SpaceKnife 0.3.3 (pre-release)

A disk usage analyzer that shows what fills your drives, on Windows, Linux and macOS. SpaceKnife is an independent project inspired by SpaceSniffer and is not affiliated with SpaceSniffer or its author.

This is a pre-release. Windows and Linux builds are not code-signed; the macOS build is ad-hoc signed, not notarized.

• From 0.3.2: click the badge at the top right; the card downloads the file for your installation and checks its SHA-256. Snapshots and settings stay.
• Windows: run the new installer over the old one. It is unsigned: SmartScreen › "More info › Run anyway".
• macOS: drag into Applications; on first launch, System Settings › Privacy & Security › "Open Anyway" (steps).
• Portable: unzip anywhere; everything is kept in data next to the app. To upgrade by hand, replace all but data.
• Linux: deb / rpm go to /opt/SpaceKnife (command spaceknife). The AppImage needs FUSE 2 (libfuse2) or --appimage-extract-and-run; AppImageUpdate updates it in place.
• Checksums: SHA256SUMS.txt (installers), SHA256SUMS-portable-*.txt, SHA256SUMS-mac-*.txt.

What's new

• Two ways to update. New versions are downloaded and checked in the background; the update card then offers:
  • Seamless update: the Windows installer runs silently, a portable copy's files are swapped by the new version's own backend (no script; data stays, a failed swap rolls back), an AppImage replaces its file. SpaceKnife reopens.
  • The classic way: Run the installer (with its wizard), Open the disk image / Open the package (macOS, deb, rpm), or Replace it yourself (portable, AppImage).
• Never installs by itself. Checking and downloading may be automatic; installing always waits for your click. No auto-install option will ever be added.
• Skip a whole series. Skip 0.4.x (Skip 1.x for a major version) mutes the card, dialog, badge and automatic download for every release of that series, across restarts; other series still show. Settings › About & updates › Turn prompts back on undoes it. Closing a card still hides only that version.
• Nothing left behind by updates. Update files go to updates in the data folder, not Downloads; each start deletes those of the running version or older.
• Clean uninstall on Windows. Caches and downloaded updates go; the new Your data page keeps snapshots, settings and logs unless you tick the box (silent uninstall: --delete-app-data).
• Disks page (title bar, start page, palette): every disk, scanned or not, as aligned dashboard cards.
  • Summary: capacity, free space, volumes, fastest link, capacity by storage type, and findings: nearly full volumes, slow links (PCIe 5.0 drive in a 4.0 slot, USB 3 reader on USB 2, SATA on a narrow controller), fast growth since the last snapshot, health warnings (critical, media errors, wear, spare blocks, heat).
  • Per disk: fullness, link vs top rate, lifetime and since-boot reads / writes (NVMe SMART, ATA Device Statistics), temperature, power-on time, SSD life left; its volumes with class mix, largest folders and snapshot growth.
  • No admin rights on Windows and macOS (NVMe via IOKit). On Linux, Read with administrator rights… asks once (polkit); a read-only helper reads NVMe and SATA, USB enclosures included.
• About & updates settings page: version and install type, last / next check, the update card, component versions (Copy version info), and the last 30 releases with notes in your language.
• Recycle Bin effect. Trash contents (Windows $Recycle.Bin, macOS ~/.Trash / .Trashes, freedesktop Trash on Linux) are hatched inside a marching coral outline in all three views, labeled with what emptying frees. Settings › Appearance makes it still or off; Reduce motion stills it. The Recycle Bin chip (R) leaves the bin out of the picture; its default for new views is in Settings › Visualization.
• Headless mode. SpaceKnife --headless serves the interface to a browser, without a window; --listen 0.0.0.0 opens it to the network after a red warning you confirm with Y (--yes for services). Random-token link, backend on 127.0.0.1, HTTPS via --tls-cert / --tls-key; runs on display-less Linux servers. In the browser, paths are typed and deletes happen on the server (5-second undo kept). On Windows run SpaceKnife without .exe so the terminal waits. Docs.
• New Code and Data classes, far less Other. Code: sources and build / package output (py, ts, pyc, pdb, whl…); Data: weights, datasets, databases (safetensors, gguf, onnx, parquet, sqlite…). Other classes learned RAW, design, VM, crash-dump, e-book and mail formats: 430+ extensions. On a dev disk Other fell from 60% to 34% of space (78% → 33% of files). An edited class table stays; Restore default classes switches.
• Folders decide their files' class. Recognised game installs are the new Games class whatever the extension (Steam, Epic, GOG, Xbox, EA, Ubisoft, Riot, HoYoPlay / miHoYo, Hypergryph, Unity / Unreal / Godot, Blizzard, Minecraft, saves); project folders (.git, package.json, Cargo.toml, *.sln…) are Code; model caches Data; system metadata and unclassed files of installed software Programs. A lone package.json in Downloads doesn't count. Other: 34% → 2% on a 2.7 TB dev disk. Classes shows the by-extension view, Details says why, and Classify in the context menu sets your own (listed in Settings › File classes).
• Hover a class to see where it is. Hovering a row or bar segment on Classes dims the rest of the picture and outlines that class's files, blocks and folders; nothing is filtered.
• Resizable details panel: drag its edge (280–640 px), double-click to reset; the width is remembered.
• Reorder tabs: drag sideways (Esc cancels) or Ctrl+Shift+PgUp / PgDn (also in the palette).

