DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications 1.0.0-beta.1

Beta. First release. Put a free app on a TV with Google TV, Android TV or Fire TV, add the driver, and DirectorLink's notifications pop up on the TV with a picture: who is at the door or the gate. Composer programming can show its own, with any camera's snapshot.

Free, open-source Control4 driver for TVs with Google TV, Android TV or Fire TV. Part of DirectorLink Drivers. Free. No subscription, no license key, no account with us. Works on its own: DirectorLink is not required.

DirectorLink is an independent project, not affiliated with Control4 or Snap One. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Google, Amazon or the makers of the TV apps it works with. Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV are trademarks of their owners.

This beta sends what the two apps take, as Home Assistant, FHEM and PiPup's own documentation describe it, and passes its tests against fake apps, but it has not run on a real TV yet. It stays a beta until an installer's log confirms the pop-ups, the picture, Hebrew text and a TV in standby with both apps. If you try it, please send the log (see Trying the beta in the README).

Driver in Composer File
DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications DirectorLink-Android-TV.c4z

Check the download against SHA256SUMS.txt. Keep the file name exactly as it is: a browser's (1).c4z copy installs as a separate driver.

What it does

  • On the home network only, with a free app on the TV: Notifications for Android TV (Google Play; Notifications for Fire TV in the Amazon Appstore), the default, or PiPup (installed from a computer with its script; works on older TVs and tells the driver when the screen is off).
  • The picture in the pop-up: DirectorLink's picture with a ring, or a camera's snapshot address from programming. The TV fetches it on the home network.
  • Only when the TV answers: off, or no connection within 3 seconds, the pop-up is dropped with one log line. With PiPup, a screen that is off gets nothing. It never turns the TV on.
  • Your choice per TV: Doorbell, Camera Alerts, Doors and Gates, Alarm, Other (Doorbell and Alarm on), Quiet Hours, and where and how long the pop-up shows.
  • One pop-up every 5 seconds at most, a doorbell or the alarm first.
  • Text as sent, Hebrew and other right-to-left languages included.
  • Find TVs: lists the TVs on the network, the ones where the app answers first; or type the TV's IP address.
  • Programming: Show Notification (Title, Message, Picture URL); Notification Shown, Notification Failed; LAST_NOTIFICATION.
  • With DirectorLink 1.13: the DirectorLink notification agreement, version 1, the same as DirectorLink · LG TV Notifications.

Installing

  1. On the TV, install Notifications for Android TV from Google Play, open it once and allow what it asks (Notification access, Display over other apps), and restart the TV. Or install PiPup with its script.
  2. Upload the driver with Driver → Add or Update Driver or Agent.
  3. Search DirectorLink, add DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications to the TV's room, choose the TV App, and pick the TV in TVs Found (or type its IP address).
  4. Run Test Notification.

Requirements: Control4 OS 3.3.0 or newer, Composer Pro, a TV with Google TV, Android TV or Fire TV (Fire OS 7 or 8). Full steps and the list of TVs: the README.

Known issues

  • Not yet confirmed on a real TV (the reason for the beta).
  • Notifications for Android TV has no published API: the driver sends what Home Assistant and FHEM send. That request carries a small icon as binary data; that Control4's web client passes it on unchanged is not yet confirmed on a controller.
  • Notifications for Android TV cannot tell whether the screen is on: a TV that keeps its network on in standby takes the pop-up and nobody sees it. PiPup can tell.
  • A login in a picture's address (http://user:password@...) may not be passed on by the TV's app.
  • Find TVs, from a Control4 driver, is not yet confirmed on a real controller: type the IP address when it finds nothing.
