DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications 1.0.1

A fix for Show Notification's Send To: All TVs, the command that shows a pop-up on every TV in the project, one copy of the driver per TV.

DirectorLink is an independent project, not affiliated with Control4 or Snap One. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Google, Amazon or the makers of the TV apps it works with. Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV are trademarks of their owners.

Check the download against SHA256SUMS.txt. Keep the file name exactly as it is: a browser's (1).c4z copy installs as a separate driver.

Changes

  • Send To: All TVs looks for the other copies under the file name the controller has for the driver, as well as under DirectorLink-Android-TV.c4z.
  • A Show Notification from another copy is taken whichever way the controller hands it over.
  • When no other copy is found, the log says what the controller listed and this copy's device number.

Updating

Update the driver with Driver → Add or Update Driver or Agent: every copy in the project updates, and settings and programming stay. Requirements: Control4 OS 3.3.0 or newer, Composer Pro, a TV with Google TV or Android TV with PiPup — TV Notifications installed. Full steps: directorlink.io/drivers/android-tv.

Known issues

  • Send To: All TVs was tested with two copies of the driver on one TV, with the controller's part played by the tests, not yet with several TVs on a Control4 controller. PiPup shows one pop-up at a time, so two copies on the same TV show one pop-up.
  • Only PiPup — TV Notifications by Alexander Savin: other apps called PiPup take other requests and do not work with the driver.

DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications 1.0.0

First full release. Put the free PiPup — TV Notifications app on a TV with Google TV or Android TV, add the driver, and DirectorLink's notifications pop up on the TV with a picture: who is at the door or the gate. Composer programming can show its own, on one TV or on all of them.

Free, open-source Control4 driver for TVs with Google TV or Android TV. Part of DirectorLink Drivers. Free. No subscription, no license key, no account with us. Works on its own: DirectorLink is not required.

Tested on

A Sony XR-77A95L (Google TV) with PiPup 0.3.4, from a Control4 controller: Find TVs found it (PiPup answers), Test Notification and Show Notification with a picture (fetched by the controller and sent inside the pop-up) showed on it. From a computer on the TV's network, running the driver's own code: pop-ups in English and Hebrew, pictures inline and by address.

What it does

  • On the home network only, with PiPup — TV Notifications by Alexander Savin (free on Google Play) on the TV. No cloud, no account.
  • The picture inside the pop-up: DirectorLink's picture with a ring, or a camera's snapshot from programming, fetched by the controller (a login in a camera's address is sent as a login), so the TV never has to reach it.
  • Only when the screen is on: the driver asks PiPup first. Off, or no answer within 3 seconds, the pop-up is dropped with one log line. It never turns the TV on.
  • One copy per TV, each with its own choice of kinds (Doorbell, Camera Alerts, Doors and Gates, Alarm, Other), Quiet Hours, and where and how long the pop-up shows.
  • Show Notification (Title, Message, Picture URL, Send To): Send To All TVs reaches every TV's copy with one command.
  • One pop-up every 5 seconds at most, a doorbell or the alarm first; text as sent, Hebrew included.
  • Find TVs lists the TVs on the network, marking the ones where PiPup answers.
  • PiPup Token and PiPup Port when PiPup's settings ask for them; Status says when PiPup wants a token or its IP allowlist leaves the controller out.
  • With DirectorLink 1.13: the DirectorLink notification agreement, version 1, the same as DirectorLink · LG TV Notifications.

Installing

  1. On the TV, install PiPup — TV Notifications from Google Play, open it once, select Grant display permission, and press its test button.
  2. Upload the driver with Driver → Add or Update Driver or Agent.
  3. Search DirectorLink, add DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications to the TV's room (once per TV), and pick the TV in TVs Found (marked PiPup answers) or type its IP address.
  4. Run Test Notification.

Requirements: Control4 OS 3.3.0 or newer, Composer Pro, a TV with Google TV or Android TV (Android 7 or newer). Full steps and the list of TVs: directorlink.io/drivers/android-tv.

Updating

  • From 1.0.0-beta.3: the list's first TV becomes TV IP Address; the log names the other TVs of the list: add a copy of the driver for each.
  • From 1.0.0-beta.2: settings and programming stay.
  • From 1.0.0-beta.1: install PiPup on the TV; the TV App property is gone.

Known issues

  • Only PiPup — TV Notifications by Alexander Savin: other apps called PiPup take other requests and do not work with the driver.
  • Send To All TVs reaches the other copies with C4:SendToDevice; tested against the fake Director, not yet with several TVs on a real controller.
  • Fire TV has no Google Play: PiPup's APK can be installed by hand there, not tested.

DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications DirectorLink-Android-TV.c4z

Check the download against SHA256SUMS.txt. Keep the file name exactly as it is: a browser's (1).c4z copy installs as a separate driver.

Tested on

  • From a Control4 controller (1.0.0-beta.2, the same way of talking to PiPup): a Sony XR-77A95L (Google TV) with PiPup 0.3.4. Find TVs found it (PiPup answers); Test Notification and a pop-up with a picture showed (the picture fetched by the controller and sent inside the pop-up).
  • Several TVs (this version), from a computer on the same network running the driver's own code: a list of two, the Sony and a box without PiPup. Shown on the Sony; the box named in the log and in Status (PiPup not answering).

What changed

  • TV IP Addresses: the TVs, separated by commas (192.168.1.50, 192.168.1.51, or ip:port for a TV whose PiPup uses another port), up to 16. It replaces TV IP Address; from beta.1 or beta.2 the driver moves the TV's address into it by itself.
  • TVs: each TV, its state and PiPup's version. It replaces TV.
  • Every TV at once: the picture is fetched once and shown on every TV whose screen is on. Notification Shown when at least one TV showed it, Notification Failed when none did. The log says on which TVs, and why not on the others.
  • Each TV is checked on its own; Status says Ready: 2 TVs, or which TVs are not ready and why.
  • TVs Found: picking a TV adds it to the list.
  • TVs that need other settings (Quiet Hours for a child's room) get a second copy of the driver.

Installing

  1. On each TV, install PiPup — TV Notifications from Google Play, open it once, select Grant display permission, and press its test button.
  2. Upload the driver with Driver → Add or Update Driver or Agent.
  3. Search DirectorLink, add DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications once, and pick each TV in TVs Found (marked PiPup answers), or type the addresses in TV IP Addresses.
  4. Run Test Notification.

Requirements: Control4 OS 3.3.0 or newer, Composer Pro, TVs with Google TV or Android TV (Android 7 or newer). Full steps and the list of TVs: the README.

Updating

  • From 1.0.0-beta.2 or beta.1: Driver → Add or Update Driver or Agent with this file. The TV's address moves to TV IP Addresses; the other settings and the programming stay. From beta.1, install PiPup on the TV.

Known issues

  • Several TVs from a Control4 controller not yet confirmed (one TV was).
  • Fire TV has no Google Play: PiPup's APK can be installed by hand there, not tested.

DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications 1.0.0-beta.2

Beta. The driver now works with one TV app, PiPup — TV Notifications by Alexander Savin (free on Google Play), set up as PiPup's own documentation describes it, and sends the picture inside the pop-up. Tested on a Sony XR-77A95L (Google TV) with PiPup 0.3.4.

Why beta.1 showed nothing

Beta.1 spoke to two other TV apps: "Notifications for Android TV" (its default, port 7676) and a different fork of PiPup. On a TV with Alexander Savin's PiPup nothing answered on port 7676, so the test notification failed. Beta.2 speaks to that PiPup only, the way it documents: /status before each pop-up, then /notify.

Tested on

A Sony XR-77A95L (Google TV) with PiPup 0.3.4, from a computer on the TV's network running the driver's own code: Test Notification, a DirectorLink doorbell notification in Hebrew, Show Notification, a picture carried inline and a picture by address, all shown. Not yet confirmed from a Control4 controller.

What changed

  • One app: PiPup — TV Notifications (Google Play: nyc.savin.pipup). The TV App property is gone. Other apps called PiPup take other requests and do not work with the driver.
  • PiPup's API as it documents it: GET /status before each pop-up (a screen that is off gets nothing), POST /notify with JSON, GET /ping for Find TVs.
  • New properties: PiPup Port (7979) and PiPup Token (only when a token is set in PiPup; sent as Authorization: Bearer, never logged). Status says when PiPup wants a token, or when its IP allowlist leaves the controller out.
  • The picture inside the pop-up: the driver fetches the notification's picture itself (on the controller, so 127.0.0.1 works, and a login in a camera's address is sent as a login) and sends it inline. The TV never has to reach the picture's address. A picture not fetched within 2 seconds, or larger than 1.5 MB, goes as its address.
  • Find TVs marks the TVs where PiPup answers.
  • No more binary data in requests: the icon the other app needed is gone.

