Note: TrueSurvival is a total conversion of Minecraft, which makes the game much more difficult to complete and an even harder challenge on hardcore! In this guide, I will NOT be playing on hardcore because I suck at this datapack 😔.

Before Starting

Before you load into the world, it is important to know that you are on a strict timer to make and light a campfire by nightfall, or else you will likely freeze. This assumption is made that you have spawned in a moderate temperature biome. However spawning in cooler or warmer biomes will alter the effects of freezing and overheating, and wearing armor will affect you differently depending on the biome temperature.
NOTE: Spawning in a cold biome will start you off with leather armor

How to Keep a Moderate Temperature

Biome Temperature Day Night
Moderate No armor, and no campfire is needed during the day. Being near a campfire while it is day while wearing leather armor will cause overheating At least one piece of leather armor or a campfire is needed to avoid freezing
Cold A full set of leather armor, or a campfire is needed to avoid freezing A campfire is needed to avoid freezing
Warm Any armor piece, or standing next to a campfire will cause you to overheat A campfire or any leather armor piece is needed to avoid freezing

Loading In

Upon loading into the world, immediately look for gravel, and get as much of it as possible. We are particularly searching for flint, and while we want to have as much flint as possible for tools, for now we need to rush to get a campfire made before nightfall. Grab around 20 pieces of gravel which should hopefully get you 5 flint in the process!

Near perfect amount of flint and gravel!

Breaking logs while holding flint will drop 0-2 sticks. Try to acquire 16-20 sticks by chopping down nearby trees with flint.

getting-sticks

After collecting your sticks, you will need to craft your first tool, the flint knife!

Gathering sticks at a nearby tree

The flint knife is able to do a multitude of things, such as strip stripped logs into sticks, and more importantly, gathering plant fiber! By walking up to grass, ferns, etc, and right clicking, you will be able to harvest plant fiber, which can be used as a string replacement early on. Gather plant fiber until your knife breaks!

Using your newly acquired plant fiber, craft a flint hatchet, and a flint mattock!

Start by chopping down more nearby trees to get stripped wood. This stripped wood can be turned into planks by placing the stripped log down, then right clicking to get a plank! You will need at least 2 planks to make a crafting table.

Using the mattock, gather up at least two cobblestone and at least one coal.

Using your planks and cobblestone, craft a crafting table!

Finally, find a place to make your base, I personally like to choose caves and blocking out the monsters with dirt, as building your own house out of wood and cobblestone is too difficult and costly of a task this early on.

First Night

As soon as you can, place your crafting table down in your new base, and craft a campfire.

As well, using two sticks, craft a firestarter!

firestarter-recipe

Firestarters will be your best friend when it comes to keeping warm at night. Firestarters are able to light campfires by holding right-click until the campfire is lit! Campfires last for five minutes before extinguishing, so be sure to get another fire going if it goes out!

To keep your campfire lit throughout the night, consider crafting bundles of sticks using four sticks, and throw them on top of the campfire to extend the life of the campfire flame.

Make sure to admire and appreciate your new base, and make sure to not stray too far from the campfire, or you will begin to freeze!

Just because you are safe and sound, doesn't mean you can stop working! To pass the long nights, mine as much cobblestone as you can, as stone tools are incredibly expensive to make. "Cook" your cobblestone on your campfire just as you would with food, and mine more cobblestone while you wait for it to cook.

Cooking cobblestone on the campfire

Eventually, you will want at least 4 campfires at once to cook cobblestone.

Alternatively while you wait for the cobblestone to cook, you can turn the extra gravel from earlier into some useful flint, as you are likely going to go through a ton of flint tools.

Once it reaches morning, you will likely need to solve your water issue. You will need to look for cows to find some leather (while looking for cows, grab some wool along the way!).

Gather two leather from the cows, as well as some plant string to craft a canteen. You can get rabbit hide by crafting one leather, and a flint.

Now using the canteen, right click on any water source block, and it will fill the canteen allowing you to drink from it!

Filling a canteen with water

Despite having a privative water source, drinking from a canteen will always give you the thirst effect, as the water is not purified. This issue cannot be solved until you can craft a furnace to get bottles.

For the rest of the day, gather food as well as lots of wood, particularly enough wood and sticks to craft at least 3 more campfires. It is also a good idea to get plant fiber to craft silk for a bed, which will allow you to skip the nights to avoid freezing. As a bonus, if you acquire enough leather, you will even be able to craft leather armor, allowing you to avoid freezing altogether!

Home sweet home

Now that it is nighttime again, start mining more cobblestone to craft a stone pickaxe.

To craft a stone pickaxe, you will need at least 24 cobblestone to craft a stone pickaxe. Start by turning your 24 hardened cobblestone into hardened cobblestone slabs.

hardened-stone-slab-recipe

Next, using two of your hardened cobblestone slabs, place them on top of each other to form a block of hardened stone.

hardened-stone

Finally, right click each hardened stone with a mattock, and it will drop one hardened stone! You only need to right click with the mattock when you make a hardened stone with hardened stone slabs, otherwise, you can just mine hardened stone after placing them down. Using your new hardened stone, craft a stone pickaxe with two hardened stone slabs, a hardened stone, two plant fibers or string, and two sticks.