Fixes

• Classes page no longer wraps: a class-colored bar, then one aligned row per class (files, size, share); counts shorten when narrow; click to filter. Code and Data fold away under 2% and 8 GB (Show all classes).
• TypeScript is no longer video: .ts / .mts over 16 MB, or over 1 MB and a whole number of 188-byte packets (192 for .mts), are video; the rest is code. Nothing is read from the file.
• A filter can always be left: Clear filter in Matches, × on the match bar, and Esc on the picture when nothing is selected.
• Singular English labels ("1 file", "1 largest file"). Thanks to @nimalagnanaguru (#16).
• Deleted space no longer shows as unknown: deletions in a monitored scan (Explorer, emptying the bin, other programs) now free space at once; views follow the volume's free space after each change.

Known limitations

• Not code-signed or notarized; deb and rpm not yet tested on clean RHEL 9 / Ubuntu 22.04.
• No seamless update yet on macOS, deb and rpm: the card opens the disk image or package.

新功能

  • 经典方式：「运行安装程序」（带向导）、「打开磁盘映像」/「打开安装包」（macOS、deb、rpm），或「自己替换」（便携版、AppImage）。
• 从不自己安装：检查和下载可以自动，安装一律等你点击；以后也不会加自动安装的选项。
• 跳过一整个系列：「跳过 0.4.x」（大版本是「跳过 1.x」）让这个系列的所有版本都不再弹卡片、对话框和徽章，也不自动下载，重启后依然有效；其他系列照常提示。在「设置 › 关于与更新」点「恢复提示」撤销。关闭卡片仍只关这一个版本。
• 更新不留残余：更新文件放在数据文件夹的 updates 里而非「下载」；每次启动删除当前及更旧版本的更新文件。
• Windows 干净卸载：删除缓存和下载的更新；新的「你的数据」页默认保留快照...

• Upgrading from 0.3.1: SpaceKnife shows a badge at the top right. Click it for a summary and a one-click download of the right file for your installation, checked against the published SHA-256. Snapshots and settings stay.

What's new

• Help inside the app: the documentation now ships with SpaceKnife and works offline.
  • F1 opens the page about where you are: the start page opens "Your first scan", the filter box opens "Filters", and the command palette opens its own page.
  • You can also open it with the Help button in the title bar or the Help command in the palette.
  • The help has its own search (/). View on the website opens the same page in your browser.
• F5, Shift+F5 and Ctrl+S now work for Rescan current view, Rescan everything and Save snapshot. They also work while you type in the filter box.
  • Where the palette would show the command grayed out, the key does nothing and a note at the bottom of the window says why.
  • Held down, a key runs once.
• AppImage updates: the AppImage carries update information, and each release has a .zsync file next to it, so AppImageUpdate and AppImageLauncher can update it in place.

