OpenFadeR v0.2.5 : Raspberry Pi, Tight SYNC, 40 Fixes and Safer Defaults

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 23 Oct 10:11
4f3be40

This release adds a Raspberry Pi build and cuts memory use. SYNC locks at once and stays within a millisecond of the master. It fixes 40 behaviours found in an audit of the whole app, and changes five defaults so a live mix stays predictable and your own edits are kept.

Raspberry Pi and memory

  • New download for the Raspberry Pi 3, 4, 5 and CM4 (64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, Debian 13 "trixie"). It is built with whole-program optimisation for the Pi's Cortex-A53 core. STEMS separates on the CPU.
  • Memory: each loaded track is kept once, as 16-bit samples, and memory freed after a load goes back to the system. With two 6-minute tracks loaded and playing on the software renderer:
Idle Both playing Peak while loading
0.2.4 74 MB 274 MB 391 MB
0.2.5 73 MB 202 MB 259 MB
  • Release programs are smaller: the symbol table is stripped again.
  • Building on the Pi itself works: ./install.sh builds without the GPU STEMS engine on ARM Linux, and adds the menu entry and the openfader command.
  • On a 1 GB Pi, start it with SLINT_BACKEND=winit-software ./openfader. Set PREFS > VIEW > WAVEFORM > DRAWING RATE to 30 on a Pi 3. See docs/raspberry-pi.md.

SYNC

  • SYNC locks as soon as its jump is heard, and stays within 1 ms of the master. Before, it was 28 to 51 ms off at first, took about 3.5 s to come in, and stayed 3.5 to 4 ms behind.
  • The playing deck now leads the tempo. SYNC on the only playing deck makes it MASTER instead of retuning it to an idle loaded deck. A deck you pin with MASTER is still followed.
  • No phase correction while a deck brakes or spins up, or while the master is scratched or played in reverse. A synced deck without a beat grid gets its tempo fader back.

Beats and loops in time

These actions used to land one audio-output delay late:

  • BEAT JUMP, LOOP MOVE, jog search, the slicer, INSTANT DOUBLES and PLAY on a paused synced deck now keep the beat.
  • LOOP OUT goes on in phase instead of restarting the beat.
  • Loops follow the beat grid exactly: a one-beat loop no longer drifts, and halving then doubling gives the same loop back.

Changed defaults

  • Beat FX tempo source: each unit has a CH / MST / TAP chip.
    • CH, the default, follows the deck on the unit's channel.
    • MST follows the master deck.
    • TAP overrides both.
    • The readout names the source, e.g. CH1 128.00 BPM.
  • Stems keep the EQ: stem mute and solo buttons no longer switch the channel to STEM ISO. In STEM ISO the EQ you set keeps working, and the stem levels apply on top.
  • Reload Tag keeps your edits: text you edited in the app (title, artist, album, genre, label, comment) is kept, and the status line names the kept fields that differ from the file. Reload Tag (discard edits) takes the file's text and can be undone.
  • Soft takeover: a controller knob or fader does nothing until it reaches the value on screen.
    • A message says which way to turn it.
    • It's on by default: PREFERENCES > CONTROLLER > MIDI CONTROLS.

Fixes

  • Transport and cues
    • REVERSE returns to the forward position.
    • The vinyl start ramp applies to PLAY only.
    • A hot cue during the PAUSE brake plays.
    • CUE at the end of a track keeps the cue point.
    • Deleted cues no longer come back.
    • A hot cue with a loop acts as a loop.
  • Mixer and effects
    • AUTO GAIN no longer boosts past a track's peak. Saved gains are measured again once.
    • Echo tails keep their tempo when the last deck pauses.
    • LEVEL, HP MIX and effect switches no longer click.
    • DRUM RELEASE FX works with an unused Beat FX on the deck.
  • Library
    • KEY sorts in Camelot order.
    • Search matches every word across title, artist, genre, comment and key, ignoring accents.
    • Auto Relocate by name never takes over another track's file.
    • Cue and grid edits of a track loaded on two decks no longer overwrite each other.
    • ./ and ../ playlist paths no longer create duplicates.
    • Undo of Remove from Collection restores the track's plays.
  • Sampler, BEAT LAB, MIDI, AUTOMIX
    • BEAT LAB swaps on the beat without a gap.
    • The sequencer no longer fires every hit at once when its pattern is shortened.
    • Sampler pads follow bank switches.
    • Widening to 4 decks reads the controller's current knob and fader positions for decks C and D.
    • AUTOMIX re-plans when a track's analysis arrives, and SKIP works without a plan.

