Deckster V1.2.0

Every questionnaire the builder writes is now encrypted, and a password means something narrower than it did: whether the questionnaire may be used.

What's new

Encrypted by default. There is no longer a choice between a plain file and a protected one. The answers are never sitting in plain words in a file that gets passed around — a class group chat, a shared drive, the phone of whoever is hosting.

A password now controls access, not secrecy. Add one if only certain people should be able to use a questionnaire. Without one the file still cannot be read, but anyone holding it can play it. With one, they cannot — not in the app, and not by opening it in the builder, which would otherwise have been the obvious way around it. Same trust boundary in both places, no developer bypass.

The app says when a questionnaire is ready. For a file with no password, the moment it is picked. For a protected one, only once the password has been accepted — which is the only confirmation anywhere that the password was right.

Six new question sets in the builder: Programming fundamentals, Arithmetic, Binary numbers, Political science, Philippine history and Life of Rizal. Ten subjects, 480 questions, all editable before you build.

Honest about what it protects

A questionnaire with no password is opened with a key that ships inside the app. That is obfuscation, not secrecy: it stops a text editor, not somebody willing to decompile an Android app. The builder says as much in those words rather than implying more.

A questionnaire with a password is genuinely closed. The key is derived from the password, so there is nothing in the app that opens it. Lose the password and the file is lost — there is no back door, which is the point.

Installing

  1. Download deckster-1.2.0.apk below.
  2. Open it. Android will ask whether to allow installs from this source — allow it for your browser or file manager.
  3. Play Protect may warn that the app was not scanned. Choose Install anyway; it says this about any app not distributed through the Play Store.

Installs over an earlier sideloaded version without losing your name or mascot. If you installed from the Play Store, uninstall that first — Play signs its copy with a different key, and Android will refuse the swap.

Notes

  • Questionnaires built before this release still open. The older format is still read, and still treated as requiring a password.
  • Android only for now, 7.0 and up.
  • Everything happens on your phones. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account.
  • The APK is universal, so it carries native code for every processor Android runs on. Play Store installs are roughly half this size.

Quizzes you write yourself — and can lock, so nobody reads the answers on the way to the phone that hosts.

What's new

Protected questionnaires. The question builder now asks what kind of file to write. Open is a plain .json anyone can read and edit by hand. Protected encrypts the questions under a password you choose — without it the file is unreadable, even to someone who knows exactly how it was made. Load it in the app, type the password, play. No internet needed for any of it: the phone hosting a round is running a hotspot, so a scheme that needed a connection would fail exactly when it was used.

The builder is one question at a time. Fill the form, save it, and it drops onto a list while the form empties for the next. The live JSON preview is gone — the list of what you've written so far is the thing you actually want while writing.

Practice. Take a round by yourself. No hotspot, no room, nobody else.

Up to 100 questions a round, up from 20. Ask for more than a category holds and you get what it has, rather than being refused.

A short walkthrough the first time you open a screen, and never again.

Fixed

  • The lobby is a table of cards now, with no limit on players — the old ring of eight was a drawing limit, never a real one.
  • A phone that walks out of range stops holding a seat, and a host who disappears no longer leaves everyone waiting on a room that is gone.
  • The back button goes up a level instead of closing the app. It will not leave a room: use the labelled control, which says what it does.
  • Opening a password-protected file was taking 16 seconds. It is now instant.
  • Picking a difficulty and then loading your own questions produced a room whose start button did nothing at all.
  • A round that will not start now says why.

Since 1.1.0

Nothing you can see. The app itself is unchanged — this build only stops Android 15 seeing two theme attributes it deprecated, and adds the key iOS needs before it will let an app touch the local network. It is 1.1.1 rather than 1.2.0 for that reason: the version says what changed, and what changed was the build, not the game.

The four new question sets — Programming fundamentals, Arithmetic, Life of Rizal and Philippine history — are in the question builder and need no app update at all.