Fixes

• Rescan current view in a comparison: it used to read an unrelated folder of the scan. It is now unavailable there and says why.
• Rescan current view at the top of a scan of several locations: it used to do nothing. It now reads every location again.
• Corrected setting descriptions: theme, animation frame rate, low I/O priority when idle, and live monitoring on Linux.
• Default for incremental rescans is grayed out: nothing uses it yet.

Known limitations

• Not code-signed and not notarized. The deb and rpm packages have not yet been installed on clean RHEL 9 or Ubuntu 22.04 machines.

修复

• 对比视图里的「重新扫描当前视图」：以前会去重扫扫描结果里另一个不相干的文件夹；现在在对比视图里不可用，并提示原因。
• 多个扫描位置的最顶层：「重新扫描当前视图」以前什么都不做，现在会把每个位置都重读一遍。
• 设置说明更正：主题、动画帧率、空闲时使用低 I/O 优先级、Linux 上的实时监控。
• 「增量重扫默认」：还没有接入，现在显示为灰色。

已知限制

• 没有代码签名，也没有经过公证。deb 和 rpm 包还没在干净的 RHEL 9 和 Ubuntu 22.04 上安装测试过。

许可证：MIT。安装包在 resources/licenses/ 里附带第三方许可证。

What's new

• Three visualizations: the treemap, a flame graph and a polar flame graph. Switch at any time from the toolbar or with V, during a scan or after it. Each one remembers its own color mode, and a new "top-level branch" coloring gives every top-level folder its own hue.
• Faster scans: concurrent listings no longer wait for one shared thread. Hard scans are about 4× faster on Windows, and a full scan of a Mac went from 211 s to 32 s.
• Folders still being scanned glow: on the top levels of the view, until everything below them is read.
• macOS: first macOS build (Apple Silicon and Intel). It reads folders with getattrlistbulk, shows disk load from IOKit, never downloads cloud-only files, and offers Full Disk Access guidance. The system and data volumes are no longer counted twice, so the progress bar no longer stops at 99%.
• Portable builds for Windows and Linux.
• Update notices: from this version on, SpaceKnife checks this project's releases at most once a day and sends nothing about you or your files.
  • Small updates show a badge at the top right; bigger ones show a summary card or a dialog.
  • One click downloads the right file, checked against the published SHA-256.
  • Turn it off in Settings › General › Updates.
• The scan details show the whole disk's read rate and latency.

Fixes

• A scan no longer fails when a folder is deleted while it is being scanned.
• Starting an MFT quick scan no longer leaves the window on the start page until the scan ends, and a second click no longer starts the same scan again.
• The hover card stays up while the picture updates.
• Closing a big scan gives its memory back, and the backend no longer warns about memory that is only kept for the next scan.
• English plurals in the command line ("1 file"). Thanks @swastiktawate (#7).

Known limitations

• 0.3.0 has no update check, so this time upgrade by hand; later versions will tell you.
• Not code-signed and not notarized. The deb and rpm packages have not yet been installed on clean RHEL 9 or Ubuntu 22.04 machines.

• macOS：第一个 macOS 版（Apple Silicon 与 Intel）。用 getattrlistbulk 批量读取文件夹，从 IOKit 读取磁盘负载，不会触发云盘文件下载，并引导开启「完全磁盘访问权限」。系统卷和数据卷不再重复计算，进度条不再卡在 99%。
• 便携版：Windows 和 Linux。

修复

• 扫描过程中有文件夹被删除时，整次扫描不再失败。
• 开始 MFT 快速扫描后，窗口不会一直停在开始页直到扫描结束；再点一次也不会重复开始同一个扫描。
• 画面更新时，悬停卡不再消失。
• 关掉大扫描后归还内存；后端不再为留给下一次扫描复用的内存发出警告。
• 命令行里英文单复数正确（「1 file」）。感谢 @swastiktawate（#7）。

已知限制

• 0.3.0 没有更新检查，这次要手动升级；之后的版本会自动提示。
• 没有代码签名，也没有经过公证。deb 和 rpm 包还没在干净的 RHEL 9 和 Ubuntu 22.04 上安装测试过。

SpaceKnife 0.3.0 (pre-release)

The first public build of SpaceKnife, a modern cross-platform disk usage analyzer: a live nested treemap that shows what fills your drives. SpaceKnife is an independent project inspired by SpaceSniffer and is not affiliated with SpaceSniffer or its author.

