v7.0.1

What's Changed

Full Changelog: actions/upload-artifact@v7...v7.0.1

v7.0.0

v7 What's new

Direct Uploads

Adds support for uploading single files directly (unzipped). Callers can set the new archive parameter to false to skip zipping the file during upload. Right now, we only support single files. The action will fail if the glob passed resolves to multiple files. The name parameter is also ignored with this setting. Instead, the name of the artifact will be the name of the uploaded file.

ESM

To support new versions of the @actions/* packages, we've upgraded the package to ESM.

Updates actions/download-artifact from 7.0.0 to 8.0.1

Release notes

Sourced from actions/download-artifact's releases.

v8.0.1

What's Changed

Full Changelog: actions/download-artifact@v8...v8.0.1

v8.0.0

v8 - What's new

[!IMPORTANT] actions/download-artifact@v8 has been migrated to an ESM module. This should be transparent to the caller but forks might need to make significant changes.

[!IMPORTANT] Hash mismatches will now error by default. Users can override this behavior with a setting change (see below).

Direct downloads

To support direct uploads in actions/upload-artifact, the action will no longer attempt to unzip all downloaded files. Instead, the action checks the Content-Type header ahead of unzipping and skips non-zipped files. Callers wishing to download a zipped file as-is can also set the new skip-decompress parameter to true.

Enforced checks (breaking)

A previous release introduced digest checks on the download. If a download hash didn't match the expected hash from the server, the action would log a warning. Callers can now configure the behavior on mismatch with the digest-mismatch parameter. To be secure by default, we are now defaulting the behavior to error which will fail the workflow run.

ESM

To support new versions of the @actions/* packages, we've upgraded the package to ESM.

Updates github/codeql-action from 4.31.11 to 4.35.3

Release notes

Sourced from github/codeql-action's releases.

v4.35.3

  • Upcoming breaking change: Add a deprecation warning for customers using CodeQL version 2.19.3 and earlier. These versions of CodeQL were discontinued on 9 April 2026 alongside GitHub Enterprise Server 3.15, and will be unsupported by the next minor release of the CodeQL Action. #3837
  • Configurations for private registries that use Cloudsmith or GCP OIDC are now accepted. #3850
  • Best-effort connection tests for private registries now use GET requests instead of HEAD for better compatibility with various registry implementations. For NuGet feeds, the test is now always performed against the service index. #3853
  • Fixed a bug where two diagnostics produced within the same millisecond could overwrite each other on disk, causing one of them to be lost. #3852
  • Update default CodeQL bundle version to 2.25.3. #3865

v4.35.2

  • The undocumented TRAP cache cleanup feature that could be enabled using the CODEQL_ACTION_CLEANUP_TRAP_CACHES environment variable is deprecated and will be removed in May 2026. If you are affected by this, we recommend disabling TRAP caching by passing the trap-caching: false input to the init Action. #3795
  • The Git version 2.36.0 requirement for improved incremental analysis now only applies to repositories that contain submodules. #3789
  • Python analysis on GHES no longer extracts the standard library, relying instead on models of the standard library. This should result in significantly faster extraction and analysis times, while the effect on alerts should be minimal. #3794
  • Fixed a bug in the validation of OIDC configurations for private registries that was added in CodeQL Action 4.33.0 / 3.33.0. #3807
  • Update default CodeQL bundle version to 2.25.2. #3823

v4.35.1

v4.35.0

v4.34.1

  • Downgrade default CodeQL bundle version to 2.24.3 due to issues with a small percentage of Actions and JavaScript analyses. #3762

v4.34.0

  • Added an experimental change which disables TRAP caching when improved incremental analysis is enabled, since improved incremental analysis supersedes TRAP caching. This will improve performance and reduce Actions cache usage. We expect to roll this change out to everyone in March. #3569
  • We are rolling out improved incremental analysis to C/C++ analyses that use build mode none. We expect this rollout to be complete by the end of April 2026. #3584
  • Update default CodeQL bundle version to 2.25.0. #3585

v4.33.0

  • Upcoming change: Starting April 2026, the CodeQL Action will skip collecting file coverage information on pull requests to improve analysis performance. File coverage information will still be computed on non-PR analyses. Pull request analyses will log a warning about this upcoming change. #3562

To opt out of this change:

    • Repositories owned by an organization: Create a custom repository property with the name github-codeql-file-coverage-on-prs and the type "True/false", then set this property to true in the repository's settings. For more information, see Managing custom properties for repositories in your organization. Alternatively, if you are using an advanced setup workflow, you can set the CODEQL_ACTION_FILE_COVERAGE_ON_PRS environment variable to true in your workflow.
    • User-owned repositories using default setup: Switch to an advanced setup workflow and set the CODEQL_ACTION_FILE_COVERAGE_ON_PRS environment variable to true in your workflow.
    • User-owned repositories using advanced setup: Set the CODEQL_ACTION_FILE_COVERAGE_ON_PRS environment variable to true in your workflow.
  • Fixed a bug which caused the CodeQL Action to fail loading repository properties if a "Multi select" repository property was configured for the repository. #3557

