What's new

• Export to CSV. The Export… button in the Folders, Largest files and Search tabs saves the list as a CSV file: the folders of the tree as far as they are expanded (with their depth and the numbers of files and folders inside), the listed largest files, or every match of a search, not only the 200 shown. The file opens in Excel as is: UTF-8 with a byte order mark, fields separated by the list separator of the Windows region settings. The Access errors window can save its list the same way.
• Export from the command line without opening the window: --export PATH writes the largest files (--largest N, --older-than Y) or the matches of a query (--search "*.iso;*.vhdx", --kind, --whole-word) as CSV, with --sort, --logical, --sep and --out. --help lists the options.
• The chart can be driven from the keyboard. Left and Right move along a ring, Down moves to the largest item inside the selected folder and Up to its parent. The selected sector is outlined and shows its tooltip until the mouse moves or Esc is pressed. Enter acts as a click, Backspace goes up and keeps the folder left selected, Delete moves the selected item to the Recycle Bin after a confirmation, and Ctrl+E opens it in Explorer. The context menu shows these shortcuts.
• Optional update check, off by default. It is enabled in the About window (at most once a day at start-up), where Check now asks at once. Only the version of the latest release is requested from the GitHub Releases API; nothing is downloaded or installed. When a newer release exists, a button with its version appears to the right of About and opens the release page.
• Fast scan is offered whenever the program runs without administrator rights, also at start-up before a drive is chosen, so the drive picked after the restart is read through the MFT at once. Its hint explains that network drives and other file systems are always walked folder by folder.
• Collapse all in the Folders tab folds the tree to the scanned folder; a click on a file in the centre of the chart expands the tree to it again.
• The Waste figure in the status bar explains itself on hover.
• The window keeps the width the toolbar needs, whatever the language and the set of buttons.
• The window title no longer carries the version; it is shown in the About window.

Fixes

• An empty horizontal scroll bar no longer appears under the tree at display scales such as 150% or after the panel is resized.
• A narrow left panel no longer shows a black band next to its lists.
• Network drives are no longer taken for NTFS drives when Fast scan is offered.

• Необязательная проверка обновлений, по умолчанию выключена. Включается в окне О программе (не чаще раза в сутки при запуске); там же кнопка Проверить сейчас проверяет сразу. У GitHub Releases API запрашивается только версия последнего выпуска; ничего не загружается и не устанавливается. Если вышла новая версия, справа от О программе появляется кнопка с её номером, открывающая страницу выпуска.
• Быстрый скан предлагается всегда, когда программа запущена без прав администратора, в том числе при запуске, до выбора диска, так что выбранный после перезапуска диск сразу читается через MFT. Подсказка кнопки поясняет, что сетевые диски и другие файловые системы всегда обходятся по папкам.
• Свернуть все во вкладке Папки сворачивает дерево до просканированной папки; щелчок по файлу в центре диаграммы снова раскрывает дерево до него.
• Значение Потери в строке состояния поясняется во всплывающей подсказке.
• Окно сохраняет ширину, нужную панели инструментов, при любом языке и наборе кнопок.

Исправления

• Пустая горизонтальная полоса прокрутки больше не появляется под деревом при масштабе экрана вроде 150% или после изменения ширины панели.

What's new

• Russian interface. The language follows that of Windows and can be chosen in the About window; sizes, numbers and dates follow the language.
• Dark theme with a chart palette of its own. The button with a sun, a moon or a half-filled circle next to About switches between the Windows setting, light and dark.
• Types tab: file types under the centre of the chart with the description Windows gives them, their share and total size. A click colours the files of a type on the chart, the arrow unfolds its 20 largest files, a double click lists all of them in Search. A new colour scheme, Colors: by type, gives the twelve largest types of the scan a colour each.
• Dates of the last change. The tooltip shows the date and the age (2024-03-15 (6 months ago)); a folder takes the newest date inside it. A new colour scheme, Colors: by age, runs from red for recent items to blue for ten years and older, with a legend. Largest files can be limited to files not changed for 1, 2, 5 or 10 years, and both lists can be ordered by date.
• Search is much more capable: several words must all match, ; or | join alternatives (*.mp4;*.mkv), quotes keep a phrase, * and ? make a mask for the whole name. Toggles in the field limit it to whole words and to files or folders. The total size of the matches is shown, the matching parts of names are highlighted, and the chart keeps the colour of the matches while fading everything else.
• Delete to the Recycle Bin from the context menu, after a confirmation; the chart, the tree and the lists are updated without a rescan. The context menu is now also available in the tree and in the lists, and has Copy path (Ctrl+C copies the path of the item under the mouse).
• Number of rings from 3 to 12, in the Rings list or with the + and - keys.
• Files are drawn with a gap to their folder, as in OverDisk, so they are told apart from directories at a glance.
• Shares in the tooltip: 12% of Users, 3.4% of C:.
• Path field that works like the address bar of Explorer: it shows the current path, becomes editable on a click and offers matching folders while a path is typed. A path that does not exist is reported, and the results on screen stay.
• More ways to choose what to scan: the drive list offers the eight most recent folders and Choose folder…; a folder or a drive can be dragged onto the window. Nothing is scanned at start-up unasked; a start screen shows what to do.
• Access errors window: the folders a scan could not read, with the reason, opened from a link in the status bar.
• Portable mode: a disk_flashlight.ron file next to the program makes it keep its settings there instead of in the user profile. The portable zip ships with such a file.
• A click on a file in the chart opens its folder; a button in the corner of the chart restores the view after zooming or panning.
• If the program stops because of an internal error, it says so in a message box and saves the details to crash.log next to the settings.

