Sharper in the distance

Buildings and windows far away shimmered as you moved, and could look like they were fighting with each other: every texture was drawn from its full-size image. The game ships smaller copies of its textures for distance (mipmaps), as the console used them; they are used now, with 16× anisotropic filtering.

Anti-aliasing

Two kinds, either or both, off by default: SMAA, a quick pass over each frame, and MSAA 2×, 4× or 8×, which draws every edge with that many samples. On the Mac: Video › Anti-aliasing. Windows: the Video menu or F8. Linux: F8. iPhone and iPad: the ⚙ button. Not on Android yet. MSAA and anisotropic filtering first appeared in spriteice's fork -- thank you again!

Reflective glass

Glass and other reflective surfaces -- Dogenzaka Hill's footbridge, for one -- showed dark bars and stripes that shimmered. Their reflections are now made the way the console made them.

Also

  • A texture the game reads in two ways (clamped in one place, repeated in another) was read the first way everywhere for the rest of the session. The characters' shading texture is one of them.

How it was tested

On a Mac, with Metal: Dogenzaka Hill, free and in the race against Beat, with each change compared on consecutive frames of one run, with and without it; then the release build on the title screen and on Dogenzaka Hill with SMAA and MSAA 4×, on Metal and on OpenGL. Windows (under Wine) and Linux (Mesa): the game starts and runs its title screen. The Android and iPhone builds were built and checked, not run.

Everything else is in the changelog, and installation instructions are in the README.