Stability and testing

  • Continuous integration (build, tests and a packaged-app start) passes on Linux, Windows and macOS.
  • SYNC and BEAT JUMP were measured from a recording of the audio output with a 120 ms output latency.
  • The new controls were checked in the running app.
  • The new texts are translated into all seven languages.

Downloads

Each archive includes the application, themes, controller mappings and plugins.

Windows (x86_64): openfader-0.2.5-windows-x86_64.zip. Extract it and run openfader.exe. The app is not code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn: "More info" > "Run anyway".

Linux (x86_64): openfader-0.2.5-linux-x86_64.tar.gz. Extract it and run ./openfader. It needs the usual desktop libraries (ALSA, X11 or Wayland, fontconfig). Install zenity or kdialog for the file chooser.

Raspberry Pi 3, 4, 5 and CM4 (aarch64): openfader-0.2.5-linux-aarch64-pi.tar.gz. It needs 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS based on Debian 13 ("trixie"). Extract it and run ./openfader-0.2.5-linux-aarch64-pi/openfader.

macOS (Apple silicon): OpenFadeR-0.2.5-macos-arm64.zip holds OpenFadeR.app. It is not signed or notarized: move it to Applications, then right-click > Open once and confirm. If macOS says it is damaged, run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/OpenFadeR.app.

Optional: ffmpeg on the PATH for video, and python 3 for the Python plugins.

OpenFadeR v0.2.4 : Seven Languages for the App and its Extensions

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 22 Oct 17:54
039e2a4

This release makes OpenFadeR and its bundled extensions available in seven languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian and Dutch.

Languages

  • New setting PREFERENCES > VIEW > LANGUAGE: SYSTEM (the default) or one of the seven languages, each listed in its own language.
  • SYSTEM follows the computer's language when it is one of the seven, and English otherwise.
  • A change applies at once, including the plugin manager, the Plugins menu, the File menu entries and the browser tree.
  • Menus, settings, dialogs, tooltips, status messages and the track browser are translated: 2257 texts per language.
  • Labels that match DJ hardware stay in English in every language: CUE, SYNC, MASTER, LOOP, BEAT FX, KEY and similar.
  • Labels on fixed-width buttons were measured with the interface font and shortened where they would have been cut.

Extensions

  • The bundled plugins are translated too: descriptions, settings, Plugins menu entries, error and status messages, and the rekordbox-device pages under PREFERENCES > DJ SYSTEM (player settings keep their hardware names).
  • The bundled themes carry translated descriptions.
  • A plugin translates itself with locales/<language>.json in its folder: English text to translation, with {} for values filled in at run time. A theme does the same with a "locales" entry in its file. Every request to a plugin also carries the language as "lang". See docs/plugins.md and docs/skins.md.
  • Effect, knob mode and pad mode names stay in English, like the app's own DJ labels.

Fixes

  • In every language other than English, the jog wheel arcs and the knob arcs did not draw: the numbers in their drawings were written with a decimal comma. They now draw in every language.
  • The BPM filter fields of the browser accept a decimal comma.

For Contributors

  • Every shown text is marked: @tr("…") in the .slint files and tr!("…") in the app's Rust code; a text that comes from an extension goes through the extension's own translations instead.
  • python3 ui/translations/extract.py collects new texts and adds them to each language's file in ui/translations/<language>/LC_MESSAGES/openfader-ui.po, where they show in English until translated.
  • A test reports every text a language is missing and every translation whose placeholders differ from the English.
  • Corrections from native speakers are welcome as pull requests, on the app's .po files and on the extensions' locales files.

