PaperRoute Tracker v0.9.0
PaperRoute Tracker v0.9.0 — Journal Choice & Guidance
This release helps you decide where a manuscript should go and what that journal will ask of you, and lets anyone new learn the route from an example. Everything still works offline: online help is listed in one place, starts only when you ask, and Work offline stops all of it. It follows the v0.9.0-rc.1 Preview.
Included
- Journal shortlist. Each manuscript's Overview keeps the journals you are considering, in your order, as Considering, Preferred, Backup, or Ruled out, with your reasons and how each submission ended. After a rejection or withdrawal, the shortlist offers the next journal as the target; nothing changes until you accept.
- Choosing a journal. Each shortlisted journal has trust questions adapted, with attribution, from the Think. Check. Submit. checklist (CC BY 4.0), and PaperRoute's own fit questions, with your history with that journal beside them. Nothing is ticked for you. How to choose a journal opens the User Guide's new section.
- Journal facts and metrics. Look Up Facts... on the Journals page finds a journal by ISSN or name in DOAJ and OpenAlex (both CC0) and previews what it found: fees, license, peer review, time to publication, homepage, and links such as aims and scope. Only blank fields are filled, each fact keeps its source and date, and facts over a year old are marked. Metrics show their definitions and are never combined into a score.
- Find Journals... on a manuscript's shortlist finds journals that recently published articles matching keywords you review. It shows the exact request first (never the abstract, notes, or files) and the evidence for each journal: matching articles, open access and fees, publisher, and your history. Nothing is scored or ranked.
- Your citations. A Your Citations tab on Insights shows how your published work has been cited, from OpenAlex, with each figure's definition. You confirm which works are yours, and opening the tab sends nothing.
- Example library. Explore a fictional research group's manuscripts from the welcome, Import & Export, or Help, in a separate window with its own storage. Your library is never opened, and the example is discarded when it closes.
- Online services and Work offline. Settings → Preferences... → Online services lists every service PaperRoute can contact, with its hosts and exactly what it sends, and lets you turn each off. Work offline stops them all, update checks included, and the rail shows which mode you are in. An optional OpenAlex key is kept encrypted for your Windows account and sent only to OpenAlex; PaperRoute includes no key of its own.
- Optional AI assistant, off until you turn it on, with Claude and your own Anthropic key, or a model on your own computer:
- Read Decision Letter... proposes the decision, dates, and each reviewer's comment, every comment checked word for word against the letter.
- Read Author Instructions... turns pasted instructions for authors into proposed checklist requirements, each checked against the sentence it came from.
- Suggest a Starting Point... drafts a response to a comment, and Draft Cover Letter... a cover letter.
- Each window shows what it sends and to whom before sending, and nothing changes until you accept. Test Connection checks the setup before you save it.
- Export Packet... in the Submission Packet vault saves the files you choose as a .zip with a summary page, a SHA-256 checksum list, and RO-Crate 1.3 metadata that research tools can read. It previews each file's fingerprint and any author names hidden inside it, which you must acknowledge; files are copied exactly as they are. Anonymized packets name no authors. It is local and changes nothing in your library.
- Also: the Journal Library's own Shortlist mark is now called Watch list (existing marks are kept), very long notes no longer stop an Excel export, settings are saved safely with a
settings.bak, and network problems are explained in plain words. - Fixed since rc.1. In the Dark theme, the group headings in Update Your Citations and in a journal's Facts and Metrics, and the captions of unavailable check boxes and buttons, can now be read. The figures on Insights > Your Citations sit inside their card.
Before upgrading
v0.9 upgrades the library to Schema 9, which adds journal shortlists, journal ISSNs, facts, and metrics, and a record of where any accepted AI suggestion came from. The upgrade validates your library and changes only the schema marker; manuscript and author data, managed files, and automatic backups stay byte-for-byte, and nothing is inferred. v0.8 cannot open a library after v0.9 has used it, so make a portable backup with v0.8 first (Settings → Backup Library...) and keep it. Saved citation figures are kept in citations.json and included in backups; AI assistant keys are never in backups. The upgrade notes explain the details.
Verification
Every automated test passes, with none skipped. The published assets, the live updater from v0.8.0, the Schema 9 upgrade on a synthetic library, a clean install, and the new windows at 125% and 150% in Light and Dark are recorded in #97.
