Rift 1.9.10

Changed

  • Rift updates itself from our own servers now. Updates used to come from this GitHub
page. From now on they come straight from Rift, and every update is signed and checked
before it installs, so the app refuses anything that did not come from us.
  • This is the last update that comes from GitHub. There is nothing for you to do. Once
you are on 1.9.10, every update after this one arrives on its own. This page stays up for
anyone who has not opened Rift in a while.

New

  • Try new features early. In Settings, under Desktop & Updates, you can join beta to get
new builds before everyone else and help test them. Turn it off and you go back to the
normal version. Same account, same servers and same friends either way.

Fixed

  • The overlay now tells you when a game will not let it show. Some games run in a mode
that nothing can draw over, and the overlay was simply not appearing with no explanation.
Rift now says so once per game, and tells you to switch that game to Borderless.
  • When an update cannot be installed, Rift says why instead of failing quietly.

Rift 1.9.9

Performance

  • Hardware acceleration is back on. Rift had been compositing the entire
interface on the CPU - scrolling, animation, video, all of it - because the UI
toolkit shipped with GPU compositing switched off by default. It is now enabled
properly: the interface composites on the GPU, WebGL runs on hardware, and video
decodes and encodes on hardware instead of the processor. The app feels smoother
and leaves far more CPU for whatever else you are doing.
  • Lower idle CPU and one less background process. Chromium was keeping a spare
renderer process permanently warm to speed up page navigations that Rift, being a
single page, never makes. That is roughly 50 MB handed back, and Rift now sits at
a fraction of a percent of CPU when you are not touching it.

New

  • Automatic crash reporting. Rift now ships a small companion process,
Rift_Crashpad.exe, that runs alongside the app. If Rift crashes it survives the
crash, captures what happened and sends the report in. Previously a crash left
nothing behind at all, so problems that only happened on your machine were
    invisible to us.

Fixed

  • Closing the window no longer quits Rift. The close button was supposed to
minimise to the tray, but it was killing the app instead - so voice calls dropped
and notifications stopped. It now goes to the tray and keeps running, as intended.

Changed

  • The in-game overlay is now opt-in and needs a restart. Keeping it permanently
available forced the off-screen rendering mode that was costing the whole app its
hardware acceleration. It is off unless you turn it on, and switching it on takes
    effect after a restart.

Known issues

  • With the in-game overlay enabled, hardware acceleration is reduced for that
session - that rendering mode and GPU compositing cannot both be active. Leave the
overlay off for the fastest experience.
  • The experimental see-through window is still unavailable and its toggle does
nothing. The current rendering mode cannot do per-pixel transparency.

Rift 1.9.8

Performance

  • Hardware-accelerated screen sharing. Your screen share now encodes with H.264, which cuts CPU usage while streaming.
  • Rift stops working while you're gaming. When the window wasn't focused it kept drawing in the background anyway, burning CPU the whole time you were in another app. It now properly idles.

New

  • MP4 video and AAC audio play properly. Clips and attachments that used to play silently, or not at all, now have sound. MP3 works too.
  • Resource monitor (Ctrl+Shift+O). A live per-process breakdown of what Rift is using, so you can see exactly where memory or CPU is going.

Fixed

  • Desktop notifications now actually appear. The popup outside the app was failing every time it tried to show, so notifications only ever appeared inside Rift.
  • Ctrl+Shift+I no longer opens developer tools on top of developer tools.

Known issues

  • The experimental see-through window is unavailable in this build and its toggle in Settings does nothing. The new rendering mode can't do per-pixel transparency. It'll return if a fallback is added.

1.9.7

@Gav2011 Gav2011 released this 12 Sep 01:26

Rift 1.9.7

A performance-focused release.

Performance

  • Dramatically lower GPU and CPU usage. Rift now throttles its render rate when the window isn't focused or minimized and freezes idle animations, so background graphics use drops to near-zero (roughly 0.2% GPU idle, and about 2% during a call on a laptop GPU). Cooler, quieter, and much easier on battery.
  • Starts with no internet. Launch Rift offline and you get a clean local "No internet" screen (logo + a rotating "Did you know?" tip) that keeps pinging and loads straight into the app the moment you're back online - instead of a blank window or a browser error page.

Improved

  • Screen-share controls. Toggle your stream's audio on and off live without restarting the share, and pick your resolution and frame rate (up to 60 FPS).
  • Server Stats location now has an IP-geolocation fallback so it still resolves when precise location isn't available.

