FroxComposband 7.2.5 beta

Character sheet

  • Added full character-sheet snapshot compare inside the C screen, with a light default cc / CC flow, extra snapshot slots, heading-aware scroll anchoring, and in-sheet compare/save notices instead of message-log spam.
  • Added C-sheet access from one-time grant menus and in-game stat-point choice prompts.

Items and lists

  • Made disintegration rods immune to disintegration effects.
  • Improved item-list flow with better tab cycling, a new Ctrl+P power-info toggle across object and shop lists, and clearer activation-picker colors.

UI information

  • Extended device-info panels to now show fractional charges in full capacity.
  • Removed a redundant (Foe) suffix from initial Duellist challenge messages.
  • Prevented health-bar redraws from overwriting the sidebar speed display.
  • Improved the new notes feature so stores and service buildings now share the same venue-note flow, venue notes print before entering buildings, note output reaches the messages pane immediately, and save-wide notes no longer reprint on town and world-map transition context updates.

Input

  • Backspace now works correctly in gcu entry fields that send raw 255 input.

Protected mode

  • Protected-session lock conflicts now show correct PID, owner, time, and command details, wrap long command lines, and allow termination directly from the details screen.

FroxComposband 7.2.3 beta

What's New?

Core fixes, state handling and anti-exploits

  • Added protected session mode (-p) to stop accidental duplicate-process play on the same character, with live save-session locks, conflict details, and safer stale temporary-dungeon-file handling.
  • Closed a whole set of farming and scumming loopholes, including Psion summon farming, retaliation leech overflow, stair scumming with live guardians, Android special-store scumming, overleveled Purple Disciple spell offers, and jumping through glass walls.
  • Fixed several nasty state and gameplay edge cases, including arena death recovery, Nightmare midnight curses breaking Monster Gambling, immediate stair-bounce monster refreshes, and a range of stale UI-state or prompt-state mismatches.

UI refreshes and list behavior

  • Object and monster lists, subwindows, and related panels now refresh correctly after detections, teleports, clairvoyance, chest opening, chameleon form changes, status changes, and similar state changes.
  • UI-only actions and special targeting no longer disturb monster visibility, range indicators, list stability, or current monster-recall focus.
  • Monster-list sorting and display options were significantly improved, including LOS sectioning, awake-first ordering, range display modes, and level-vs-distance sorting.

UI flow and interaction

  • Improved many interaction flows, including quantity shortcuts, Resting turn counts, Floor-tab access, special bags, Igor Wanted turn-ins, target/look recall actions, Shift+letter race jumps, item-damage alerts, search wraparound, item recall in knowledge browsers, look-under mode, and targeting/confirmation cleanup.
  • Added persistent dungeon notes with a } notes menu for save-wide, dungeon, floor, and building reminders.

UI information display

  • Expanded visible information across prompts, lists, and the character sheet, including sleeping status on the target line, Crossbowmaster close-range bonus, Wanted/Hunter shortcuts, full activation names, casting-stat indicators, floor ammo in shooter info, accurate sell prices, XP rate, Quick Walk mana suppression, and clearer stack/toggle presentation.

Macro and keymap overhaul

  • Replaced the old @ screen with a clearer Custom Keys interface.
  • Added selective loading and saving, replace/add modes, browsable change review, editing, reverting, and reset-to-defaults.

Pets

  • Significantly upgraded pet control with better listings, a sidebar indicator, and improved prompts around pet loss or map transitions.
  • Simplified map-transition following to a straight 4-range rule, added smarter pet shoving for failed swaps and tunneling, and now shows more-relevant damage values when examining pets.

Races and forms

  • Androids now keep unlocked racial attack powers, Hounds can choose their final evolution, Mana Hounds gained stronger defenses, and late-game Jellies can swap between Acidic Cytoplasm and Shoggoth without losing gained slots.

