Editing in the world
In version 2, a shape appears in your world as a translucent hologram inside a box. You resize and bend it there, and the blocks update as you go. Version 1 has no editor: you set the shape up in the menu and then place it.
Hold V to open the radial menu. Point at 2D shapes or 3D shapes and let go, then click a shape. You can also press Place in the full menu on G.
The hologram appears at the block you're looking at and stays there. An upright 2D shape faces you. One hologram can be out at a time.
The box has a handle in the middle of each face, on each edge and at each corner. Look at a handle so it lights up, hold the left mouse button and look where it should go.
- A face handle moves along one axis.
- An edge handle moves along two.
- A corner handle moves in the plane facing you. Scroll while dragging to move it along the third axis.
The opposite side of the box stays where it is. Hold sneak to move the opposite side too, so the shape grows about its centre. Box handles move in whole blocks.
Handles show dimmed through terrain, and you can still grab them. While you drag one, the others fade. A box that's only a block or two thick along one axis shows fewer handles, so they don't crowd.
A click only goes to the hologram when a handle is lit. Otherwise it does what it normally does, so you can keep building around a shape.
A Bézier curve or surface has a handle on every control point. Drag them like box handles. A 2D curve's points stay in its plane. A 3D point moves in the plane facing you, with scrolling for the third axis. Dragging a point past the box grows the box.
Points move freely. Turn on Snap in the shape's options to move them in half blocks.
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Right-click a point | Removes it |
| Middle-click a point | Copies it and grabs the copy |
| Insert | Adds a point where you look at the curve, without changing the curve's shape |
| Delete | Removes the point you look at |
On a surface, these add or remove a whole row of points. Hold sneak for a column.
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| Page Up / Page Down | Move the shape away from you or back |
| Home / End | Push out or pull in the side of the box you're facing |
| R | Rotate a quarter turn |
| U | Tip a quarter turn. For a 2D shape, this switches between upright and flat. |
| K | Unlock the shape so it follows your view, or lock it again |
| H | Turn Replace on or off |
| J | Turn Carve on or off |
| Z / Y | Undo or redo an edit |
| Enter | Place the shape |
| Backspace | Cancel |
Six more keys move the shape along one world axis each. They start unbound. You can rebind every key under Options → Controls → Key Binds → Curve Generator.
While the shape is unlocked, its handles hide. Lock it again to get them back.
The move and resize keys act once when you press them. Keep one held and a bar fills. After 3 seconds a box opens where you type a number of blocks. The number replaces the first step, so typing 10 moves exactly 10 blocks. A negative number goes the other way.
The Settings page says how to change the hold time.
With a hologram out, V opens these wedges:
- Shape options has the shape's own settings, such as fill, thickness or the equation. Scroll over a wedge to change its value without leaving the menu. Letting go on a number opens the number box.
- Blocks has a wedge for each piece type. Scroll to switch a type on or off. Letting go opens the block picker for it.
- Presets opens the presets list.
- Export saves a schematic.
- Full menu opens the menu on G.
- Place and Cancel do what Enter and Backspace do.
With no hologram, Last shape brings back the one you last placed or cancelled, where it was.
Press G at any time. The hologram stays where it is, and it takes your changes when you close the menu. The menu has every setting for every shape, including ones the radial menu leaves out, such as an equation's ranges.
A 3D shape's picture can be turned by dragging, moved by right-dragging and zoomed by scrolling. You can drag a Bézier point in it, or type its x, y and z in the list beside it.
Scroll over a number field to change it. In a list of Bézier points, click into the field first, so that scrolling elsewhere still scrolls the list.
The blocks are worked out in the background. The box, handles and outline follow you at once, and the blocks catch up a moment later. For most shapes that takes a few hundredths of a second. A 256-block equation drawn as a surface can take several seconds.
A 3D shape can be up to 256 blocks along each axis.
The hologram draws up to 30,000 blocks. A bigger shape shows only its outline, which you can still edit and place. The Settings page says how to change the limit. Above a million blocks, a warning tells you placing will take a long time.
