Chattering for Android (alpha)
Chattering for Android: alpha. Your Chattering on your phone, from anywhere, over an encrypted link to your own computer.
Install
- Download
Chattering-android.apkbelow on your Android phone and open it. Android asks you to allow installs from your browser, and may warn that the app is unknown: it is not on the Play Store yet. - On your computer: Chattering → Settings → Machines → Add a device.
- Scan the code with the phone's camera. Without the app, the page offers it: the first tap downloads it and copies the code; install it and open it, and it offers to pair (or tap the page's button again). With the app, the code opens in it; the app can also scan codes itself.
Already had an earlier Chattering app on this phone (a test build)? Uninstall it first: this one is signed with the release key, and Android refuses to update across keys.

scripts/build-android.sh).
Not yet in this alpha: downloads and background notifications over the encrypted link (both work with a direct server address); updates are not automatic: come back here for new versions.

| Your computer | Download |
|---|---|

Mac: open the .dmg, drag Chattering onto Applications, and open it from there.
Windows: run the Setup; Chattering opens when it finishes, and is in the Start menu.
The first time you open it
These first downloads are not yet signed by Apple or Microsoft, so each system asks once:
- Mac: a message says Apple could not check Chattering. Click Done, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down to “Chattering was blocked”, click Open Anyway, and confirm. After that it opens normally.
- Windows: “Windows protected your PC” appears. Click More info, then Run anyway.
The command-line install (below) does not ask, and installs the same thing:
- Mac and Linux:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/MaximeRivest/chattering/master/install/install.sh | sh - Windows (PowerShell):
irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/MaximeRivest/chattering/master/install/install.ps1 | iex
Every file's SHA-256 is in SHA256SUMS. Updates: chattering-app update (the previous version is kept: chattering-app rollback). Uninstalling removes the program; your conversations and settings stay.