Stability & Testing

  • Continuous integration (build, tests and a packaged-app start) passes on Linux, Windows and macOS for every change in this release.
  • The app was run in each language; the main window, the preferences, the welcome window, the plugin manager, the Plugins menu and the DJ SYSTEM pages were checked, including a live switch from French to German.

OpenFadeR v0.2.3 : Beat Grid Fixes, Deck Display Improvements & MIDI Clock Output

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 22 Oct 13:46
2e46e8c

This release makes beat grids line up on dance music, makes memory cues and beat-jump pads easier to read, adds settings for the tempo fader direction, and adds a MIDI clock output for syncing external gear.

A special thank-you to @andrewdesena for contributing the MIDI clock output, and to @efficientcommunication-png for the reports behind most of the other changes.

Waveforms, Beat Grids & Analysis

  • Beats now follow the kick. On sidechain-pumped dance tracks the grid could sit half a beat off, on the off-beat. On 5 full-length 128 BPM tracks, 97–100% of beats now land within 70 ms of a reference beat tracker (only 1 of the 5 was on the beat before).
  • Improved detection of beat "1" of the bar: it also uses where the sound changes and where the music starts. Bar positions match the reference on 96–100% of beats on those 5 tracks. On the Ballroom clip set (297 clips in 4/4), accuracy went from 60% to about 64%.
  • Phrases follow a corrected grid right away after GRID edits, unless they were edited by hand.
  • When the grid comes from a connected library, the status line says so. PREFERENCES > ANALYSIS > BEAT GRID FROM > OPENFADER ANALYSIS shows OpenFadeR's grid instead.
  • Every track is analysed again once with the new detector. Grids you corrected yourself are kept.

Decks & Controllers

  • Memory cues are drawn as a solid bar with an "M" flag, above the beat grid, and grow with HOT CUE MARKERS > LARGE.
  • PREFERENCES > VIEW > "Tempo fader: + at the bottom" reverses the on-screen tempo fader.
  • PREFERENCES > CONTROLLER > "Invert hardware tempo fader" replaces the OPENFADER_TEMPO_INVERT environment variable.
  • BEAT JUMP pads are paired (-1/+1, -2/+2, -4/+4, -8/+8), minus in light red and plus in light green. Controller pad mappings are unchanged.

MIDI Clock Output

  • New setting PREFERENCES > CONTROLLER > MIDI CLOCK OUT: name an output port and it receives a 24 PPQN MIDI clock locked to the playing master deck's beat grid.
  • START is sent on the deck's next bar line and STOP when no deck plays. A deck without a beat grid, or one previewing its cue, sends no clock.
  • Nudges, pitch bends, tempo changes and a change of master deck are followed. Beat jumps are caught up gradually rather than with a burst of pulses.
  • Measured in the app with a 124 BPM track: 124.03 BPM, with 0.15 ms jitter (standard deviation).

Stability & Testing

  • Continuous integration (build, tests and a packaged-app start) passes on Linux, Windows and macOS for every change in this release.

The v0.2.3 GitHub Actions release workflow completed successfully for Linux, Windows and macOS Apple silicon.

OpenFadeR 0.2.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 19 Oct 08:39

This update fixes the tempo readout and adds options to make beat grids and hotcue flags easier to see. Thanks to @efficientcommunication-png for reporting both issues.

Fixes

  • Fixed the tempo display showing 126.100 instead of 127.00 near a whole BPM. It now reads 126.99 → 127.00 → 127.01 correctly on normal and compact decks. Playback speed was not affected. #1
  • Restored the missing A and F letters on waveform hotcue flags.

Clearer waveforms

Open Preferences > View > Waveform for two new settings:

  • Beat Grid: Bold draws thicker, outlined grid lines over the waveform. Downbeats are wider than the other beats, so colour is not the only way to tell them apart.
  • Hot Cue Markers: Large doubles the size of hotcue flags and their letters on deck waveforms and browser previews when preview cue markers are enabled.

Both settings apply immediately and are saved between sessions. Normal remains the default. These changes address #2.

Regression coverage

Added a test that renders the actual tempo display at normal and compact sizes and checks thousands of rounding boundaries, including the reported 126.100 case. The test fails with the old formatting code and passes with this fix.

