@Hantu-Raya Hantu-Raya released this 28 Sep 16:40

Nativune 0.1.33 (hotfix)

Nativune is an unofficial, native Windows desktop app for YouTube Music. It shows the official YouTube Music website in its own window and adds native controls such as a Compact mini player, tray and taskbar buttons. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Google or YouTube, and it does not download media or use a private playback API. It blocks ads only if you turn that on yourself (off by default).

Unsigned build. The installer is not yet Authenticode-signed, so Windows may show Unknown Publisher or a Microsoft Defender SmartScreen warning. Download only from this page and check the SHA-256 before running it.

Fixed

  • Setup no longer stops when WebView2 is out of date. On PCs with an older Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime (fresh Windows 11 installs ship 122), Setup used to stop with "A required Microsoft component is missing or out of date". Setup now lists WebView2 with the other prerequisites and, once you approve, updates it to the latest version. Windows asks for administrator permission for this step, because only an administrator run of Microsoft's WebView2 installer can replace the copy that ships with Windows (Microsoft's explanation).

The app itself is unchanged from 0.1.32.

Updating

Setup changed (version 1.0.3), so updating from 0.1.32 downloads the full Setup rather than a quick update.

Install

  1. Download Nativune-Setup.exe and SHA256SUMS.txt from this release.
  2. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash .\Nativune-Setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256 and compare it with SHA256SUMS.txt. Expected: 4dbe4744447c7fbdd902b41a30f258fa18e1a4a8218a07edab562a5a23e05622.
  3. Run Setup. It checks for the Microsoft .NET 10 Runtime, Windows App SDK, VC++ runtime and WebView2, and asks before installing any that are missing or out of date. Default location: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Nativune. Upgrades keep your profile and settings.

If you already have Nativune 0.1.10 or later, the update button in the toolbar offers this version.

Build and known limits

Built by CI run 36452110215 from commit 550d189. The files here are that run's output, checked again after download. Windows x64 only. Setup version 1.0.3.

Nativune 0.1.32

What's new

  • Time-synced lyrics in the Lyrics tab. YouTube Music's Lyrics tab now shows lyrics that follow the song, highlighting each line as it is sung. This comes from Barebones Better Lyrics 2.4.1.2, a cut-down fork of Better Lyrics kept at Hantu-Raya/barebones-better-lyrics. It changes only the contents of the Lyrics tab, not the rest of YouTube Music. Open lyric settings… in Settings › Lyrics sets a timing offset and optional translation (off by default). The fork is GPL-3.0; its source is published beside this release as barebones-better-lyrics-2.4.1.2-source.zip. Nativune itself stays MIT.
    • Lyrics is on by default, including when you update from 0.1.31 or earlier. If you never saved a Lyrics setting, it is on. If you saved Off, it stays off.
    • Privacy: while Lyrics is on, Nativune sends the playing song's title, artist, album and length to api.betterlyrics.org and, if that has no lyrics, to lrclib.net. Both services see your IP address. Lyric lines are sent to Google Translate only if you turn translation on.
    • To turn it off: untick Settings › Lyrics. It takes effect immediately; Nativune reloads the Music page so no lyric requests continue.
  • Donate on Ko-fi. A new Donate on Ko-fi entry in the More menu, a button in Settings › About and a heart button at the top left of Compact open ko-fi.com/hanturaya in your browser.
  • Compact: Keep-on-top pin. A pin button at the top left of Compact keeps the window on top of others. It does the same as More › Keep window on top. In Standard and Wide layouts the pin and heart appear only when there is room for the title.
  • App volume changes while you drag. The app volume slider (full window and Compact) now changes the volume as you drag, not only when you let go. If the slider closes during a drag (for example when you switch to Compact), the volume goes back to where the drag started.
  • Narrow windows. When the full window is too narrow, toolbar buttons move into More (Forward first, then Update, Discord, Timer, Volume and Home) instead of overlapping the minimize, maximize and close buttons. The full window can no longer be made narrower than the buttons that stay.

Quick update

Setup is unchanged (version 1.0.2), so updating from 0.1.31 is a quick update: only the changed app files are downloaded.

