@a1batross a1batross released this 23 Aug 22:52

The first tagged release of FreeVGUI -- a free and open source reimplementation of Half-Life 1's VGUI1 toolkit (vgui.so/vgui.dll), written to be binary-compatible with the original.

Thirty years ago today, Team Fortress was released for Quake. I didn't knew it's TF's anniversary today but I guess today is a good day for FreeVGUI release, if we keep in mind that VGUI1 because of Team Fortress Classic. :)

Highlights

  • Complete VGUI1 widgets set implementation.
  • 100% ABI compatible with Linux vgui.so, checked with libabigail and vtable-dumper.
  • Licensed under BSD 3-clause, so it can be freely used by both Xash3D FWGS or pure GoldSrc mods.
  • Crossplatform already, tested to work on both amd64 and riscv64.

Xash3D FWGS support layer

  • platform/xash3d-fwgs/ is a full replacement for the engine's vgui_support shim, built as part of the library instead of as a separate module.
  • Ships as either dynamic DLL for GoldSrc compatible platforms (32-bit x86 Windows, Linux or Mac) or statically linked into the client.dll on other platforms to avoid C++ ABI between engine and game logic.

Known limitations

  • Only the POSIX platform layer exists so far, win32 support will come later.
  • Build mode is incomplete.