This is a pre-release. The installers are not code-signed yet and have not been tested on clean Windows 10, RHEL 9 or Ubuntu 22.04 machines.

• Windows: install for the current user (no administrator rights needed) or for all users. The installer is unsigned, so SmartScreen warns about an unknown publisher on first run: choose "More info › Run anyway".
• Linux: deb and rpm install to /opt/SpaceKnife; the command is spaceknife. The AppImage needs FUSE 2 (libfuse2 on Ubuntu); without it, run it with --appimage-extract-and-run.
• Uninstalling keeps your snapshots and settings. A macOS build is not available yet.

Features

• Nested treemap: WebGL rendering, zoom animation, hover cards, detail levels, grouping of small items, free and unknown space; split view.
• Scanning: parallel full scan (native Rust extension); NTFS MFT quick scan on Windows (administrator rights, through a read-only helper); the scan can cap the disk load it causes and shows load and active time.
• Live monitoring: file-change hooks (Windows ReadDirectoryChangesExW with USN journal catch-up; Linux inotify, falling back to polling when watches run out); changed blocks flash.
• Filter language: compatible with SpaceSniffer-style filters, with extensions; tags, file classes and color modes.
• Snapshots and comparison: a snapshot is saved after each scan; compare any two, or a snapshot with now, showing only growth or only shrinkage.
• Management: context menu, delete basket (recycle bin by default, undoable), export templates (CSV / JSON / HTML and more), command palette, insight rules, command line (spaceknife-backend scan …).
• Languages: English and Simplified Chinese, following the system language, switchable at any time.

Known limitations

• Unsigned; no automatic updates.
• Tested on Windows 11 and on Ubuntu 22.04 (WSL) only. The Windows installer was verified on Windows 11 (silent install, smoke test, clean uninstall); the deb and rpm packages were inspected but not installed yet.
• A current-user install lives in a folder the user can write to, and the MFT quick scan starts its elevated helper from there. Choose the all-users install if that matters to you.

• Windows：可选「仅当前用户」（不需要管理员）或「所有用户」。安装包未签名，第一次运行时 SmartScreen 会提示「未知发布者」，点「更多信息 › 仍要运行」。
• Linux：deb / rpm 装到 /opt/SpaceKnife，命令是 spaceknife。AppImage 需要 FUSE 2（Ubuntu 上是 libfuse2），没有时加 --appimage-extract-and-run 运行。

• 嵌套树图：WebGL 渲染，缩放动画、悬停信息卡、细节层级、小项聚合、可用 / 未知空间；分屏多视图。
• 扫描：并行硬扫描（Rust 原生扩展）；Windows 上 NTFS MFT 快速扫描（需要管理员，通过只读的提权扫描助手）；扫描时可限制自身造成的磁盘负载，显示负载与「活动时间」。
• 实时监控：文件变化钩子（Windows ReadDirectoryChangesExW + USN 补偿；Linux inotify，监视额度不够时改为轮询对账），树图闪烁提示变化。
• 过滤语言：与 SpaceSniffer 的过滤写法兼容并做了扩展，标签、文件类别与配色。
• 快照与对比：扫描后自动保存快照，任意两次对比，或与「现在」对比，只看增长或缩减。
• 管理：右键菜单、删除篮（默认移到回收站，可撤销）、导出模板（CSV / JSON / HTML 等）、命令面板、洞察规则、命令行（spaceknife-backend scan …）。
• 界面语言：简体中文与英文，默认跟随系统，设置里即时切换。

已知限制

• 未签名；没有自动更新。
• 只在 Windows 11 和 WSL（Ubuntu 22.04）上测试过。Windows 安装包在 Windows 11 上验证过（静默安装、冒烟测试、卸载后不留残余）；deb / rpm 只检查了包内容，还没有实际安装过。
• 「仅当前用户」安装位于用户可写目录；MFT 快扫会从这里启动提权助手。介意的话请选「所有用户」安装。