Fixes

• Fast scan (MFT): records split between two parts of a fragmented MFT are read correctly; on volumes with 512-byte clusters they could be lost. The folder count now grows during the scan.
• Directory walk: small files that NTFS keeps inside their MFT record no longer count as taking a cluster, so the size on disk agrees with the Fast scan. The size on disk of compressed and sparse files with paths longer than 260 characters is found.
• D: typed in the path field scans the drive's root, not the current folder on that drive.
• Sector colours no longer change while zooming and panning.
• A mapped network drive given on the command line no longer freezes the window at start-up when its server is away.
• No white flash when a maximized window starts; scroll bars no longer cover the sizes in the lists; long status messages no longer run over the counts in the status bar.
• Smaller things: "Scan cancelled" after Cancel, drive kinds in the drive list in the interface language, chart shortcuts ignored while the Access errors window is open.

• Поиск стал заметно мощнее: несколько слов должны совпасть все, ; или | объединяют варианты (*.mp4;*.mkv), кавычки сохраняют фразу, * и ? задают маску для всего имени. Переключатели в поле ограничивают поиск целыми словами и файлами или папками. Показывается общий размер совпадений, совпавшие части имён подсвечиваются, а диаграмма сохраняет цвет совпадений и приглушает остальное.
• Удаление в корзину из контекстного меню после подтверждения; диаграмма, дерево и списки обновляются без повторного сканирования. Контекстное меню теперь есть и в дереве, и в списках, и в нём появился пункт Копировать путь (Ctrl+C копирует путь элемента под курсором).

Исправления

What's new

• Search tab (Ctrl+F): files and folders of the whole scan whose names contain the typed text, ignoring case (Cyrillic included). The 200 largest matches are listed with the total count; a click on a folder makes it the centre of the chart, a click on a file moves into its folder.
• Largest files tab: the 100 largest files under the centre of the chart, with their folders. Hovering a row highlights the file on the chart.
• Free space of a drive is shown as a pale grey-blue sector in the first ring when the drive's root is in the centre.
• Settings are kept between runs: chart metric, colour scheme, Follow in tree, the tab of the left panel, window size and position, tree width, and the last scanned path, which is offered in the path field.
• Faster directory walk: directories are listed in 64 KiB batches, about 40% faster on a warm cache (C: with ~920 000 entries in about 1.3 seconds instead of 2).
• MFT scanning of folders: with administrator rights, folders on NTFS drives are scanned through the MFT too, not only whole drives; Fast scan and --mft work for folders as well.
• Rescan keeps your place: the current folder and the navigation history survive a rescan; if the folder is gone, its closest remaining parent is shown.
• The tree follows the chart: hovering a sector expands the tree to it (the Follow in tree option), and when the centre changes only the path to it stays expanded, so expanded folders no longer pile up.
• About window (F1 or the button at the right end of the toolbar) with the version and a link to the project page.
• Faster start-up with network drives: drives are queried in the background, so a disconnected network drive no longer delays the window.
• The portable zip now contains only the program.

What's new

• Colours by relative size, as in OverDisk: the largest item among its siblings is red and smaller ones shift towards yellow, with colours becoming paler towards the rim. The previous scheme remains available as Colors: by level.
• Small items are merged into one N smaller items sector per directory instead of being drawn as hairlines. Zooming in splits the group; a click on the group zooms in.
• Zoom and pan: the mouse wheel zooms towards the cursor (up to 200x), dragging with the middle button pans, and a middle-button double click restores the view. Only the visible part of the chart is laid out, so zooming stays fast.
• Smoother rendering with 4x multisampling.
• Context menu on right-click: Open in Explorer and Properties for the sector under the cursor, or for the current directory on the centre. A left click on the centre goes up.
• Fast scan button (with the UAC shield) replaces Admin; it appears only when elevation would speed up the scan, i.e. for the root of an NTFS drive.
• --mft option restarts the program as administrator and scans the drive through the MFT, for example disk_flashlight.exe --mft C:\.
• The version is shown in the window title and printed by --version.
• The release now provides a portable zip (program, licence and READMEs in a Disk Flashlight folder) alongside the installer.