Install

  1. Download Nativune-Setup.exe and SHA256SUMS.txt from this release.
  2. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash .\Nativune-Setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256 and compare it with SHA256SUMS.txt. Expected: 657479bd8f2fb3f278e9135619f8190aeafc6afd2262fe5562ef8ca162d8feed.
  3. Run Setup. It checks for the Microsoft .NET 10 Runtime, Windows App SDK, VC++ runtime and WebView2, and asks before installing any that are missing. Default location: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Nativune. Upgrades keep your profile and settings.

If you already have Nativune 0.1.10 or later, the update button in the toolbar offers this version.

Build and known limits

Built by CI run 36397869959 from commit bde2065. The files here are that run's output, checked again after download. Windows x64 only. Setup version 1.0.2.

Before release, these passed:

  • the app self-check (now including the Compact pin and donate buttons) and native-fixture;
  • the release build's check that test-only and benchmark code is removed;
  • the release script's check of the manifest, ZIP contents, checksums and quick-update data;
  • lyrics end-to-end runs on disposable signed-out profiles: on the final lyrics code the quick set (loading, timing, pause, seek, track change, settings kept, Lyrics off, turning Lyrics off while running, songs without lyrics, YouTube Music's own styles unchanged) passed; earlier full runs of the same 2.4.1.2 bundle also covered translation, a German UI, the lyric-host allowlist and a 20-song coverage set;
  • a UI Automation run of the toolbar at widths from 1000 down to the new 353 minimum, the Compact pin, and a real mouse drag of the volume slider (live change, release, track click, and rollback when switching to Compact mid-drag), reading the WebView's actual Windows audio-session volume.

Not tested: Lyrics being on by default after an update, a lyric settings reset after a future lyrics version change, signed-in or Premium playback, a real ad with ad blocking off, the in-app quick update to this version, Narrator and high contrast. The Ko-fi page opening in the browser was not observed.

Nativune 0.1.31

Nativune is an unofficial, native Windows desktop app for YouTube Music. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Google or YouTube, and it does not download media or use a private playback API. Unsigned build. The installer is not yet Authenticode-signed, so Windows may show Unknown Publisher or a Microsoft Defender SmartScreen warning. Download only from this page and check the SHA-256 before running it.

What's new

  • Discord status: the author is now optional. Your Discord card shows a line under the artist that reads "Nativune 0.1.31 · by Hantu-Raya". A new Settings › Discord › Show the author (by Hantu-Raya) under the artist option lets you hide the author for a cleaner card. When it's off, the line reads just "Nativune 0.1.31". The option is on by default, so nothing changes unless you untick it. Clicking the cover still opens the Nativune repository.

Quick update

Setup is unchanged (version 1.0.2), so updating from 0.1.30 is a quick update: only the changed app files are downloaded.

Install

  1. Download Nativune-Setup.exe and SHA256SUMS.txt from this release.
  2. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash .\Nativune-Setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256 and compare it with SHA256SUMS.txt. Expected: 5d10b8ae2cd964ff9134cdcaf085dc4f5c23f57fdd65b74f1892ea1754fa4fe9.

Built by CI run 36327593832 from commit 3717617. The files here are that run's output, checked again after download. Windows x64 only. Setup version 1.0.2.

This is a small update. Only the release build, CI's checks (player regression checks, the release package, manifest, checksums and quick-update data) and a Codex code review ran before release. The app and the Discord end-to-end tests were not run for this change. The new option was not tried in the app or with the real Discord app.

Nativune 0.1.30

What's new

  • Discord status (optional, off by default). Show what you're listening to on your Discord profile, through the Discord desktop app on the same PC.
    • One-click toggle: the new Discord button at the top right of the toolbar turns it on (the icon turns Discord blurple) or off. You can also use More › Show what I'm playing on Discord. Right-click the button, or use More › Discord settings…, to open Settings › Discord for more options.
    • The status shows the song title, artist and album art. It adds a time bar while the song plays, a pause badge while it is paused and a repeat-one badge. The status clears after 10 minutes paused, when playback ends and when you quit Nativune.
    • You choose the status line: Artist, Song title or App only.
    • Clicking the song title opens that song on YouTube Music. An optional Open in YouTube Music button does the same. Both appear only when Nativune can confirm the playing song's link.
    • Hovering the art shows "Nativune 0.1.30 · by Hantu-Raya", and clicking it opens the Nativune repository.
    • It keeps working while Nativune is hidden in the tray or in Compact, and stops as soon as you turn it off.
    • Privacy: while it is on, Nativune sends the song's public details (title, artist, artwork link and song link) over a local connection to the Discord app. Discord shows them to people who can see your activity. Nativune uses no Discord login, token or account access, sends nothing while the setting is off, and does not log song details.

