Description

Diffuse is a Schroeder allpass filter, a common building block for reverbs and physical modelling algorithms.

Features

  • Gain control with positive and negative gain
  • Dry/wet mix control
  • 1V/Oct frequency input
  • Linear frequency modulation
  • CV modulation of gain and dry/wet mix
  • Separate wet output
  • Polyphonic

Example use cases

  • Physical modelling
  • Reverbs
  • Diffusion/Dispersion
  • Comb filtering (Gain at 0%)
  • Filter pinging

Usage

Frequency ranges from 32 to 20000 Hz. Close to the maximum frequency, the effect is largely phase rotation, much like more standard allpass filters. As the frequency is decreased, there is an increasing softening and diffusion of transients. At very low frequency (~130 Hz and lower), the effect becomes similar to a slapback delay.

Gain must be above zero for Diffuse to have an effect, otherwise, it will only delay the signal. This can be used as a comb filter by using the Mix output.

At low to mid gain, there is a "diffusion" effect, softening and diffusing transients.

At high gain, the effect will have a long, ringing "tail", which increases in length but loses volume as the gain increases. At these gain levels, the filter can be pinged like a resonant filter.

At 100% gain, there will be no effect on the signal, essentially passing the input signal through unchanged. At -100%, the effect is the same, but the signal is inverted.
