Releases: FraCata00/appmem

v0.2.1

Choose a tag to compare

@FraCata00 FraCata00 released this 25 Oct 15:51

Change the refresh interval while appmem is running: + (or =) refreshes faster, - slower, stepping through 0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10 seconds. A faster pace takes effect right away, and the header shows the current interval (↻ 2s). --interval still sets where it starts.

v0.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@FraCata00 FraCata00 released this 25 Oct 15:36

Per-app memory alerts: select an app, press t and type a limit in GB. Rows over their limit turn red (a leading ! with NO_COLOR or in --once). Alerts are saved in ~/.config/appmem/config.toml.

Also a codebase cleanup: the TUI and --once now share the same row formatting.

appmem 0.1.3

@FraCata00 FraCata00 released this 25 Oct 15:17

Fixes

  • On wide terminals the name column is capped at 40 columns, so totals stay next to the app names instead of drifting to the right edge.
  • Memory bars use thin line glyphs (━━━───), so bars on adjacent rows no longer merge into one block with some fonts.
  • The crates.io README now links to the latest prebuilt binary.

Install

cargo install appmem

Prebuilt binary (Apple Silicon)

curl -LO https://github.com/FraCata00/appmem/releases/latest/download/appmem-aarch64-apple-darwin.tar.gz
tar -xzf appmem-aarch64-apple-darwin.tar.gz
sudo mv appmem-aarch64-apple-darwin/appmem /usr/local/bin/

The binary is not notarized. Downloading it with curl, as above, avoids Gatekeeper's quarantine flag. If you download it with a browser instead, run xattr -d com.apple.quarantine appmem before the first launch.

appmem 0.1.2

Choose a tag to compare

@FraCata00 FraCata00 released this 25 Oct 15:09

Maintenance release: no code changes since 0.1.0.

Changes

  • Release builds are now also attached under a version-independent name, appmem-aarch64-apple-darwin.tar.gz, so the install command below always fetches the latest release.

Requires macOS 12 or later.

appmem 0.1.1

@FraCata00 FraCata00 released this 25 Oct 15:08

Documentation release: no code changes since 0.1.0.

Changes

  • The README now explains how to install the prebuilt Apple Silicon binary, how to verify its checksum, and how to handle Gatekeeper's quarantine flag.

appmem 0.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@FraCata00 FraCata00 released this 25 Oct 15:05

First release of appmem: see which macOS app is using your memory, grouped per app, in the terminal.

Features

  • Per-app totals. Every process is attributed to the app it belongs to, using the process macOS holds responsible for it, the app bundle in its path, and dedicated rules for the iOS Simulator and Apple's system processes.
  • Numbers that match Activity Monitor. Per-process memory is the physical footprint, the same value as Activity Monitor's Memory column. The header shows used and wired memory, memory pressure and swap.
  • Tree view. Apps are sorted by memory with System always last. Expand an app to see its heaviest processes.
  • Quit or terminate from the keyboard. k on an app sends a normal quit request (like Cmd-Q), so apps can still ask you to save. k on a process sends SIGTERM. Every action asks for confirmation.
  • Safety checks. System processes, other users' and root processes, and appmem with the shell and terminal running it can never be terminated. SIGKILL is never sent.
  • --once mode prints the table and exits. --interval changes the refresh rate.
  • Lightweight. About 4 MB of memory and no measurable CPU while idle.

Install

cargo install appmem

Requires macOS 12 or later.

Prebuilt binary (Apple Silicon)

curl -LO https://github.com/FraCata00/appmem/releases/download/v0.1.0/appmem-v0.1.0-aarch64-apple-darwin.tar.gz
tar -xzf appmem-v0.1.0-aarch64-apple-darwin.tar.gz
sudo mv appmem-v0.1.0-aarch64-apple-darwin/appmem /usr/local/bin/

The binary is not notarized. Downloading it with curl, as above, avoids Gatekeeper's quarantine flag. If you download it with a browser instead, run xattr -d com.apple.quarantine appmem before the first launch.

Known limitations

  • Chrome renderer processes can't be mapped to tab names from outside Chrome. Use Chrome's Task Manager (Shift+Esc) for that.
  • Process names longer than 32 bytes are truncated.