Going back to an older version resets your settings. This version saves settings in a newer format, which older versions don't read.

Quick update

Setup is unchanged (version 1.0.2), so updating from 0.1.29 is a quick update: only the changed app files are downloaded.

Install

  1. Download Nativune-Setup.exe and SHA256SUMS.txt from this release.
  2. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash .\Nativune-Setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256 and compare it with SHA256SUMS.txt. Expected: 0c39eec4e10d728fb43a88d4826f14a6a12e0921c16bcd3f695579bd511f32e6.

Built by CI run 36310620140 from commit 2501919. The files here are that run's output, checked again after download. Windows x64 only. Setup version 1.0.2.

Before release, these passed:

  • the app self-check and native-fixture;
  • the release build's check that test-only and benchmark code is removed;
  • the release script's check of the manifest, ZIP contents, checksums and quick-update data;
  • 116 end-to-end checks that run the app against a local fake Discord. They cover the status card, the pause and 10-minute clear (also across a Discord reconnect, sleep and a page-read gap), reconnecting, rejected updates, songs with the same title, turning the setting off and on while running, quitting, the tray and Compact, and Discord's 15-second update limit;
  • a UI Automation run of the toolbar button, which checks it saves the setting and turns Blurple, and that Discord settings… opens the Discord page;
  • on the owner's PC with the real Discord app: the status card, the hover text, the art and title links, and clearing on close.

Not tested: signed-in playback, a real ad with ad blocking off, Narrator and high contrast.

Nativune 0.1.29

What's new

  • Quieter, more frequent update checks. With Check for updates automatically on (the default), Nativune now checks every 3 hours instead of every 24, and once after the PC wakes if a check came due while it slept.
    • When an update is found, only the update button changes: it gets its dot and accent colour, and the Compact button and tray tooltip mention the update. No bar, no dialog, no download.
    • Automatic checks no longer flash "Checking…" on the button, and a failed automatic check no longer clears a known update. The failure is only logged.
    • Clicking Update while a quiet check is running now works: it opens the update dialog if an update is known, or shows that check's result as usual.
    • If you turned automatic checks off, they stay off.

Quick update

Setup is unchanged (version 1.0.2), so updating from 0.1.28 is a quick update: only the changed app files are downloaded.

Install

  1. Download Nativune-Setup.exe and SHA256SUMS.txt from this release.
  2. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash .\Nativune-Setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256 and compare it with SHA256SUMS.txt. Expected: a3e81545dd076676ec1341c5f37bfe15389ec7828eb9ab6a80c9cac85da90d11.

If you already have Nativune 0.1.10 or later, the update button in the toolbar offers this version.

Build and known limits

Built by CI run 36268492735 from commit de66489; the files here are that run's output, checked again after download. Windows x64 only. Setup version 1.0.2.

Before release, these passed:

  • the app self-check and native-fixture;
  • the release build's check that test-only and benchmark code is removed;
  • the release script's check of the manifest, ZIP contents, checksums and quick-update data;
  • an end-to-end test that runs the installed app against a local fake update server: the button was marked with no "Checking…" state or bar, and a later failed check kept the mark.

Not tested: a real sleep and wake, and clicking Update while a quiet check is running.

Nativune 0.1.28

What's new

  • Less memory while hidden. About 5 seconds after you minimize Nativune or hide it to the tray, it now also releases unused memory from the WebView2 browser and graphics processes. Page and audio processes are left alone, so playback isn't interrupted.
    • Benchmark on one PC: the median private working set while hidden dropped from 148 MiB to 124 MiB.
    • CPU, startup time and the time to show the window again (about 51 ms) did not change beyond noise.

Quick update

Setup is unchanged (version 1.0.2), so updating from 0.1.27 is a quick update: only the changed app files are downloaded.

Install

  1. Download Nativune-Setup.exe and SHA256SUMS.txt from this release.
  2. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash .\Nativune-Setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256 and compare it with SHA256SUMS.txt. Expected: cd055717b4721758a938dc195abe7de748aa591c084075cf36aea4019e9d5b49.

