The 53 named characters of the Sol War. Part of the Game Reference; data from the Starlancer Wiki (CC BY-SA 3.0). The player flies in the 45th Tigers; generic recruitable wingmen with no scripted plot fate are marked 45th wingman (generic).
- Vladimir Kulov (Coalition) — the principal antagonist. Rose through the Secret Police and Political Council; masterminded the Deimos Massacre and the first strike. His flagship is the CS Volga. (Captured alive in Mission 17; present at the final battle.)
- Captain Robert Foster (Alliance) — the player's first CO. A UK veteran who founded the 45th Volunteers after both his sons were killed at the war's outbreak. Dies ramming the ANS Reliant into the CS Volga (Mission 15).
- Captain Yoshinobu Mukai (Alliance) — captain of the ANS Yamato; becomes the player's CO after Foster's death.
- Maria Enriquez "Red Fox" — the squadron leader who briefs the player on every mission.
- Mike Horrigan "Moose" — the player's back-seat co-pilot in every mission.
- Mark Bannister "Bandit" & Linc Stevenson "Diceman" — the player's key wingmen, who rise to wing leader in turn.
- Brad Callan "Viper" (traitor) — the 45th's first wing leader; fakes his death and defects to McGann's pirates.
- Col. John McGann "Specter" (rogue) — Cobras CO who goes rogue in Mission 5; killed at Fort Vanguard (Mission 13).
- Col. Pierre Besson (traitor) — the intelligence mole who leaked Alliance fleet positions; executed by firing squad (Apr 19 2161).
- Ivan Petrov "Chekan / The Butcher" & Nicolai Petrov "Incubus" (Coalition) — brothers who lead the elite Black Guard from the CS Pukov. Nicolai is killed July 11 2161; Ivan survives and flees.
