Throw balls in the overworld

  • Catch in the overworld: tap R2 to throw your equipped ball in the direction you face. A hit tries to catch the wild monster right there, no battle needed. If it breaks free, it reacts in character: aggressive monsters attack, skittish ones flee. A missed ball lands on the ground for you to pick up. Each ball has its own range, from 3 to 8 tiles.
  • Choose a ball: hold R2 to open the ball wheel, point at a ball and release to equip it. Using a ball from the Bag equips it too.
  • Throw a party member: press L2 + R2 together to open the party wheel and pick a party member. R2 then throws its ball to send it out beside you, and tapping R2 again recalls it, even while walking. Throw it at a wild monster to start a battle where your party member strikes first. Pick a ball on the ball wheel to go back to throwing balls.
  • Hop on: throw a party member that knows SURF, RIDE or FLY and you hop straight onto its back. Where it lands decides the move: water means SURF, ground means RIDE, and FLY takes over when it can't do either (outdoors only). Fish like Seaking can be thrown into water to surf.
  • Wheels: hold L2 for the field-move wheel, R2 for the ball wheel, or both for the party wheel. While a wheel is open, tap the other trigger to step around the ring of wheels. Point with the stick or touch, or step with the D-pad (it skips choices you can't use); release to choose, or release without moving to cancel.
  • New GUIDE pages in the Start menu explain the wheels and throwing. Button names in the game follow whatever you're playing with: touch, controller or keyboard.

Controls and menus

  • Improved Controls gathers the small control tweaks into one option: Select opens the map, in-game instructions name your actual buttons or keys, B jumps to RUN in the battle menu, and B now advances text boxes like A. B still means NO, back and cancel everywhere it did before.
  • Wide-screen menus: on wide screens, side menus sit at the screen edges; on tall screens, menus fit the width and text boxes sit at the bottom.
  • Move details: when a party member learns a new move, compare its type, power and accuracy with the move you'd forget. Press left or right to read each move's effect.
  • Level-up summary: after a battle or catch, one summary replaces the stack of "grew to level" boxes. New moves are still announced.

Saves

  • Browse / manage saves lists your worlds and partial saves. Select old worlds to delete permanently, or export selected worlds to a save ZIP before editing or backing them up.
  • Importing a world that has the same name as one you already have now asks what to do: Replace it, Keep both (the import gets a new name, shown on the button), or Cancel. No more renaming every edited save before you import it.

Smoother, tear-free display

  • No more screen tearing: the display never shows a half-drawn frame. Before, the picture could briefly show part of one frame and part of the next.
  • Steadier motion: each screen refresh now gets exactly one new frame, so walking and scrolling no longer stutter from skipped or doubled frames.

Screen shaders

  • A new Shader setting offers LCD Grid, plus Paper + Grid, Paper + LCD Dots and Paper + CRT Phosphor, which add a paper-like pixel transparency effect. Shaders are off unless you choose one.

Fixes

  • Night brightness: nights are no longer too bright until you first enter a building.
  • Shore edge on dropped items: a beach tile keeps its water edge after you drop an item or a missed ball lands on it.
  • Tall storage box: a two-tile storage box now draws its top in front of a player standing behind it.
  • Missing text characters: characters the game's font lacks no longer freeze menus, and Nidoran's ♂/♀ symbols from mods display properly.
  • Tide pause: removes the short freeze when the tide turns in a large world.
  • Blank player name: starting a new game without typing a name uses your character's name.
  • Battle text boxes now use your graphics mod, like every other text box.
  • Exports: exporting saves, mods or logs over an existing file now replaces it completely. On some devices the old file's leftovers stayed behind and could leave a broken ZIP.
  • Shaders: shaders no longer show a distorted line down the left edge of the screen.
  • The launcher's Mods buttons now come in the same order as the Saves buttons.

Every new patch option is on by default and can be turned off in Settings → Patches. Your existing patch choices are kept.

Install or update

Download PokeWilds-Android-1.1.0-arm64.apk below. Back up your saves with Export saves ZIP in the launcher, then save and quit before installing it over your existing app. It uses the existing signing key, so no uninstall is needed and your worlds and settings are kept.

This release targets ARM64 Android and was tested on the AYANEO Pocket DMG and the Retroid Pocket Flip2. The game remains based on PokeWilds 0.8.11.

Desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux)

The downloads also include pokewilds-patcher-1.1.0.jar, which brings the same patches, with the same defaults, to the desktop game. It needs the official PokeWilds 0.8.11 and Java 17. In the game folder, run java -jar pokewilds-patcher-1.1.0.jar pokewilds.jar, then start the game as usual.

The patcher keeps the original as pokewilds-original.jar.bak. To undo it, close the game and run java -jar pokewilds-patcher-1.1.0.jar --restore pokewilds.jar. Back up your worlds first, especially saves with monsters on overlapping spots on different floors. The desktop README in the downloads lists every option, the keyboard keys and how to update.

Tested on macOS and Linux. Windows hasn't been tested yet, so please report any problems there.

Contributors

Thanks to @Divinakra140 for the original directional sprites, Ho-Oh, egg floor saving and separate floor occupancy patches, and for starting the approach we use to patch the base game, which every patch in this release builds on. Thanks also to @TryTheSauceBoss for the field move wheel, which was also adapted for the party and ball wheels, and shoulder button zoom adjustment.
