Identities

Your identity is what a TeamSpeak server recognizes you by: a key pair whose public half is your Unique ID. Server groups, channel permissions, bans and your contacts on other people's clients are all tied to it, not to your nickname. If you lose the identity, the server sees a brand-new user.

Where it lives

WebSpeak3 keeps identities in your browser's local storage, unencrypted, the same way the native client keeps them in its settings files. That means:

  • Your identity is only in this browser, on this device. Another browser or another device has its own identity.
  • Clearing site data, browser cleanup tools, or a private/incognito window lose it (a private window starts empty and forgets everything when closed).
  • Anyone with access to your browser profile can read and copy it.

Export your identity if you care about it (see below), especially once a server has given you groups or permissions.

Managing identities

Open Tools → Identities.

  • The first identity is created automatically. Its key is generated on your first connection ("Will be generated on next connection" until then).
  • New Identity creates another one, e.g. a separate identity for a different community.
  • Each identity has a name (only shown to you), a nickname and a phonetic nickname. The Unique ID is shown once the key exists.
  • Set as Default picks the identity used for new connections. You can also switch it in the connect dialog under More → Identity.
  • Delete removes an identity permanently. The last one can't be deleted.

Backing up and moving to another browser or device

  1. In Tools → Identities, select the identity and click Export. You get a <name>.ts3identity.json file.
  2. Keep that file somewhere safe. It contains your private key; anyone who has it can connect as you.
  3. In the other browser, open Tools → Identities → Import and pick the file.
  4. Select it and click Set as Default.

The Unique ID stays the same, so servers recognize you as before.

Using your TeamSpeak 3 identity

You can import the identity from the native TeamSpeak 3 client:

  1. In TeamSpeak 3, open Tools → Identities, select your identity and click Export. This saves an .ini file.
  2. In WebSpeak3, open Tools → Identities → Import and pick that .ini file. Name, nickname and phonetic nickname are taken over.
  3. Click Set as Default.

You then have the same Unique ID, groups and permissions as in the native client. Going the other way (WebSpeak3 → native client .ini) isn't supported yet.

FAQ

I lost my server groups after switching browsers / clearing my browser. You're connecting with a new identity. Import a backup if you have one; otherwise ask a server admin to give the new Unique ID its groups again.

Can I use the same identity in two tabs at the same time? Yes, but the server sees two connections with the same Unique ID. Some servers limit or forbid that ("too many clones").

Does the gateway see my identity? Yes. The gateway speaks the TeamSpeak protocol on your behalf, so it needs your private key for the connection. Only use gateways you trust; see the trust model on Configuration & Environment Variables.
