WinHookAudio 0.1.2: an ASIO driver for your DAW with hardware devices, virtual cables, ASIO Bridges and LAN audio, set up in a native Control Panel.

Pre-release. The Virtual Cable kernel driver (WinHookAudio.sys) is experimental and only test-signed. The new 16-cable driver builds and passes the offline checks, but has not yet been installed and tested live. The setup program has not yet been tested through a full install and uninstall on a clean PC. Please try it on a test PC first.

What's new

  • More sample rates: 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 and 192 kHz. Your DAW's own sample rate menu now works too: picking a rate there sets the Master Clock.
  • 16 Virtual Cables (was 8): WinHookAudio Output 9..16 and Input 9..16 in Windows. Settings from 0.1.1 still load (the new cables start as stereo). More cables do not add delay: each cable has its own buffer, and a cable nothing uses costs nothing.
  • One app at a time: only one app can use WinHookAudio Master. A second app gets a message naming the app that has it. Bridges are not affected.
  • 32-bit DAWs: the Master and Bridges now also work in 32-bit DAWs.
  • Windows on ARM: ARM64 DAWs and x64 DAWs running on ARM PCs are supported (built and tested in CI only, not yet on a real ARM PC). The Virtual Cable driver is not available on ARM yet.

Install

  1. Run the setup.
  2. On Components, choose the Virtual Cable:
    • Not signed: test-signed driver: setup trusts the test certificate and turns on Windows Test Mode. Secure Boot must be off. Restart when asked.
    • No Virtual Cable: the ASIO Master, the Bridges, hardware devices and the network work without Test Mode.
  3. In your DAW, choose WinHookAudio Master as the ASIO device.

Uninstalling removes the device and the driver. It turns Test Mode off only if setup turned it on.

Tips

  • At 176.4 or 192 kHz, use a buffer of 512 or more. 128 frames at 192 kHz is only 0.67 ms, too short for most PCs.

Known limits

  • No Microsoft-signed driver yet, so the Virtual Cable needs Test Mode.
  • A short dropout is still possible on a busy or virtual machine.
  • With a Shared device as output #1 (the clock), an Exclusive input can still resample now and then. For recording, keep output #1 Exclusive.
  • Tested on a virtual machine only, not yet on physical audio hardware, a real ARM PC or a real 32-bit DAW.
  • The ASIO drivers are built without the Steinberg ASIO SDK (the project's own common/WHAAsio.h).
