Contest & Academic Context

QuakeGuard was engineered not merely as a software exercise, but as a robust submission for prominent academic and industry-sponsored technology initiatives, with the ultimate goal of contributing to peer-reviewed scientific literature.

Hackersgen by Sorint.lab

Hackersgen is a comprehensive educational and professional growth platform in the IT world, sponsored by the global IT company Sorint.lab. It aims to bridge the gap between high school/university students and the enterprise technology landscape. Through this platform, QuakeGuard was developed to address the core challenges of designing a highly available, cloud-native architecture capable of withstanding extreme stress and security threats.

  • Focus Areas: Microservices, DevOps (Docker, CI/CD), Data Engineering, and API Security.

Fondazione GF Marilli Award

Operating within the broader Hackersgen initiative, this prestigious award is now managed by its own dedicated entity: the Fondazione GF Marilli, established in honor of Gianfranco Marilli. The foundation champions innovative hardware and software integration with a strong emphasis on real-world social impact. QuakeGuard was submitted as a life-saving, low-cost distributed infrastructure for Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) in alignment with the foundation's values.

  • Focus Areas: IoT Hardware design (ESP32-C3, ADXL345), Digital Signal Processing (DSP), and real-time mobile alerting systems.

Academic Publication Goal

A primary objective of the QuakeGuard project is to formalize its system architecture, DSP algorithms, and performance metrics into a peer-reviewed academic paper. The current Typst whitepaper and the rigorous end-to-end stress testing data (specifically demonstrating the mitigation of the "Thundering Herd" effect) serve as the foundational research. The future publication aims to demonstrate how commodity IoT hardware paired with a Zero-Trust cloud architecture can reliably and affordably democratize Earthquake Early Warning systems.

Educational Value

The development of QuakeGuard served as a comprehensive, full-stack educational journey covering:

  • Embedded Systems: Real-time operating systems (FreeRTOS), memory management, and I2C protocols.
  • Cryptography: Practical implementation of public-key infrastructure (PKI) on resource-constrained devices.
  • Distributed Systems: Asynchronous message brokers (Redis, MQTT) and spatial databases (PostGIS).
  • Modern Frontend: React Native, WebSockets, and complex state management (Zustand/React Query).
  • On-Premise AI: Local LLM inference (Ollama) for privacy-preserving report generation (v1.2.0).
