Subly 1.2 — learns how you spell

Choose a tag to compare

@DhananjayBhosale DhananjayBhosale released this 05 Oct 09:10

Subly makes captions for your videos right on your Mac: the transcript, the same words in English letters (for example Hinglish), and a translation, all in sync. Nothing is uploaded.

New in 1.2: Subly learns how you spell

Hinglish has no single spelling. You might write "ye", someone else "yah" or "yeh". Now Subly follows you:

  • Fix a word once. Change "yah" to "ye" in a caption and Subly remembers it.
  • Every new caption uses your spelling, in new videos, Listen Again, re-cuts and added tracks.
  • Fix the rest in one click. A banner offers to fix the other places in the video, or to take it back with Don't Learn. Undo takes it back too.
  • You're in charge. Settings › Languages › Your spellings lists what Subly learned. Forget one word or all of them, or switch learning off.
  • It learns only true respellings (same sounds, different letters) in English-letters captions. Rewording, grammar fixes and punctuation are never learned. In transcripts and translations, only brand capitals like "iPhone" are.

Also in this release

  • The app's acknowledgements now include the full Whisper (MIT) and Apache 2.0 licence texts.
  • A smaller download: the app no longer carries debug data, and there are no build paths inside.
  • Clearer wording: automatic language detection needs the free Whisper model.

Install

  1. Download Subly.dmg below, open it and drag Subly to Applications.
  2. Open Subly. Because it isn't notarized by Apple yet, macOS says it can't check it. Click Done.
  3. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway next to Subly. You only do this once.

Needs an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 26 or later. Free and open source under the MIT licence.

Subly 1.1

Subly makes subtitles on your Mac: the transcript, the same words in English letters (for example Hinglish), and a translation, all on one timing grid. Nothing is uploaded.

What's new in 1.1

A simpler app in three steps: Add Video, Choose, Edit & Share

  • Your projects show as a grid with thumbnails. Select several and move them to the Trash at once.
  • With the free Whisper model installed, Subly listens to the start of each video and sets the spoken language for you. Without it, choose the language or press Detect.
  • Pick the captions you want as cards. The translation card has its own language menu, and "Remember these choices" starts the next video the same way.
  • "Best for your language" recommends a speech model, and you can still pick another.

Editing

  • Click a caption on the video to fix a word. Click anywhere else, or press Return or Escape, to save it.
  • Drag a caption to move it. While editing, drag the ↕ grip.
  • New Sync buttons move every caption 0.05 s earlier or later, to match your voice exactly.
  • Save a video with the captions drawn in, for Reels and Shorts, with caption looks and animations. Or save SRT, VTT, TXT or JSON.

Better captions

  • Long videos are cut at pauses and keep real word timings, so captions stay in sync to the end.
  • No more invented captions over silence or music, and the first words are no longer dropped.
  • Add names and brands said in the video so they are spelled right.
  • Japanese and Chinese captions break between words, and Japanese gets proper romaji.
  • Listen Again redoes the whole video, and Undo brings the old captions back.

Fixes

  • Many fixes from independent reviews, including a crash in the spelling polish, hangs when cancelling, edits lost on quit, and subtitle files replaced without asking.
  • Subly asks before quitting while it is working or if the last save failed.
  • Deleted projects always go to the Trash.

Good to know

  • Speech models (Whisper, Apex for Hinglish) download inside the app, under Speech Models, only when you ask.
  • Translation uses Apple's on-device translation. macOS may ask to download a language pair the first time.
