Lorebooks

A world book is what SillyTavern calls a lorebook: a set of entries, each a piece of lore that gets slipped into the prompt when its keywords come up in the conversation. The library lives under World Info in Settings.

Matching the keywords and slipping the lore in happens on your machine. No model is involved, so this part is free and deterministic.

Make a book

  1. Open Settings and go to World Info.
  2. Press New book, or pick a book you already have.
  3. In the book, Edit details sets the name and an optional description. The description is for you; the model never sees it.

On each book in the list, the menu has Duplicate (a fresh copy, switched on nowhere), Export (a file you can back up or share) and Delete. Deleting removes the book and all its entries, and switches it off everywhere.

Each row shows how many entries the book has and how many places it's switched on, like "42 entries · attached ×3". A book that says unattached fires nowhere yet, which is the usual reason a new book seems to do nothing. A Global tag means it fires in every chat.

Write entries

Press New entry and the editor opens on it. It saves as you type.

  • Title is a label for the list. Content is the lore itself. Note is a memo for you.
  • Keyword triggers are the words that bring the entry up. Type one and press Enter. An entry with no keywords is always on.
  • Enabled turns an entry off without deleting it.
  • Priority, Always include, Fire mode, Placement and Inject at a depth in history decide how an entry competes for room and where it lands in the prompt. Their in-app help explains each.
  • Drag an entry by its handle to reorder; the order sets the priority.
  • Backfill titles fills in blank titles from each entry's keywords. It's mostly useful after an import.

Two settings apply to every book: Scan depth and Token budget. They're under Settings, Chat behavior, in World info. In a shared room, the host's values are the ones in use.

Switch a book on

A book does nothing until it's attached somewhere. You can attach one in four places:

Where How
Every chat In the book, open Where it fires and switch on Fires in every chat.
One character On the character's Links tab, press Link a book. Or in the book's Where it fires panel, use Attach to a character.
One persona In the persona's editor, pick the book in Lore book. (The editor picks one book per persona.) Or switch the persona on in the book's Where it fires panel.
One chat In the chat's This chat tab, open World books and press Attach a world book. Only the host can.

The room's World books section separates Inherited books from Attached to this chat. Manage an inherited book on its character, persona or global source. To let the room's rules write to one of your books, attach it to the chat explicitly; appearing as inherited does not grant that permission.

A character's book fires whenever that character is seated in the room. A persona's book fires in any room where that persona is playing. If a book is attached in several places, each entry still fires once.

In a shared room, the host's characters, global books and chat books apply. Other players' persona books are included only while the host allows Members' persona lore under This chat → Host controls → Storytelling.

A character linked to a book has a role, primary or auxiliary. A character has at most one primary book, usually the one that arrived with the card. The role is a label; both kinds fire the same way.

Attaching a book to a chat also lets that chat's automation rules add new entries to it. → Automation

Bring your books over from SillyTavern

The reliable path is the whole-folder import. Open Settings, Backup & Restore, Import, choose Import a folder..., and pick your SillyTavern user folder. Every lorebook in its worlds folder becomes a world book named after its file, and books are re-linked to the characters SillyTavern had them on, by exact name. Lorebooks embedded in a character card come in with the card. → Coming from SillyTavern

  • Imported books are switched on nowhere, except the ones linked to characters. If you had a book active everywhere in SillyTavern, switch on Fires in every chat for it. Your SillyTavern global World Info settings aren't imported.
  • Nothing you have is touched. A book with the same entries as one you already have is skipped as already in your library. A book that shares a name with a different book of yours lands beside it as "Name (2)". A book you edited in Orbweaver keeps your edits.
  • One file at a time works too. Import a world-info book on the World Info page reads a raw SillyTavern world file as well as an Orbweaver export, under the same rules.

Keywords, content, always-on and selective entries, regex keys, order (as priority), position, depth, role and the enabled flag come across and work. Blank or repeated titles are fine. The other SillyTavern activation settings are kept on the entry but nothing uses them yet; see below.

Check that an entry fires

If you're the host, open Show details, then the Preview tab. Open Diagnostics there to see how many entries would fire on the next turn, which keywords matched, and how many were dropped. If an entry you expected isn't there, check these in order:

  1. Is the book attached somewhere that reaches this chat?
  2. Is the entry Enabled?
  3. Is the keyword in a message within the Scan depth? Keywords also match the names of the characters and personas in the room.
  4. Is the Token budget high enough? Entries that don't fit are dropped, lowest priority first, and ones marked Always include are never dropped. At zero there's no limit.

Kept from SillyTavern, not active yet

An imported entry keeps every SillyTavern activation setting it came with. The ones the engine acts on today are keys, content, constant and selective, position, depth and role, order (as priority), the enabled flag and regex keys. The rest are stored untouched and not applied: secondary keys, probability, per-entry scan depth, case sensitivity, whole-word matching, inclusion groups, sticky, cooldown, delay, the recursion flags, vectorized, triggers, the character filter and the match-against fields. The entry editor lists them read-only under Kept from SillyTavern, not active yet, the import report counts them per book, and an export hands them back. Until they're active, an entry that relied on them fires on its keywords alone.

The editor has no controls for those fields and no switch for regex keys: imported regex keys keep working, but you can't turn the mode on for a new entry. The scan depth and token budget are global, not per entry.