Built by CI run 36250162279 from commit a5f8775; the files here are that run's output, checked again after download. Windows x64 only. Setup version 1.0.2.

Before release, these passed:

  • the app self-check and native-fixture;
  • the release build's check that test-only and benchmark code is removed;
  • the release script's check of the manifest, ZIP contents, checksums and quick-update data.

The memory numbers come from short benchmark runs (under a minute per phase) on one PC, signed out. Long sessions were not measured.

Nativune 0.1.27

What's new

This release prepares Nativune for package managers (winget and Chocolatey). The packages themselves are not published yet.

  • Quiet uninstall. Setup now registers a quiet uninstall command, so tools like winget can remove Nativune without a dialog. Uninstalling now fails with a clear error if Nativune is still running, instead of reporting success.
  • --silent --install-prerequisites. Scripted installs can now let Setup download and install missing prerequisites (for example the Windows App Runtime) from their official Microsoft sources without asking. Plain --silent still never installs prerequisites.

Heads-up: this update is a full download

Setup changed (version 1.0.2), so updating from 0.1.26 downloads the full installer. Later releases can be quick updates again.

Install

  1. Download Nativune-Setup.exe and SHA256SUMS.txt from this release.
  2. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash .\Nativune-Setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256 and compare it with SHA256SUMS.txt. Expected: 2c4ddc5a9ca6a456cef87e1892df81e3c8a1b2feab97932d497de3889e19794e.

Built by CI run 36234350684 from commit 5ea0def; the files here are that run's output, checked again after download. Windows x64 only. Setup version 1.0.2.

Before release, these passed:

  • the app self-check and native-fixture;
  • the installer checks, including the new switch rules;
  • the release build's check that test-only and benchmark code is removed;
  • winget validate on manifests rendered from the release, and a choco pack of the Chocolatey package in CI.

Not yet checked: a real winget install or choco install, and the real prerequisite download under --install-prerequisites.

Nativune 0.1.26

What's new

  • More room for music. The separate title row is gone. Minimize, maximize and close now sit at the right end of the toolbar, and you drag the window by the toolbar's empty middle.
  • Centered Compact title. The song title (and the status line under it) is centered in Compact. Long titles still scroll.
  • Start with Windows is now on by default. The first time this version starts, Nativune turns on Settings › Startup › Start Nativune when I sign in to Windows once and shows a note. By default it starts hidden in the tray. If you turn it off, it stays off. Nativune never re-enables an entry you turned off in Task Manager.

Quick update

Setup did not change in this release, so updating from 0.1.25 downloads only the 4 changed files (about 1.3 MB) instead of the full 182 MB installer. If the quick update can't be used, Nativune asks before downloading the full installer.

Install

  1. Download Nativune-Setup.exe and SHA256SUMS.txt from this release.
  2. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash .\Nativune-Setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256 and compare it with SHA256SUMS.txt. Expected: 08d6a8d6483af66f9ba505a9532d75c256518ba8627d8472b81dcfd409fa8292.

Built by CI run 36231999232 from commit 2bd0037; the files here are that run's output, checked again after download. Windows x64 only. Setup version 1.0.1, unchanged from 0.1.25.

Before release, these passed:

  • the app self-check and native-fixture;
  • the Compact, player-control, icon, launcher and Windows-function checks;
  • hit tests on the new title bar: the toolbar's middle drags, every toolbar button stays clickable, the window buttons and top-edge resize work, including after switching to Compact and back.

Not yet checked:

  • the start-with-Windows default on an installed copy;
  • the title bar in fullscreen, maximized and high contrast;
  • Narrator;
  • signed-in use.

Nativune 0.1.25

What's new

  • Start with Windows (off by default). Turn it on in Settings › Startup › Start Nativune when I sign in to Windows. Choose whether Nativune opens as the full window, in Compact, or hidden in the tray. It works only in copies installed with Setup.
    • If you turn it off in Task Manager or Windows Settings: Nativune shows that and never switches it back on.
    • If the entry points to another copy of Nativune: Settings offers Fix and Remove.
    • When you uninstall: the startup entry is removed.
  • Simpler More menu. It went from 28 rows to 9. Playback (play or pause, previous, next and session shortcuts) and Zoom are now submenus. The Compact window and pause timer items are gone because their toolbar buttons do the same thing. The tray icon and "Remember last Home or Library section" options moved into Settings.
  • Settings has pages. General, Startup, Shortcuts, Privacy and About. Settings that need a restart say so. About shows your install folder, with a button to copy the application status.
  • The tray menu's Quit now reads Quit Nativune.