Items and inventory

  • Item lists are now more readable, with compact markers for cursed items, artifacts, randarts and similar states, plus automatic Possessor corpse levels.
  • Inventory and inscription handling got several practical upgrades, including universal @* labels, blank-inscription removal, safer Scrolls of Inventory Protection, downgraded curses on blasted items, and Adamantite Plate Mail no longer being treated like disposable common armor.
  • Ammo and thrown-item handling were improved too: Spears now truly throw, ammo piles generate and combine more sensibly, picked-up ammo can route into the quiver when pack is full, thrown potions shatter on clean landing, and ordinary ammo no longer bloats object statistics and counts.

Spells, detection and combat messaging

  • Inventory Resistance now more clearly distinguishes itself from the scroll effect, protects against theft, and makes inventory destruction easier to resist.
  • Genocide now properly accepts ?, and sleep, slow, genocide, and annihilation wording now better explains resistance and unique immunity.
  • Detect-all messaging is now shorter and clearer, correctly distinguishes moving treasure from animate objects, and stays aligned with Bard detection staging.
  • Monster-triggered Time Stop now has clearer death/resume messaging as a player-visible combat-effect improvement.

Options and defaults

  • Added and refined many interface and gameplay settings, including map centering after stairs/teleports and at configurable edges, message-pane wrap width, run-step prompting, melee attack confirmations, activation auto-retries, and clearer percentage-bar handling.
  • Updated defaults and startup behavior, including no_selling by default for new characters, refreshed starter presets, birth-option reset support, and cleaner handling of leftover temporary dungeon files.

Arena (now the Gladiator Ring)

  • Victorious players are now fully refreshed in the Winner's Lounge, including Monster-Ring auto-return cases, and the arena screen now shows the next challenger and lets the poster recall that monster.
  • Renamed the Thalos/Lite-Town Arena to the Gladiator Ring and the monster battle venue to the Monster Pit, so we do not have four different things named Arena.

And for the nerdier side of things...

Build and release

  • Packaged release builds are now provided for Linux (.deb and standalone binary), macOS (both main archs), and Windows.
  • Renamed the visible variant, startup and packaging identity to FroxComposband, and added an offer on first run to import older Frog saves and preference files, as well as an on-demand option on the welcome screen.

Codebase cleanup

  • Cleaned up the codebase by first normalizing line endings (this made all my diffs so much less noisy after that! Holy crap! xD).
  • Then spent many, many hours updating and normalizing intentional fallthrough guards, hardening prompt and display buffers, and clearing a large backlog of compiler warnings.

Release packaging and layout

  • Added reusable release scripts to generate help files and package Linux tarballs, Debian packages, Windows zip builds, and macOS DMGs.
  • Modernized macOS packaging for current toolchains and release naming, including generated help bundling, architecture-specific DMGs, and direct compressed image creation instead of the older intermediate HFS+ image path.
  • Added Debian launcher integration with desktop-entry metadata and high-resolution Linux icon assets.
  • Switched Debian/runtime layout handling to explicit package paths and private user-data behavior, while preserving import discovery from older Frog locations where relevant.
  • Removed tracked spoiler-generated help artifacts and other local generated/binary outputs from the shipped source tree.

Portability and startup reliability

  • Added portability fixes needed by release-build code paths across Linux, macOS, and Windows.
  • Softened help-file regeneration failure so startup can continue instead of treating unwritable/generated external help as a hard launch blocker.
  • Fixed Windows release startup handling by ensuring the main Windows term is active before core startup messaging.
  • Fixed 64-bit Windows window callback state handling by storing per-window term data at pointer width.
  • Corrected Windows package-test startup flow so smoke-test arguments are not misread as savefile paths.

Automated builds and smoke testing

  • Added a GitHub Actions workflow for tag-driven or manual cross-platform release builds on Linux, Windows, and macOS.
  • Generate shared help artifacts once on Linux, then reuse them across all package jobs to keep release outputs aligned.
  • Added package smoke-test modes and workflow harnesses that verify package paths, writable runtime directories, key data files, and frontend startup behavior.
  • Added targeted manual workflow options for platform-specific release iteration.
  • Publish beta tags as normal GitHub releases so the current download is surfaced on the repository front page.