  • The CodeQL Action now loads custom repository properties on GitHub Enterprise Server, enabling the customization of features such as github-codeql-disable-overlay that was previously only available on GitHub.com. #3559

  • Once private package registries can be configured with OIDC-based authentication for organizations, the CodeQL Action will now be able to accept such configurations. #3563

  • Fixed the retry mechanism for database uploads. Previously this would fail with the error "Response body object should not be disturbed or locked". #3564

  • A warning is now emitted if the CodeQL Action detects a repository property whose name suggests that it relates to the CodeQL Action, but which is not one of the properties recognised by the current version of the CodeQL Action. #3570

v4.32.6

  • Update default CodeQL bundle version to 2.24.3. #3548

v4.32.5

  • Repositories owned by an organization can now set up the github-codeql-disable-overlay custom repository property to disable improved incremental analysis for CodeQL. First, create a custom repository property with the name github-codeql-disable-overlay and the type "True/false" in the organization's settings. Then in the repository's settings, set this property to true to disable improved incremental analysis. For more information, see Managing custom properties for repositories in your organization. This feature is not yet available on GitHub Enterprise Server. #3507
  • Added an experimental change so that when improved incremental analysis fails on a runner — potentially due to insufficient disk space — the failure is recorded in the Actions cache so that subsequent runs will automatically skip improved incremental analysis until something changes (e.g. a larger runner is provisioned or a new CodeQL version is released). We expect to roll this change out to everyone in March. #3487
  • The minimum memory check for improved incremental analysis is now skipped for CodeQL 2.24.3 and later, which has reduced peak RAM usage. #3515
  • Reduced log levels for best-effort private package registry connection check failures to reduce noise from workflow annotations. #3516

Benchmarks

Benchmark execution time: 2026-05-05 12:37:00

Comparing candidate commit 8b86aab in PR branch dependabot/github_actions/gh-actions-packages-ea1bc4a5fb with baseline commit dc63047 in branch master.

Found 0 performance improvements and 0 performance regressions! Performance is the same for 45 metrics, 1 unstable metrics.

Explanation

This is an A/B test comparing a candidate commit's performance against that of a baseline commit. Performance changes are noted in the tables below as:

  • 🟩 = significantly better candidate vs. baseline
  • 🟥 = significantly worse candidate vs. baseline

We compute a confidence interval (CI) over the relative difference of means between metrics from the candidate and baseline commits, considering the baseline as the reference.

If the CI is entirely outside the configured SIGNIFICANT_IMPACT_THRESHOLD (or the deprecated UNCONFIDENCE_THRESHOLD), the change is considered significant.

Feel free to reach out to #apm-benchmarking-platform on Slack if you have any questions.

More details about the CI and significant changes

You can imagine this CI as a range of values that is likely to contain the true difference of means between the candidate and baseline commits.

CIs of the difference of means are often centered around 0%, because often changes are not that big:

---------------------------------(------|---^--------)-------------------------------->
                              -0.6% 0% 0.3% +1.2%
                                 | | |
lower bound of the CI --' | |
sample mean (center of the CI) -------------' |
upper bound of the CI ----------------------'

As described above, a change is considered significant if the CI is entirely outside the configured SIGNIFICANT_IMPACT_THRESHOLD (or the deprecated UNCONFIDENCE_THRESHOLD).

For instance, for an execution time metric, this confidence interval indicates a significantly worse performance:

This PR was triggering an interesting issue, e.g. https://github.com/DataDog/dd-trace-rb/actions/runs/25367218560/job/74381081764?pr=5676:

  • We compile with -Werror in CI, warnings turn into errors
  • That PR pulls in the latest setup-ruby which pulls in the latest Ruby 3.3 on macOS (3.3.11)
  • Compiling the profiler with that Ruby triggers a warning in the Ruby headers, see first point for why that's an issue

I've pushed a tiny workaround for this -- avoiding the problematic warning (that turns into an error) on that exact configuration.

super("#{newflags} #{$CPPFLAGS}", &block)
end

# Another workaround -- Ruby 3.3.11 on macOS from setup-ruby seems to apply "-Wunused-parameter" _by default_

Mmh, that's really weird because we see in https://github.com/ruby/setup-ruby/actions/runs/24967773621/job/73105449043#step:8:110
that is has -Wno-unused-parameter.
I wonder if it's a mkmf bug changing that or so.

Yeah it's kinda weird -- in https://github.com/DataDog/dd-trace-rb/actions/runs/25367218560/job/74381081764?pr=5676 I don't see the -Wunused-parameter either...

I wonder if it's coming from -Wall or -Wextra?