Fixed

  • Voice call join loop. A friend on a slightly older build could get stuck joining and leaving a call over and over (which also caused reconnects for everyone else). Clients now update once and join, instead of bouncing.
  • Two Rift icons in the system tray after an in-app update - the old icon no longer lingers.
  • Light mode: the voice call area and game-activity backgrounds render correctly now (no more black panel).
  • Fixed a blank call view when spotlighting an activity, then another user, then the activity again.
  • Mute / deafen no longer flash the whole call view.
  • Custom-background videos no longer spin up extra background processing.
  • Your @username is now hidden in the profile popout and settings while streaming (it's what people use to friend you).

Mobile

  • Completely redesigned mobile UI (iOS / Android / mobile web): a real bottom tab bar - Home (DMs + Friends), Servers, Notifications, Profile - with mobile-native screens, instead of the desktop layout crammed onto a phone. Settings, server discovery, and channels are all built for touch now.

@Gav2011 Gav2011 released this 03 Sep 21:11

Rift 1.9.6

New

  • Streamer Mode (Settings → Gaming). Automatically hides your private info the moment screen capture is detected - DMs, email, IPs, server invite links, webhook URLs, Heart-Rate/widget links, signed-in devices, and your Server Stats location (the map that shows your city). It's armed by default, reveals again when you stop capturing, and you can hover anything to peek. There's a Preview button to see exactly what viewers won't.
  • Custom crosshair overlay (Settings → Gaming → Crosshair). A full builder with tabs (Lines / Center Dot / Outline / Layer): remove individual lines, pick a dot style (circle, square, diamond, hollow) with adjustable ring thickness, set each color/opacity, scale and rotate, choose your monitor and exact X/Y. It draws over borderless-fullscreen games.
  • Ticket tags. Tag support tickets like forum posts - members set their own tags, staff set staff-only tags with custom colors, and you can sort tickets by tag.
  • Double-click a message to reply. On by default (toggle in Settings → Accessibility).
  • "You're viewing older messages" bar with a Jump to Present button when you've scrolled up.
  • Voice connection stats. Click "Connected" in the call bar for live ping, bitrate, packet loss and per-stream info.
  • Restart option in the system-tray menu.

Improved

  • The app renders noticeably sharper - crisp, pixel-exact UI. (The optional see-through window stays a little softer and now says so.)
  • Redesigned server bar (new UI): servers show their name with live online / offline counts and cleaner icon-only Official/Verified/Trusted badges, with smooth mouse-wheel scrolling.
  • Voice chat can pop out to the side like the DMs/notifications panels, or stay docked in the call - your choice.
  • Redesigned popups - flat, clean separator borders instead of heavy shadows.
  • Badges and online counts now load instantly on startup instead of lagging in.
  • The members list clears when you're in DMs, and the reply bar now matches the message box.

Fixed

  • Screen sharing works again - both your own preview and what viewers see.
  • Your status (Idle / Do Not Disturb / Invisible) now updates everywhere the moment you change it.
  • The server settings menu opens in the right spot on the new UI.
  • Opening Settings now loads the page you were last on.
  • The "start on startup" toggle works, and external links open in your default browser.

Security

  • Streamer Mode keeps your IPs, email, DMs, invite links, webhook URLs and location out of your streams and recordings.

1.9.5

@Gav2011 Gav2011 released this 12 Jul 01:58
281374c

Rift 1.9.5

New

  • Rift links now open in the app. Clicking a rift:// link (invites, DMs, channels, servers) opens it directly in Rift instead of dead-ending in your browser. Works whether Rift is already running or closed. Check more here

Fixed

  • Snipping Tool, Paint, Notepad, Calculator, Terminal and similar apps no longer get mistaken for games.
  • Microsoft Store games now show their real name instead of a jumbled package ID.
  • The game overlay no longer appears when the game isn't actually the focused window.

Security

  • Patched a vulnerability that could have allowed another program on your device to access your Rift session.
  • Rift now loads only trusted Rift pages, protecting your camera, microphone, and account.

1.9.4

@Gav2011 Gav2011 released this 02 Jul 16:50

Rift 1.9.4

New

  • Taskbar call controls. While you're in a voice call, you can mute, deafen, toggle your camera, or disconnect directly from the Windows taskbar thumbnail without bringing Rift to the foreground.

Fixed

  • Resolved a memory leak during long voice calls and screen shares. Rift now periodically releases cached browser memory and enters a low-memory state when minimized to the system tray, preventing memory usage from continuously growing over time.
  • The app now stays on the Rift dashboard. External links now open in your default browser or a new tab instead of navigating the Rift window away from Rift.