Installing

  1. Download deckster-1.1.1.apk below.
  2. Open it. Android will ask whether to allow installs from this source — allow it for your browser or file manager.
  3. Play Protect may warn that the app was not scanned. Choose Install anyway; it says this about any app not distributed through the Play Store.

Installs over an earlier version without losing your name or mascot.

Notes

  • Android only for now, 7.0 and up.
  • Everything happens on your phones. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account.
  • A password-protected questionnaire cannot be recovered if the password is lost. There is no back door — that is what makes it worth having.
  • The APK is universal, so it carries native code for every processor Android runs on. Play Store installs are roughly half this size, since Google sends only the parts your phone needs.

Deckster V1.0.0

@LodiAniez LodiAniez released this 21 Aug 14:14

Offline quiz races for people in the same room.

One person opens a room and turns on their hotspot; everyone else joins it and picks that room from a list. There is no signup, no account, and no internet — the questions ship inside the app and the host's phone runs the game.

  • Nothing to type. Rooms announce themselves on the network. Join the hotspot, tap the room you want.
  • Several rooms at once. Five friends can each open a lobby on one Wi‑Fi; you choose which to enter.
  • 5–15 seconds a question, host's choice, defaulting to 10. Answers can be changed until the buzzer — whatever is selected at zero counts.
  • Nothing is revealed mid-round. No scores, no positions, no feedback on a correct answer. Everything lands at once at the end, with medals, honours, and every question you got wrong beside the right answer.

Installing

Download the APK and open it. Android will warn that it comes from an unknown source; that is expected for anything not distributed through the Play Store.

If you see "App not installed", that is Play Protect, not a broken download. Google blocks apps from developers it has not verified, and the dialog does not say so — it fails with a generic message and offers no way past it.

To install:

  1. Open the Play Store → tap your profile picture → Play Protect
  2. Tap the gear icon → turn off Scan apps with Play Protect
  3. Install the APK
  4. Turn Play Protect back on

You may also need to allow "Install unknown apps" for whichever app opens the file — the permission is per-app, so granting it to Chrome does not cover your file manager.

Requires Android 7.0 or newer. Works on arm64, 32-bit ARM and x86_64, so it also installs on an emulator.

Notes

Already have an older build? Uninstall it first. This version changes the app's internal package name, so Android treats it as a separate app — installing over the top would leave you with two Decksters. Your name and animal are stored in the app, so you will be asked for them again.

The app is self-signed with the same key as before. From this version on, updates install over each other without uninstalling.

Expense Nagger 1.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@LodiAniez LodiAniez released this 20 Aug 08:38

A budget tracker that insults you when you overspend. Android, fully offline — no account, no server, nothing leaves your phone.

What's new in 1.2.0

Log a whole shopping trip in one pass. Pick the category once, then add a line for each thing you bought. Two items used to mean two trips through a five-field screen; now it is one. The saving grows with the shop.

Every expense has a name. "Groceries ₱4,180" is a number. "Chicken Breast ₱200, Pasta ₱50, Rice ₱340" is something you can argue with. Item names are required, because an expense nobody named is exactly the one you cannot account for a fortnight later.

Quick add on the dashboard. One thing, bought today, in a category you have used before — name it, price it, tap. No screen to open. The category stays selected, so the second one is faster.

Everything logged this cycle, grouped by category. Each group collapses to save space and remembers whether you closed it.

Smaller and less nosy. The download dropped from 90 MB to 58 MB, and the app no longer asks for your camera, microphone or storage.

Receipt scanning is not in this release. On-device OCR reads a receipt's total and the shop's name well enough, but not the individual line items — which is precisely what the new itemised form wants from it. It ships when it can do that job rather than half of it.

Installing

Download the APK and open it. Android will warn that it comes from an unknown source; that is expected for anything not distributed through the Play Store.

Notes

The app is self-signed. Every release is signed with the same key, so updates install over each other without uninstalling first, and your logged expenses survive.
