Filesmith 0.2.2

A brand-new installer, and a small change to how the app opens.

The new setup experience

Installing Filesmith no longer looks like a beige wizard from 2003. Setup is now a frameless window playing a soft video loop with the type set straight on the picture - four screens (welcome, location, install, finish), drawn and hit-tested by hand, ported from Prism's installer kit. (#14, #15)

Under the look, two real fixes:

• Honest progress. The old installer's bar filled up, snapped back, and froze for a minute before finishing - which read as a hang. Files now extract straight into the install folder, so the bar fills exactly once and full means done. Installs complete in about half the time.
• The finish screen offers Run / Start-menu / Desktop choices (and deliberately no "start with Windows" - a file toolkit has no business in your autostart).

Opening the app

Filesmith now always launches into the first tab (Images) instead of wherever you left off - but every category still remembers its own last operation, so Images reopens on Generate if that's where you were, and Video comes back to its remembered sub-page when you switch to it. (#16, #17)

Filesmith 0.2.1

The hardening release: a full-surface review (#12) produced 107 verified findings, and this release lands the fixes (#13) - plus an end-to-end test suite that drives every workflow through the real app.

Highlights

The installer works on clean machines now. 0.2.0 was built but never shipped: its ImageMagick was missing all 140 coder modules, so every image operation failed on any PC without a system ImageMagick. The bundle now carries the modules (and the app points its spawns at them), and the packaged build is smoke-tested end to end. The silent fallback that once snuck a 227 MB ffmpeg into the bundle is gone - this installer is ~80 MB smaller than 0.2.0 with more in it.

Your files are safer.

• Filenames containing % (like 100%off.png) no longer break jobs - or worse, silently overwrite unrelated files (ImageMagick/Ghostscript/mutool printf-expand output paths; everything now routes through a safe temp path).
• Every in-flight job can now actually be cancelled: a Stop button on running rows, cancel in the context menu, and cancellation kills the whole process tree (no more orphaned encoders writing files after you removed the row).
• Deleting an output that's locked keeps its row and tells you, instead of pretending it's gone.

Conversions got correct.

• Video compress no longer aborts at 3 of the 15 scale positions; every audio track is kept, not just the first.
• Embedded cover art rides across audio compression untouched (it used to be re-encoded into a PNG that tripled the file).
• Video-to-GIF uses a proper palette pass (~10x smaller at better fidelity); AVI/WebM get real encoder settings; PNG convert no longer produces its largest file on the default quality; TIFF compression actually compresses.
• HEIC/HEIF and BMP are no longer offered where the result would have been broken or a no-op; SVG rasterizes properly now.

Model registry, hardened. Partial user overrides (the "fix a dead URL in 30 seconds" path) actually work; imported model packs can no longer smuggle install commands; every download is checksum-anchored; interrupted multi-GB downloads resume instead of restarting; quantized GGUF models with large headers are recognized.

Quality of life. Error messages wrap and can be copied; queue rows name their actual operation; the Run button stays pinned on screen; custom generation sizes are reachable; a crash shows a recovery screen instead of a blank window; unsupported GPUs are told why the AI tier is unavailable before a 3 GB download, with a repair path for corrupted installs.

Under the hood

• CI (typecheck, lint, format, 316 unit tests) on every push.
• New Playwright end-to-end suite: 29 tests driving every workflow - all five categories, all seven PDF verbs, AI upscale/background-removal/generation - through the real app against the bundled binaries.

Filesmith v0.1.0

Filesmith is a local desktop file toolkit for Windows. Drop files, pick a tool, get results — with batch queues, thumbnails, live progress, and rich previews. Everything runs on your machine.

Tools

• Images — convert (PNG / WebP / AVIF / JPG…), compress, resize, remove background, upscale, and generate (text-to-image).
• Video / Audio — convert (container / codec) and compress.
• PDF — extract text, PDF → images, compress.
• Documents — convert office documents to PDF.

Your queue and produced files are remembered across restarts.

AI is optional and opt-in

The everyday tools (convert, compress, resize, all PDF/video/audio/document ops) run fully offline from bundled binaries — no AI, no downloads. The AI features (Remove Background, Upscale, Generate) only run when you choose them, and each tells you up front what it needs. Generate drives an existing ComfyUI install and supports SDXL, Flux 1, Flux 2 (klein), Z-Image, and Krea 2 models, downloading any missing text-encoders/VAEs on demand.

Download Filesmith-Setup-x64-0.1.0.exe below and run it. The installer is unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen may warn on first run — click More info → Run anyway. Updates are manual (download the newer installer). No admin rights are needed for the tools.
