Thanks to spriteice
More fixes found by spriteice in his fork. Thank you again! Each commit links the one of his it comes from.
Smoother on Windows
Some players on Windows saw the game hitch in play, even on fast graphics cards: frames arrived 30 to 60 ms apart instead of 17. The engine's short waits on Windows lasted much longer than asked, because they were rounded to Windows' clock tick, and one of them holds up the whole game at every vertical blank. Those waits now use Windows' high-resolution timer. On spriteice's PC, the share of frames reaching the screen late went from 8–26% to 0.7%.
Smoother everywhere
When two of the game's threads take turns, the one giving way paused for a millisecond (longer on Windows) before carrying on, with nothing running in between. It now steps aside only until the other has taken over. On a Mac, in four minutes of 99th Street: 8 slow frames instead of 34.
Building it yourself
The repository now has everything needed to build the game from your own disc, and the README gives the steps. Until now a build from source could not be finished: two files the downloads were built with had never been published. The toolkit that makes this possible is spriteice's.
Also
- Windows: the game's requests to give memory back, which all failed, now work. There was about one a frame, each also written to a log file.
- Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android: a file read could, rarely, return data another thread had asked for.
- Two of the emulated chips' clocks went wrong once the computer had been on for a while (15 minutes on Windows, seconds on the others). They no longer do.
How it was tested
On a Mac, with Metal: New Game, then 99th Street for four minutes, against 0.5.3, run back to back: the same frame rate, 8 slow frames instead of 34, and 5% of frames late instead of 9%. Windows (under Wine) and Linux (Mesa): the game starts and runs its title screen. The Windows timing fix only shows on Windows itself, where spriteice measured it. The Android and iPhone builds were built and checked, not run.
Everything else is in the changelog, and installation instructions are in the README.