Installing

  1. On the TV, install PiPup — TV Notifications from Google Play, open it once, select Grant display permission, and press its test button.
  2. Upload the driver with Driver → Add or Update Driver or Agent.
  3. Search DirectorLink, add DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications to the TV's room, and pick the TV in TVs Found (marked PiPup answers) or type its IP address.
  4. Run Test Notification.

Requirements: Control4 OS 3.3.0 or newer, Composer Pro, a TV with Google TV or Android TV (Android 7 or newer). Full steps and the list of TVs: the README.

Updating

  • From 1.0.0-beta.1: Driver → Add or Update Driver or Agent with this file, then install PiPup on the TV (above). The TV App property is gone; the other settings and the programming stay.

Known issues

  • Not yet confirmed from a Control4 controller (the reason it is still a beta).
  • Find TVs, from a Control4 driver, is not yet confirmed on a real controller: type the IP address when it finds nothing (PiPup's screen shows it).
  • Fire TV has no Google Play: PiPup's APK can be installed by hand there, not tested.

DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications 1.0.0-beta.1

Beta. First release. Put a free app on a TV with Google TV, Android TV or Fire TV, add the driver, and DirectorLink's notifications pop up on the TV with a picture: who is at the door or the gate. Composer programming can show its own, with any camera's snapshot.

Free, open-source Control4 driver for TVs with Google TV, Android TV or Fire TV. Part of DirectorLink Drivers. Free. No subscription, no license key, no account with us. Works on its own: DirectorLink is not required.

DirectorLink is an independent project, not affiliated with Control4 or Snap One. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Google, Amazon or the makers of the TV apps it works with. Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV are trademarks of their owners.

This beta sends what the two apps take, as Home Assistant, FHEM and PiPup's own documentation describe it, and passes its tests against fake apps, but it has not run on a real TV yet. It stays a beta until an installer's log confirms the pop-ups, the picture, Hebrew text and a TV in standby with both apps. If you try it, please send the log (see Trying the beta in the README).

DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications DirectorLink-Android-TV.c4z

Check the download against SHA256SUMS.txt. Keep the file name exactly as it is: a browser's (1).c4z copy installs as a separate driver.

What it does

  • On the home network only, with a free app on the TV: Notifications for Android TV (Google Play; Notifications for Fire TV in the Amazon Appstore), the default, or PiPup (installed from a computer with its script; works on older TVs and tells the driver when the screen is off).
  • The picture in the pop-up: DirectorLink's picture with a ring, or a camera's snapshot address from programming. The TV fetches it on the home network.
  • Only when the TV answers: off, or no connection within 3 seconds, the pop-up is dropped with one log line. With PiPup, a screen that is off gets nothing. It never turns the TV on.
  • Your choice per TV: Doorbell, Camera Alerts, Doors and Gates, Alarm, Other (Doorbell and Alarm on), Quiet Hours, and where and how long the pop-up shows.
  • One pop-up every 5 seconds at most, a doorbell or the alarm first.
  • Text as sent, Hebrew and other right-to-left languages included.
  • Find TVs: lists the TVs on the network, the ones where the app answers first; or type the TV's IP address.
  • Programming: Show Notification (Title, Message, Picture URL); Notification Shown, Notification Failed; LAST_NOTIFICATION.
  • With DirectorLink 1.13: the DirectorLink notification agreement, version 1, the same as DirectorLink · LG TV Notifications.

Installing

  1. On the TV, install Notifications for Android TV from Google Play, open it once and allow what it asks (Notification access, Display over other apps), and restart the TV. Or install PiPup with its script.
  2. Upload the driver with Driver → Add or Update Driver or Agent.
  3. Search DirectorLink, add DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications to the TV's room, choose the TV App, and pick the TV in TVs Found (or type its IP address).
  4. Run Test Notification.

Requirements: Control4 OS 3.3.0 or newer, Composer Pro, a TV with Google TV, Android TV or Fire TV (Fire OS 7 or 8). Full steps and the list of TVs: the README.

Known issues

  • Not yet confirmed on a real TV (the reason for the beta).
  • Notifications for Android TV has no published API: the driver sends what Home Assistant and FHEM send. That request carries a small icon as binary data; that Control4's web client passes it on unchanged is not yet confirmed on a controller.
  • Notifications for Android TV cannot tell whether the screen is on: a TV that keeps its network on in standby takes the pop-up and nobody sees it. PiPup can tell.
  • A login in a picture's address (http://user:password@...) may not be passed on by the TV's app.
  • Find TVs, from a Control4 driver, is not yet confirmed on a real controller: type the IP address when it finds nothing.
