Splitting Syllables

Devon Shoutz edited this page Sep 13, 2026 · 2 revisions

The first step to syncing a song is to split the words into syllables. Not every song needs this, and it is completely fine if you do not want to split the words.

What is Syllable Splitting

If you've ever seen a song that sings only half of the word and then other half, that is splitting the word into syllables. This helps the song feel more immersive and accurate to the singer. You have to be careful with splitting syllables however. Just because a word has multiple syllables does not necessarily mean it should be split. If you split every single word into its syllables, it might actually hurt the immersion more than help.

Note

It is generally better to not split words at all than to split too many

Please be careful with how you split words

How to Split Words

If you see a word that needs to be split, just tap on the word. This will bring up the split editor. You will see the word and there will be a cursor in it. Move the cursor to where you want the word to be split. You can either use the arrows or you can drag the cursor to the position you would like. Once you have the cursor in position, press Split here. This will separate the word into two parts. If you make a mistake, you can move your cursor to where the mistake is and press Join here. Or if you want all splits to be removed, press Join all syllables. Once you are done, you can press Save.

How to Determine If a Word Needs to Be Split

Figuring out if a word needs to be split can be pretty tricky sometimes. This is much more of a feeling than a rule. Listening to the song is the best way to determine if a word should be split or not. If you are watching the lyrics and a long word feels off when it gets animated, that probably means it should've been split. If you are watching the lyrics and it feels off when a word was split into multiple parts, that probably means it should not have been split.

While this is very feeling based, there are some general guidelines that can help with determining if a word should be split.

The first one is pretty simple. If a word has a - in it, it almost always should be split. For example La-la-la or Light-pink.

If a word is only one syllable, it almost never should be split. For example, truck would almost never make sense to be split as tru / ck. This just does not make sense. It would look very peculiar.

For words that are multiple syllables, this is where it can get tricky. Listening to the beats and how the artist sings the word can help you determine if it should be split. Let's say you have the word family. This word is 3 syllables (fa / mi / ly). If this word is sung quickly and in one beat, then it should be left as one syllable. However, if they hold out the first two syllables and the third syllable lands on the next beat, then it should be split as fami / ly. Whether or not a word should be split into its syllables is entirely dependent on how the artist sings the word. Again, this is not a general rule that can apply to every word, but it can be a good guideline. The best way is to listen to how the artist sings the word and if it feels like it should be split.

This is a good example of a song that has good splits if you are still confused. This is an example of a song that has very bad splits. Do NOT split words like this

Note

If you are unsure, it is always better to not split words than to incorrectly split one