This is likely what adds the flag too early (before your fix)
while building the libdatadog_api extension

Hmmm I'd be... very surprised if that's the case? E.g. that's the extconf.rb for ext/libdatadog_api -- why would it also apply to the ext/datadog_profiling_native_extension? 👀

Yeah true, confusing but should be unrelated.
From the failed log in https://github.com/DataDog/dd-trace-rb/actions/runs/25367218560/job/74381081764?pr=5676#step:8:94

-Wall -Wextra -Wextra-tokens -Wdeprecated-declarations -Wdivision-by-zero -Wdiv-by-zero -Wimplicit-function-declaration -Wimplicit-int -Wpointer-arith -Wshorten-64-to-32 -Wwrite-strings -Wold-style-definition -Wmissing-noreturn -Wno-cast-function-type -Wno-constant-logical-operand -Wno-long-long -Wno-missing-field-initializers -Wno-overlength-strings -Wno-parentheses-equality -Wno-self-assign -Wno-tautological-compare -Wno-unused-parameter -Wno-unused-value -Wunused-variable -Wmisleading-indentation -Wundef -fno-common -pipe -Werror -std=gnu11 -Wno-unused-function -Wno-declaration-after-statement -Werror-implicit-function-declaration -fvisibility=hidden -Wold-style-definition -Wall -Wextra -arch arm64 -c conftest.c

If we simplify:

-Wall -Wextra ... -Wno-unused-parameter ... -fno-common -pipe -Werror -std=gnu11 ... -fvisibility=hidden -Wold-style-definition -Wall -Wextra

The -Werror being in the middle might apply to -Wall/-Wextra although I think -Wno-unused-parameter should win and disable such warnings.

It seems unexpected to have -Wall -Wextra twice.

I can repro locally, I'll compare to 4.0.3 or 3.3.10 to see what's going on.

So maybe we should delay adding -Wextra similarly to how we're delaying the -Wunused-parameter to only be added after the internal headers get checked...?

Can you try to see if that works for you? 👀

On 3.3.10 it's the same as on 4.0.3:

OK I found the reason, we do:

# Enable all other compiler warnings
append_cflags "-Wall"
append_cflags "-Wextra"

FWIW Ruby already includes these flags as the first two flags of RbConfig::CONFIG["warnflags"] on at least 3.1.7, 3.3.10, 3.3.11, 4.0.3, probably just all versions.

At the point we do these append_cflags we already have -Werror.
And so what happens on 3.3.10 and 4.0.3 is -Wall is accepted by -Wextra isn't for:

require 'mkmf'

p $CFLAGS

append_cflags "-Wall"
append_cflags "-Wextra"

p $CFLAGS

exit!

3.3.10:

$ ruby extconf.rb
"$(cflags) -fno-common -pipe"
checking for whether -Wall is accepted as CFLAGS... yes
checking for whether -Wextra is accepted as CFLAGS... no
"$(cflags) -fno-common -pipe -Wall"

mkmf.log has

/Users/benoit.daloze/.local/share/mise/installs/ruby/3.3.10/include/ruby-3.3.0/ruby/internal/core/rstring.h:398:45: error: missing field 'len' initializer [-Werror,-Wmissing-field-initializers]
  398 |         struct RString retval = {RBASIC_INIT};
      | ^

4.0.3:

$ ruby extconf.rb
"$(cflags) -fno-common -pipe"
checking for whether -Wall is accepted as CFLAGS... yes
checking for whether -Wextra is accepted as CFLAGS... no
"$(cflags) -fno-common -pipe -Wall"

mkmf.log has:

/Users/benoit.daloze/.local/share/mise/installs/ruby/4.0.3/include/ruby-4.0.0/ruby/internal/gc.h:827:46: error: unused parameter 'obj' [-Werror,-Wunused-parameter]
  827 | static inline void rb_gc_force_recycle(VALUE obj){}
      | ^

3.1.7:

$ ruby extconf.rb
"$(cflags) -fno-common -pipe"
checking for whether -Wall is accepted as CFLAGS... no
checking for whether -Wextra is accepted as CFLAGS... no
"$(cflags) -fno-common -pipe"

mkmf.log has:

/Users/benoit.daloze/.local/share/mise/installs/ruby/3.1.7/include/ruby-3.1.0/ruby/internal/core/rstring.h:464:24: warning: default initialization of an object of type 'struct RString' with const member leaves the object uninitialized [-Wdefault-const-init-field-unsafe]
  464 |         struct RString retval;
      | ^
...

But on 3.3.11 both flags get added:

$ ruby extconf.rb
"$(cflags) -fno-common -pipe"
checking for whether -Wall is accepted as CFLAGS... yes
checking for whether -Wextra is accepted as CFLAGS... yes
"$(cflags) -fno-common -pipe -Wall -Wextra"

So because warnings have been fixed on 3.3.11 we add an extra -Wextra flag after the -Werror which (clearly seems to) overrides the earlier -Wno-unused-parameter and causes the error.

I think the fix is removing our:

append_cflags "-Wall"
append_cflags "-Wextra"

and instead rely on Ruby adding them (potentially we can also assert that).
These flags are as we see very sensitive to order and should always be at the start, otherwise it's mayhem.

I confirm these flags have always been there since Ruby 1.9:

@all-ruby -e 'p RbConfig::CONFIG["warnflags"][0..13]'

1.8
-e:1: uninitialized constant RbConfig (NameError)

1.9 -- 4.0+prism
"-Wall -Wextra "
