Redaction

• Drawn shapes are removed, never just hidden. Lines, outlined text, charts and other drawings under a redaction mark are now deleted from the file. A shape that crosses the edge of a mark is removed entirely, and Epdf tells you how many were affected. Before, such shapes could be kept under a clip and recovered from the saved file.
• The self-check now inspects drawings in the saved file and refuses to finish if any geometry is left under a mark.
• Cleaning up history works after further edits. Redacting and then rotating, annotating or locking Fill & sign items no longer skips the offer to remove earlier unredacted copies, and undo can no longer bring back the redacted content after saving.
• Save As shows the right notice: the original file is left unchanged and still contains the unredacted content.
• Failed cleanup is reported. If a copy can't be deleted (for example because another program has it open), Epdf says so and offers to try again.

Saving

• Edits made while a save is running are never marked as saved. Overlapping saves wait for each other.
• Saving keeps a file's permissions. On Windows, a file's own access settings and its "downloaded from the internet" mark are preserved; on macOS and Linux the permission bits and owner are kept. Hard links are kept and read-only files are refused.
• No leftover temporary files after a failed save, and old ones next to a document are cleaned up.
• "Changed on disk" warnings keep working after a save on macOS and Linux, and Epdf checks the file again right before overwriting it.
• Recovery copies of two files whose names differ only in letter case no longer mix on case-sensitive disks.

Privacy and protection

• After you password-protect a file, Epdf offers to remove the earlier unprotected copies from its version history.
• The library leaves no residue: deleted search text is erased from the database, and old thumbnails are deleted from disk.
• AES-256 permissions are checked against their protected copy. A file whose visible permission flags were altered opens view-only.
• Phone upload listens only on real networks, not on VPN or virtual adapters.
• On Windows, helper scripts no longer use PowerShell's Bypass execution policy.
• The Windows uninstaller can optionally delete your Epdf data (history, library index, settings, signatures).

Updating

Epdf 1.1.0 and 1.0.9 find this update through Help > Check for Updates. On a Mac, Epdf opens the download page: quit Epdf, drag the new version into Applications and choose Replace.

New: Epdf for macOS

• One download for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, macOS 13 or later: Epdf-1.1.0-beta.1-universal.dmg. Open it and drag Epdf into Applications. (Epdf-1.1.0-beta.1-universal.zip holds the same app.)
• The same tools as on Windows and Linux: viewing, editing, Fill & sign, redaction, OCR, compare, Office conversion, the library, and Arabic and other right-to-left text, all offline.
• It feels like a Mac app: the Epdf menu, ⌘ shortcuts everywhere, Finder and the Dock open PDFs in Epdf, and closing the last window keeps Epdf running.
• Saved signatures are protected by your Mac's keychain.
• Scan to PDF works with the camera, your phone and scanners. Scanning from scanners uses macOS Image Capture; it has not been tried with a real scanner yet, so please tell us how it works with yours.

Opening Epdf on a Mac the first time

The Mac app is not notarized by Apple yet, so macOS stops it the first time. You allow it once:

1. Drag Epdf into Applications and double-click it. When macOS says it can't open Epdf, click Done.
2. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll down to the message about Epdf and click Open Anyway. Confirm with your password or Touch ID, then click Open Anyway again.

On macOS 14 and earlier you can instead Control-click Epdf in Applications and choose Open.

Epdf asks you to accept the license agreement the first time it starts.

Updates on the Mac

Epdf tells you when a new version is out and opens its download page. It does not update itself on a Mac yet: quit Epdf, then drag the new version into Applications and choose Replace. If macOS asks whether Epdf may use its keychain item, click Always Allow.

• Library: suggested folders with long paths (for example a Google Drive folder) can be added again.

What's new

• Updates now come from the releases of github.com/Mannai/EPDF. Help > Check for Updates reads this page from now on. On a Linux .deb, "Open Download Page" opens the release here.
• The Windows installer has a new look, with Epdf pictures on its welcome, finish and inner pages.
• The license agreement now names Epdf as the licensor (agreement version 1.1). The rest of the terms are unchanged. On Windows the installer shows it before installing; on Linux Epdf asks you to accept it again the next time it starts.

Updating

• 1.0.8 updates itself to 1.0.9: Help > Check for Updates, or wait for the daily check.
• 1.0.7 and older can't update on their own. Install 1.0.9 once from https://epdf.ing; your settings, library and signatures are kept.

New in 1.0.8

• Updates from the public release channel. Epdf now looks for updates on Mannai/epdf-releases. Betas are offered newer betas. As before, nothing is downloaded until you choose Download, the update installs when you close Epdf, and Help > Check for Updates Automatically turns the daily check off.
• Coming from 1.0.7 or earlier? Those versions can't find this update. Install 1.0.8 once from epdf.ing; later updates are then offered inside the app. Your settings, library and saved signatures are kept.
• Linux packages: a .deb and an AppImage, tested on Ubuntu 26.04 (64-bit). The AppImage updates itself like the Windows app. The .deb tells you when a new version is out and opens its download page, so you install it with your package manager. Saved signatures are protected by the desktop keyring (GNOME Keyring or KWallet).
• New contact addresses in the license agreement: support@epdf.ing for help, sales@epdf.ing for commercial licenses. The terms are unchanged.
• Reduce File Size: text in trimmed fonts now looks the same on Linux as on Windows.
• The MSI is now named Epdf-<version>.msi, like the other downloads.

Arabic OCR and in-place Arabic text editing, editable Fill & sign items with a lock-or-keep question on save, smooth dragging, placement previews, Arabic stamps and typed signatures, and only "Open with Epdf" on PDFs in Explorer.
