ROM folder names

Odyssey Launcher finds each system's games in a folder named after the system. This page lists the folder name for every built-in system.

The names are the same ones ES-DE and RetroBat use, so a collection you already have for either works without moving any files.

How the launcher finds a system's games

  1. Every system looks in {rom_root}/<folder name>. The ROM root (rom_root under [paths] in settings.toml) is the ROMs folder in your home folder by default, so Mega Drive games go in C:\Users\<you>\ROMs\megadrive. You can change the ROM root in the settings.
  2. If that folder doesn't exist, the launcher tries the system's alternative names (the third column below), in the order listed, and uses the first folder that exists.
  3. A system with rom_dirs (in your systems.toml, or set in Settings, ROM folders) uses those folders instead and ignores the default names. They can be anywhere, including a network share, and there can be several.

Use lower-case folder names. Windows doesn't tell the cases apart, but Linux does.

A game can sit directly in the system's folder or in a subfolder of it. Only files with the system's file types are listed, and .m3u, .cue and .gdi files group a multi-disc or multi-track game into one entry. On PlayStation 3, 4 and 5 a game is a folder, named with the system's file type (Bloodborne.ps4, Astro's Playroom.ps5): the launcher lists it as one game and hands the emulator the folder. Each system's file types are in systems.toml.

Systems with no games are hidden from the systems grid, unless you set hide_empty_systems = false under [display] in settings.toml.

Windows, Steam and Desktop Apps

These three hold shortcuts rather than ROMs: .lnk, .url, .bat and .cmd files (not .exe, so a game's own folder doesn't list its uninstaller and tools).

  • windows: shortcuts to Windows games and programs.
  • steam: the .url files Steam makes (Manage, Add desktop shortcut). They are handed to Steam, and the launcher follows the game until it ends.
  • desktop: shortcuts to programs that aren't games.

Favourites, Recently played and All games

These three have no folder. The launcher makes them from your favourites, your play history and every game it found.

Using a different folder

To keep a system's games somewhere else, add it to your systems.toml (in the launcher's config folder):

[systems.megadrive]
rom_dirs = ["E:/Sega/Mega Drive", "F:/More Mega Drive"]

Use forward slashes in Windows paths, or single quotes. Settings, ROM folders does the same with a folder picker.

The names on this page come from systems.toml in the launcher's source. If a system is missing or a name differs from ES-DE's, please open an issue.
