PyP6 v5.2.2
PyP6 5.2.2 changes how releases are numbered and built. The app itself works exactly as in 5.2.1.
What's different
- The version shown in the title bar and in Settings → About now comes straight from the release tag, so it can no longer disagree with the download you picked.
- Running from source, the script is now simply
PyP6-Roland-P6-Sample-Manager.py, without a version in its name. From a git checkout, About shows the nearest release plus the commits since, e.g.5.2.2-3-gabc1234.
Everything else in 5.2 is unchanged: see the 5.2.0 notes for the pattern preview and the 5.2.1 notes for the live-recorded pattern fix.
Upgrading
Nothing changes in presets or pattern files: everything saved by 5.2.1 loads in 5.2.2 as before.

PyP6 v5.2.1
PyP6 5.2.1 fixes the pattern preview for patterns recorded live. Compared with 5.2.0:
Pattern preview: no more extra hits
A pattern recorded live on the P-6 can hold several overlapping copies of the same note on the same pad. The preview played each of them as a new hit, so a sample could retrigger on every step where the P-6 plays it only once or twice. A chopped slice in one reported pattern played 26 times a loop instead of 6. Overlapping notes of the same pad and key now play as one held note, as on the device.
Everything else in 5.2.0 is unchanged: see the 5.2.0 notes for the pattern preview and the preset pad-number fix.

Upgrading
Nothing changes in presets or pattern files: everything saved by 5.2.0 loads in 5.2.1 as before.
PyP6 v5.2.0
PyP6 5.2 lets you listen to your P-6 patterns on the computer. Compared with 5.1.0:
Pattern preview
In the All banks + patterns view, select a pattern and press ▶ Play, or double-click it. It plays in a loop with the samples currently on the pads, and an orange cursor moves through its steps on the pattern card. Picking another pattern while it plays switches to that one; ■ Stop, playing a pad or leaving the view stops it.
It is made for recognising a pattern, not for reproducing the P-6 exactly:
- Timing: tempo, length, step size and shuffle, and each note's length, micro timing and probability. A note held over several steps plays once, held, as on the device.
- Chopped pads play one slice per key, C4 being the first slice.
- Other pads play chromatically, C4 being the sample's own pitch, plus the pattern's transpose and the pad's coarse and fine tune.
- Pad settings from the pad's P-6 settings file (.PRM): start and end, loop, gate or one-shot, reverse, level, pan, amp envelope, mono/poly and mute groups. PyP6's own pitch and mono settings apply the way export applies them.
- The granular part plays as a grain cloud that follows the pattern's grain size, head position and head speed.
- Not included: filters, effects and knob motion. The status line names any empty pad a pattern uses.
The way notes, lengths and micro timing are stored was worked out from patterns recorded on a real P-6.
Presets keep the right pad number
Each sample's P-6 settings file stores the number of the pad it belongs to (PHRASE). Sending a bank to the P-6 already rewrote it for the pad a sample is on now, but saving a preset copied the file unchanged, so a sample moved to another pad kept its old number in the preset. Presets now get the right number too. An older preset is corrected by loading it and saving it again.

Upgrading
Nothing changes in presets or pattern files: everything saved by 5.1 loads in 5.2 as before.
PyP6 v5.1.0
PyP6 5.1 makes it easy to check which sample is on a pad before moving it. Compared with 5.0.0:
Click to play in Drag mode
In the all-banks views, clicking a pad in Drag mode now plays it, and clicking it again stops it. You can hear what a pad holds right before dragging it, without switching Drag mode off. Dragging still moves the pad and never plays anything, and clicking an empty pad still just selects it.
In the All banks + patterns view the highlighting works in Drag mode too: playing a pad lights the patterns that play it, and selecting a pattern lights its pads.

Nothing changes in presets or pattern files: everything saved by 5.0 loads in 5.1 as before.
PyP6 v5.0.0
PyP6 5.0 adds the P-6's patterns to the sample manager, and ships for Windows, macOS and Linux for the first time. Compared with 4.2.3:
Patterns
All banks + patterns view
A third entry in the view dropdown: all 8 sample banks on one screen, slimmed down to each pad's waveform and ▶ Play, with the P-6's 64 patterns (4 banks × 16) in a strip underneath. Everything, the big waveform included, still fits on one screen.
- See what each pattern plays. Click a pattern and the pads it plays light up green in the grid. Click (or play) a pad and every pattern that plays it lights up instead.
- Pattern card. The selected pattern in full: tempo, length in steps, shuffle, level, transpose and scale, a step view, and every sample it uses with its note count. A red sample is a pad that is empty in the app;
Mmarks a muted part. - Rearrange patterns. Drag a pattern onto another slot to swap the two, or onto an empty slot to move it.
- Clear a pattern the way the P-6's own clear does: all notes, granular notes and knob motion go, tempo, length, FX and sound settings stay. It stays a real pattern file, so restoring it overwrites the slot on the device.
- Everything is undoable with Ctrl+Z.
Keep patterns in step with your pads
With Sync patterns with pad moves ticked, swapping two pads, swapping two banks or moving a bank rewrites every loaded pattern so it keeps playing the same samples at their new addresses: the notes, the granular source, knob-motion targets and per-part mute and quantize all follow the pad. One Ctrl+Z undoes the pad move and the pattern changes together.
Pattern files are kept exactly as the P-6 wrote them; only the numbers that name a pad are ever rewritten.
Straight from and to the P-6
Load… and Save… walk through the device's own procedure, step by step, and pick the P-6 drive up by themselves as soon as it appears:
- Backup: hold [▶] (PLAY) while switching the P-6 on; its patterns are read from the
BACKUPfolder. - Restore: hold [●] (REC) while switching it on; the patterns are copied into
RESTORE. Eject, press [KYBD], done.
A folder on the computer works just as well in both directions.
Patterns in presets
Save Preset and Load Preset have a Patterns 1–4 row next to the sample banks. Pattern banks are stored in the preset under the P-6's own file names and follow the same rules as sample banks: only the ticked ones are replaced or loaded.
Also new
- Clicking an empty pad in the all-banks views now selects it and makes its bank the current one, as clicking a loaded pad does.
Downloads for every platform
Every release is now built automatically, with ffmpeg and ffprobe bundled. Nothing else to install.

Upgrading
Presets saved with 5.0 use preset format 4, since they can carry patterns. 4.x warns before loading one and then loads its sample banks as usual. Everything saved by 4.x loads in 5.0 as before.