Heads-up: this update is a full download

Setup changed in this release (its uninstall now removes the startup entry). Quick updates only apply when Setup is unchanged, so this update downloads the full installer.

Expected: 23e6cf4d8334695f6efa1667ac1034d1b0bff61c01e2eb784d010a7519dfb093.
  3. Run Setup. It checks for the Microsoft .NET 10 Runtime, Windows App SDK, VC++ runtime and WebView2, and asks before installing any that are missing. Default location: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Nativune. Upgrades keep your profile and settings.

If you already have Nativune 0.1.10 or later, the update button at the top right of the toolbar offers this version.

Build and known limits

Built by CI run 36224598747 from commit bb652c2; the files here are that run's output, checked again after download. Windows x64 only. Setup version 1.0.1.

Before release, these passed:

  • the app self-check, including the new settings upgrade and startup-entry checks, and native-fixture;
  • the installer checks, including removing a startup entry that points into the install and keeping one that points elsewhere;
  • the release build's check that test-only and benchmark code is removed;
  • the Compact, player-control, icon, launcher and Windows-function checks.

On a throwaway install, with a test registry key instead of the real startup key:

  • Saving Settings created and removed the entry.
  • Starting with Windows opened hidden in the tray, in Compact and as the full window, as chosen, and launching Nativune again brought the hidden window back.
  • The "turned off in Task Manager" and "points to another copy" states showed correctly.

A QA pass by a second model found five problems (#7–#11), all fixed before release.

Not yet checked:

  • a real Windows sign-in with the real startup entry;
  • the tray menu on screen;
  • Narrator reading the new Settings pages aloud;
  • signed-in use.

Nativune 0.1.24

What's new

  • Quick updates. Starting with the next release, updating downloads only the files that changed, usually a few MB, instead of the full 182 MB installer. Nativune reads just those parts of the release's Nativune-Setup.zip. It checks every file against the SHA-256 in the release's file list, which is itself checked against the digest GitHub publishes. The installed copy of Setup then applies the files, with the same rollback as a full update. Installed files that have been damaged are downloaded again. If a quick update fails before Setup starts, Nativune asks whether to download the full installer and shows its size; cancelling never starts the full download.
  • This update itself is a full update. Your installed Setup doesn't have the new quick-update mode yet, so this one release still downloads the full installer. Updates after it can be quick.

What's fixed

  • Setup keeps its backup if a failed update can't be fully undone. Before, Setup deleted its backup of the previous files even when the rollback didn't finish. It now keeps the backup and names the folder in the error message.

Install

  1. Download Nativune-Setup.exe and SHA256SUMS.txt from this release.
  2. In PowerShell run Get-FileHash .\Nativune-Setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256 and compare it with SHA256SUMS.txt. Expected: ac0b1ad0816bb31703727dbd7ebe031f05c187905a9f6fddfea123255d525854.

This release has a fifth file, delta-update.json. The app uses it for quick updates; you don't need to download it.

Build and known limits

Built by CI run 36220566387 from commit 2422eb0; the files here are that run's output, checked again after download. Windows x64 only. Setup now has its own version (1.0.0), separate from the app's.

Before release, these passed:

  • the app self-check, including the new download checks, and native-fixture;
  • the installer checks, including the real download check of Microsoft's four installers;
  • the quick-update installer tests: an update, tampered, missing and extra files, a wrong file-list hash, repairing a damaged file, removing an old file, and usage errors;
  • the release build's check that test-only and benchmark code is removed;
  • the Compact, player-control, icon, launcher and Windows-function checks.

Tests on a throwaway install, using a local test server:

  • Update: the app offered "quick update about 2.6 MB; full Setup is 182 MB", downloaded 2 files, installed them and reopened on the new version.
  • Damaged download: it stopped and offered the full installer.

Not yet checked:

  • a quick update served by GitHub itself (it will first happen with the next release);
  • a crash or power loss while an update is being applied, which can still leave a mix of old and new files, as with a full update;
  • signed-in use;
  • Narrator and High Contrast.
