Battery limit (Charging optimizazion) not working anymore

Hi, GrapheneOS devs! Thanks for your wonderful work on this very welcomed ROM!

The problem

Since some release, I think since three or four, the Limit to 80% option, under Settings>Battery>Charging optimization, doesn't work anymore, making the battery charging itself beyond that level even when enabled.
I know that, as it says in the info below the toggle, the phone will charge to 100% once every one to two weeks [...], but that has already happened, and my Pixel continues to charging above the 80% limit anyway.

What I've tried

I've tried to do the following:

1. wait some charging cycle, to see if was just the 100% target once every 1-2 weeks being triggered
2. toggle on/off the option
3. reboot the phone several times

Same here, with some more data:

1. The first time it charged to 100% was Monday-Tuesday night (i.e. 9/10 Sep). It definitely sat long enough, since it takes around half the time to charge.
2. Next charging was Wednesday-Thursday night (11/12 Sep). Again, it charged 100% and stayed on charger quite long afterwards.
3. Today I've charged it for the third time. This time it was during the day, so I watched it. I took the phone when it was charged 90% already, and the lock screen was saying "charging complete". Nevertheless, it kept charging and I've disconnected it when it reached 91%.

This is Pixel 8a on Android 16, build 2025091000, but the Mon/Tue stable version was already affected.

I have the same problem during the last few days. I have used the 80% limit since day 1 of my grapheneos install.

I charged my phone overnight on 13 Sep 2025 just before going to bed (at this time, the limit worked, so it was 80% just before i went to bed),
Woke up on 14 Sep 2025 and saw my phone at 100%. I re-plugged my phone charger, and I notice the battery icon is not shielded (just the regular charging icon), it was only a while later that the icon came back.

For me waiting for some charging cycles didn't work. And I never experienced returning to the working 80% limitation, cause since it started my phone always charged beyond that, going to 100% every time. I off course tried to charging the phone overnight, but that didn't help too.

Please, fix this, it seems a clear bug, especially looking at the intended behavior explained by

Got the same issue today 2025-09-15 again as well.
The shield icon disappeared and i am now charging at 84%, despite i didn't touch any battery settings.
I know that it's supposed to do that every few weeks, but as i mentioned above this already happened literally yesterday (and 2 days ago as well)
I think this is a clear bug.

This is not related to the charger used, as I am using the same charger for the past year and the 80% limit worked all the time (until the latest update).
My charger is simply the provided Apple charger (that i got long long time ago) with an off-the-shelf USB-C cable.

This almost certainly seems like an upstream bug; there are tons of stock Pixel users complaining about this exact same issue: either the limit being totally disregarded or resetting at every reboot.

Hi @thestinger I am also experiencing this issue. Could you paste the charging control from lineageos? If we can have both, then users can choose if they want automatic recalibration or not, and the lineageos one also has a customizable % (70-100). Also if one breaks we will have another one to fallback on.

The suggested fix here doesn't seem to apply to GOS, as "Device health services" app is nowhere to be found. 🤔 It can be installed from APKmirror but I doubt that would fix the issue.

@horniecommie No need to ping me, and we're not switching from the standard code to LineageOS code. LineageOS code is generally not up to our expectations.