Downloads

  • Linux x86_64: unpack openfader-0.2.1-linux-x86_64.tar.gz and run ./openfader. Requires the usual desktop libraries (ALSA, X11 or Wayland, fontconfig). Install zenity or kdialog for the file chooser.
  • macOS Apple silicon: unzip OpenFadeR-0.2.1-macos-arm64.zip and move OpenFadeR.app to Applications. It is not developer-signed or notarized. Right-click > Open and confirm. If macOS says it is damaged, run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/OpenFadeR.app.

Optional: ffmpeg on PATH for video and Python 3 for Python plugins. Audio-page system volume sliders are available on Linux only; on Windows and macOS, use the system volume controls.

The visibility changes have been checked in horizontal and vertical layouts on Linux, but not on a Raspberry Pi or a physical 7-inch screen. This release does not include a Raspberry Pi build.

OpenFadeR 0.2.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 00:23

What's new

Welcome window. The first time you start OpenFadeR, a short welcome shows the extensions we suggest (rekordbox libraries, devices, effects and pad modes). Switch on the ones you want with one click. Nothing is switched on unless you choose it.

STEMS made easy. The STEMS model now has its own card with a download button, so you no longer need to fetch it by hand.

Update check. At start, OpenFadeR asks GitHub whether a newer version exists. If one does, it tells you and gives you a download button. You can say "later" and keep mixing. Nothing is installed without you.

Faster plugins. Plugins can now stay running between requests ("persistent": true in plugin.json) instead of starting fresh every time. Useful for plugins that load something big once. Details in docs/plugins.md.

Also new since 0.1.0

  • USB sticks: one stick can hold several library formats, cue points stay in sync, and a new DEVICES tab lets you choose what each stick is for. Each connected stick gets its own icon.
  • Stems: the stem buttons switch a stem off and back on, and turning a stem knob up brings back a stem you silenced.
  • Help > About shows the version and links. The app now has its own icon on every system.
  • Plugins: you can uninstall a plugin from its card. Bundled plugins start switched off; plugins you already had on stay on.
  • VIDEO and LIGHTING are marked beta and are off by default. Turn them on in Preferences.
  • Many small layout fixes: tidier FX panel, readable mixer knobs, settings hints next to their controls, and empty lists tell you which plugin they need.
  • An HDMI output with nothing plugged in is no longer picked to play into silence.

Fixes

Windows

  • The app would not start on some PCs. The 0.1.0 Windows download was missing two Microsoft runtime files (msvcp140_1.dll, msvcp140_atomic_wait.dll). On a PC without the Visual C++ runtime, nothing happened when you opened it. Both files are now included.
  • No more black console windows. Using a plugin (for example a yt-dlp download) used to open a terminal window, and closing it stopped the download. Plugins now run hidden.
  • Python plugins find Python. OpenFadeR now uses the py launcher that the official Python installer adds, so plugins work even when python is not on your PATH.

yt-dlp extension (works with winget install -e --id yt-dlp.yt-dlp, which also installs ffmpeg)

  • "error 100" is gone. yt-dlp reports code 100 when its own update check fails, even though the download worked. The extension now treats that as success.
  • Titles and searches in any language. Japanese, accented and other non-English titles failed on Windows. They now import correctly.
  • Finds yt-dlp and ffmpeg right after installing them, without restarting Windows or the app.
  • Clearer errors. When something really fails, you now see yt-dlp's own error message instead of "no message".

All systems

  • No leftover processes. When OpenFadeR closes, every plugin it started closes too, including when the app is force-closed. (On Linux and macOS, a program that a plugin itself starts can survive if the app is killed with kill -9.)

Full Changelog: https://github.com/OpenRsG/OpenFadeR/commits/v0.1.0

First pre-release. On Windows and macOS the build, the tests and the app start were checked on CI machines. Those machines have no sound card, no MIDI controller and no USB stick, so sound output, controllers and USB eject on Windows and macOS have not been tried on real hardware yet. Please open an issue if something does not work. There is no Intel Mac build yet.
