Work plan

Last updated: 2026-10-05. This page lists what is being worked on now and the order of what comes next. It is updated as items are finished or the order changes; the issue tracker has the details of each item. There are no dates: this is a small effort, and the order is the estimated order of work, not a schedule.

8.x (stable-8, latest v8.18.6) receives bug fixes only. Everything below is 9.x work on main.

Now: 9.0.0-alpha.5

The next preview. Its contents are on main; before the release it is checked by hand on Debian 13 and with the teaching calculation set.

  • Image conversion without ImageMagick (#231).
  • File dialog: file-type filter, typed paths, layout.
  • Builder: File > New, Open..., Add Structure from File..., Close; Save As a calculation into any local folder.
  • CONFIG: site and user settings merged per key in the applications as in the job script; key: - clears a site value.
  • Register Machines as a tabbed editor (Machine, Connection, Job script, Queues) showing where each setting comes from.
  • Local shells follow the Terminal preference.
  • No X Toolkit in the job store; X11 only on Linux (#232).

Next, in order

# Item Estimate
1 Register Machines, remaining parts (#234): Codes tab (program, environment such as g16root, command line), queue defaults, a "Machine settings..." button in the Launcher and Machine Browser, site settings of a central server edited from a client over ssh; a help page for the window ~3 days
2 A session identifier in place of $DISPLAY (#233): independent sessions on one display, ssh -X reconnects, groundwork for native clients ~4 days
3 Jobs followed by the ECCE server (#208), first version: either the server submits and follows jobs on machines it reaches directly, or a client that waits for the next login instead of reporting a failure; the choice depends on the open question in the issue 2-6 days
4 Vibrational spectrum viewer (#214): wavenumber axis high to low, IR and Raman in separate panes, zoom along the wavenumber axis 3-4 days

Alongside, when there is room

  • Native macOS client (#133): the macOS CI build is fixed one obstacle at a time. Once native macOS and Windows builds work, local data mode becomes the default.
  • User help (#219): the "Getting started" chapter, checked against the program.
  • Bond visibility (#227).
  • Removing the vendored SGI Open Inventor now that Coin3D is the default (#166).

Under consideration

  • Jobs followed by the ECCE server for any machine, including centres with two-factor authentication (#208, options B-E).
  • A queue editor that discovers a cluster's queues, with a job-script preview and a dry run (#212).
  • A standalone MO diagram tool.
