Boost v1.3.1

@github-actions github-actions released this 21 Oct 20:28

What's new in 1.3.1

  • Copy Report. A button in the menu bar popover copies a plain text summary for a bug report or a forum thread: your Mac, memory pressure, swap, the biggest apps and the last day's peak. It lists app names and sizes only, with no file paths or user name, and nothing is sent anywhere.
  • Large Files fixes. Music and TV library folders are never listed or trashed, so a track can no longer vanish from those apps. Each folder gets its own share of the scan, and the notice names any folder that ran out. Trashing every file in a long list now rescans instead of saying nothing was found. A personal folder that links outside your home folder is refused.
  • The memory report says which processes it leaves out, and the screenshot tool no longer changes your preferences.

Install

brew install --cask kernel-hunter/boost/boost

Or download Boost.zip below and drag it to Applications.

Boost is not notarized. It is signed with a local certificate, so a direct download is stopped by Gatekeeper the first time. Homebrew handles that for you. If you downloaded the zip by hand, right-click the app and choose Open. Building from source avoids the question:

git clone https://github.com/Kernel-Hunter/boost.git
cd boost && ./Scripts/build.sh

What's new in 1.3.0

  • Large Files tab. Lists the biggest single files in Downloads, Desktop, Documents, Movies, Music and Pictures, with how long since you last opened each. It scans only when you press Scan, so macOS asks for folder access when you choose to. Folders, app bundles and photo libraries are never listed, nothing is ticked, and anything you remove goes to the Trash.
  • History hint. Boost only records while it is open. When it has little history, the History card now offers Start at login.

Fixes found in a code review of 1.2:

  • Auto-pause no longer freezes an app that is playing audio, on a call or downloading.
  • An auto-paused app is woken correctly when you switch back to it quickly, and an app left frozen across a relaunch wakes when you switch to it.
  • Pausing an app can no longer freeze Boost itself when Boost was started from that app's terminal.
  • Quitting Boost resumes only what Boost froze. It no longer wakes jobs you stopped yourself.
  • Projects refuses a scan folder that contains your home folder, skips app and framework bundles, and counts recent edits to your source files as activity.
  • Uninstall refuses helper apps nested inside another app, and leaves a leftover folder unticked when another installed app has the same name.

Boost v1.2.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 05 Oct 17:23

What's new in 1.2.0

  • Menu bar popover. Click the icon to see memory pressure, a graph, swap, cached and compressed memory, your five biggest apps, and free disk space. Pause or quit an app from there, or hit Free Memory.
  • History. A reading every minute, kept for a week. Chart it over 2 hours, 24 hours or 7 days, with the peak, the average and each time your Mac went into swap.
  • Auto-pause. Pick apps to freeze after 5 to 60 minutes in the background. Each one wakes when you switch to it. If Boost crashes, a watchdog resumes everything it froze.
  • Alerts. A notice when memory has stayed tight for a minute, naming the app using the most. The swap alert is still there.
  • Projects tab. Finds node_modules, Rust target, SwiftPM .build, virtualenvs and similar folders in projects you have not touched for 30 to 180 days. Everything goes to the Trash.
  • Uninstall tab. Lists what an app left in your Library, with sizes, before anything moves. Exact matches only, to the Trash, with Undo.
  • Settings. Start at login, and an option to always show the percentage in the menu bar.
  • New app icon, and sizes under 1 MB now show in KB.
