v1.2.0: 6DOF Headset Tracking and new Wolf Mode camera

This update implements 6 degrees of freedom positional tracking, allowing you to physically lean, walk and crouch in your space. I also updated the camera for when playing as a wolf.

Additions:

  • 6DOF tracking for gameplay, Wolf Mode, cutscenes and scene transitions. It does not affect your in-game position, but acts more as an offset to give you a little bit of wiggle room for leaning or crouching. Recentering your headset's view calibrates your height, placing you where Link's head is.
  • New Wolf Mode camera. Instead of being stuck in 3rd person, you now play as a wolf from Midna's perspective on Link's back. This second-person perspective allows you to view the world from a character's eyes without compromising visibility, as third-person did initially.

Changes:

  • The "Hide Body" option has been renamed to "Experimental: Show Link's Body" and defaults to OFF. This works around all issues that both other users and I have had with the player model, and allows me to focus on more important features for the time being. Viewmodel functionality has not been affected.

v1.1.0: The VR settings update

So far my biggest feature requests have been third person and right-handedness for sword wielding. In this update I have added those and a few other feature, with the biggest change being VR support including inputs for the Dusklight UI, as well as a new VR specific settings menu. You can access the Dusklight menu by holding down RS (click the right stick) and the right trigger together for a couple seconds. The VR settings are found in in Settings>VR.

Additions:

  • The Dusklight overlay in VR, accessible by holding down RS and the right trigger together for a couple seconds.
  • A new VR specific settings tab, accessible under Settings>VR.
  • A toggleable third person mode. Fully compatible with a regular gamepad, third person mode allows you to experience the game without the need for VR controllers or 6DOF. While in this mode, aiming is tracked to the headset's direction, rather than the right controller.
  • The option to hide Link's body. Off by default, this hides Link's entire player model except for hands and items, but shows his model when watching a cutscene.
  • An experimental first person camera option. Cutscenes are now third person by default, and this setting reverts that change.
  • A right-handed sword toggle. This allows you to hold the sword in your right hand and the shield in your left, similar to the Wii version of the game, with motion controls swapped as well.
  • Smooth rotation on the right stick for regular controllers.

Changes:

  • The reticle now gets bigger the further away it is from the camera across all items, helping maintain visibility when aiming for further targets such as the monkey or beehive with the owl.
  • The camera now faces the right way when it changes shots in cutscenes. If the camera quickly changes direction, such as showing another angle, the headset view now snaps to that rotation. Helpful for quick angle changes, but does not effect smooth camera movements.
  • The camera faces Link when L/Z Targeting if third person mode is enabled.
  • Transitions between areas are now in third person to prevent visual bugs, even when third person is disabled.

Fixes:

  • Properly fixed the gamma/brightness issue. Instead of attempting to correct the gamma every frame, Meta Link and VDXR are now able to directly read the game's color format rather than encoding it.

Huuuuge thank you to everybody who has played, discussed, and shared this mod. It genuinely means so much to me to create something for my favorite franchise and see so much excitement and support from so many different users!

Color hotfix and rebrand

Choose a tag to compare

@JoeyAW JoeyAW released this 18 Aug 06:02

The number one complaint that I have gotten is that the game and it's colors look way too bright and washed out. I have added a temporary gamma boost that enhances the colors and darkness of the game. In the future I am going to look into an actual fix (likely the format of the game's textures, according to another modder) and it will look exactly the same as the original game, but it is basically there with this patch.

Earlier today an actual dev from the Twilit Realm (Dusklight group) reached out to me and said that the name of the mod needs to change ASAP. Apparently some people have gotten confused about the mod and thought that it was an official feature supported by Dusklight. As much as I would love to contribute and implement this the devs are likely to allow this to exist separately, and won't merge it with their repo.

Changes:

  • Added a temporary gamma boost to fix the colors being washed out or too bright
  • Added a hidden gamma slider in the debug menu (enable the debug menu in the port's settings, then press Shift+F1 WHILE IN FLATSCREEN) under Graphics>VR gamma correction. If you are on SteamVR there is a separate slider for that, as I believe it is the only OpenXR backend/software that actually got it right.
  • Added support for the Dusklight menu in VR. You can bring it up by pressing F1, just like in flatscreen, however you cannot control it with the headset yet, so you will need to use your keyboard. This is part of the next big update that I am working on.
  • Replaced the Dusklight VR logo with the new one, TPVR
  • Removed "Twilit Realm Presents" on the main menu to reduce confusion
  • Updated the README with new logo and name, removing all traces of "Dusklight VR"

Dusklight VR 1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@JoeyAW JoeyAW released this 16 Aug 00:56

This is the first public release of the mod. Just unzip the file, open your VR software of choice (SteamVR, Meta Link, or Virtual desktop with VDXR), and run the EXE. Virtual Desktop is recommended for performance. You will need to either press enter on your keyboard or click the "Play" button in the window on your desktop to start the game.

Known issues:

  • I only tested the game on a Quest 2 and 3. I have no idea whether or not it will work on any other headset, especially the controls.

  • Wolf Link sections are in 3rd person. This is because Wolf Link is on 4 legs, meaning he has to rotate his whole body to turn, compared to a human standing up. This gets his viewmodel in the way and throws the camera around in a disorienting way. I am open to suggestions on how to handle these sections, but for now you are welcome to enjoy the view in VR or just rest and play these parts in flatscreen.

  • Sometimes loading a new scene, such as going into a building or a new area, will place the camera either too low or too high. To combat this, after loading stand still without pressing any buttons for about 3 seconds, or until you see the UI (buttons, hearts, map, etc)

  • Cutscenes are completely broken. I have them set to be first person when Link is loaded in, and third person when he is not rendered. However, sometimes Link is loaded, just out of bounds, and you were obviously never supposed to be able to see outside the edges of the screen, causing characters and objects to disappear and some of their animations to freeze. This can't be fixed without re-animating every cutscene in the game, so it is recommended to watch these in flatscreen.

  • A lot of effects use screenspace reflections, meaning it draws what you see on a texture, like the water surface reflecting. These all have to be manually disabled one by one, so it will take some time and likely a few builds to find each effect and turn them off.
