New

• Light or dark, whatever the phone is. Settings → App → Appearance → Theme: the same as the phone, light, or dark.

Improved

• A much smoother player. The background behind the player drifted all the time, and every pane of glass redrew itself for it on every frame. It is still now, and the player draws only when something changes: on the lyrics, late frames went from about half to almost none.
• Moving covers cost far less. Their frames are read without holding up the screen, and the colours under the cover fade from one frame to the next instead of stepping.
• Karaoke at full keeps the music cleaner, without the metallic warble (#74).
• The screen stays on while the lyrics are open and a song plays (#75).

Fixed

• Offline with mobile data on and no coverage. Square stayed online and the downloads did not play. It now notices that the data is not getting through, goes offline, and plays them.
• A playlist that cannot be loaded shows its downloaded songs instead of an error.
• YouTube Music songs stopping halfway until another song was picked. Square now picks the song up again where it stopped (#76).
• Albums played shuffled after shuffling a playlist. The play button at the top of a page now plays in order (#71).
• A grey wash under dark covers in the player when the phone uses the light theme.

Which APK

• square-2.5.2-arm64-v8a.apk: almost every phone from the last few years.
• square-2.5.2-armeabi-v7a.apk: older or entry-level phones with a 32-bit processor.
• square-2.5.2-universal.apk: works on both, if you are not sure. It is larger.

The update offered inside the app picks the right one by itself.

After installing

Android takes a while to optimise a freshly installed app, and until it does the interface is noticeably slower. To do it straight away, open the app once and give it a few seconds: that is when it hands Android the list of what to compile. Then, with the phone connected:

adb shell cmd package compile -m speed-profile -f dev.lelonio.square

Run before the app has been opened, the command finds nothing to compile and leaves it as it was.
