Nativune 0.1.24

Nativune is an unofficial, native Windows desktop app for YouTube Music. It shows the official YouTube Music website in its own window and adds native controls such as a Compact mini player, tray and taskbar buttons. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Google or YouTube, and it does not download media or use a private playback API. It blocks ads only if you turn that on yourself (off by default).

Unsigned build. The installer is not yet Authenticode-signed, so Windows may show Unknown Publisher or a Microsoft Defender SmartScreen warning. Download only from this page and check the SHA-256 before running it.

What's new

  • Quick updates. Starting with the next release, updating downloads only the files that changed, usually a few MB, instead of the full 182 MB installer. Nativune reads just those parts of the release's Nativune-Setup.zip. It checks every file against the SHA-256 in the release's file list, which is itself checked against the digest GitHub publishes. The installed copy of Setup then applies the files, with the same rollback as a full update. Installed files that have been damaged are downloaded again. If a quick update fails before Setup starts, Nativune asks whether to download the full installer and shows its size; cancelling never starts the full download.
  • This update itself is a full update. Your installed Setup doesn't have the new quick-update mode yet, so this one release still downloads the full installer. Updates after it can be quick.

What's fixed

  • Setup keeps its backup if a failed update can't be fully undone. Before, Setup deleted its backup of the previous files even when the rollback didn't finish. It now keeps the backup and names the folder in the error message.

Install

  1. Download Nativune-Setup.exe and SHA256SUMS.txt from this release.
  2. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash .\Nativune-Setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256 and compare it with SHA256SUMS.txt. Expected: ac0b1ad0816bb31703727dbd7ebe031f05c187905a9f6fddfea123255d525854.
  3. Run Setup. It checks for the Microsoft .NET 10 Runtime, Windows App SDK, VC++ runtime and WebView2, and asks before installing any that are missing. Default location: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Nativune. Upgrades keep your profile and settings.

If you already have Nativune 0.1.10 or later, the update button at the top right of the toolbar offers this version.

This release has a fifth file, delta-update.json. The app uses it for quick updates; you don't need to download it.

Build and known limits

Built by CI run 36220566387 from commit 2422eb0; the files here are that run's output, checked again after download. Windows x64 only. Setup now has its own version (1.0.0), separate from the app's.

Before release, these passed:

  • the app self-check, including the new download checks, and native-fixture;
  • the installer checks, including the real download check of Microsoft's four installers;
  • the quick-update installer tests: an update, tampered, missing and extra files, a wrong file-list hash, repairing a damaged file, removing an old file, and usage errors;
  • the release build's check that test-only and benchmark code is removed;
  • the Compact, player-control, icon, launcher and Windows-function checks.

Tests on a throwaway install, using a local test server:

  • Update: the app offered "quick update about 2.6 MB; full Setup is 182 MB", downloaded 2 files, installed them and reopened on the new version.
  • Damaged download: it stopped and offered the full installer.

Not yet checked:

  • a quick update served by GitHub itself (it will first happen with the next release);
  • a crash or power loss while an update is being applied, which can still leave a mix of old and new files, as with a full update;
  • signed-in use;
  • Narrator and High Contrast.
