Highlights

Passkeys

Sign in with your fingerprint, face, screen lock or a security key instead of a password.

  • Adding one: Settings → My Account → Passkeys, after confirming your password (and your two-factor code if 2FA is on). Parley emails you whenever a passkey is added.
  • Signing in: the login page has a Sign in with a passkey button, and supporting browsers suggest your passkey right in the username field. A passkey covers both the password and the second factor, and your password keeps working.
  • Security keys: type your username first and keys that don't store a passkey still work.
  • Where they work: passkeys are tied to the address in APP_URL, so that must be a domain name. They work in browsers and the Windows app. The macOS, Linux and Android apps keep using passwords.

Mail in the Admin Console

A new Mail page lists the last 200 emails the server tried to send and what happened to each: sent, failed (with the error), logged or switched off. You can filter by recipient and open any email to read it. Pair it with your mail provider's activity log to follow delivery.

Project

  • License: Parley is now open source under the Apache License 2.0. See LICENSE and NOTICE.
  • Website: Parley has a website at runparley.com. Its source is in website/.

Upgrading

Pull parleydev/parley:v0.4.0 and parleydev/frontend:v0.4.0 (or set PARLEY_IMAGE_TAG=v0.4.0) and restart. One new database migration (passkeys) runs automatically on start. For passkeys, make sure APP_URL is the public HTTPS address people use.

Fixes

Channel drag and drop

Reordering channels and moving them into and out of categories now does what you expect:

  • No double save: a drop used to be saved twice, once in the spot you chose and once at the end of the group, so channels often landed somewhere else.
  • One drop point: the whole channel list now works out a single drop point from the pointer: between channels, at the end of a group, or into a category when you hover its header.
  • One indicator: a single line shows where the channel will land. It no longer flickers between rows and group outlines.
  • No-op drops: dropping without changing anything no longer saves.
  • Categories: they can be dragged before or after one another.

Windows desktop app

Drag and drop now works in the Windows app, including reordering channels and servers and dropping files onto the message box. The app's built-in file-drop handling was intercepting every drag before the page saw it. Install this release's Windows build to get the fix.

Project

CI and Docker image publishing now run only when code changes, or when started by hand from the Actions tab. Release tags still always publish images.

Upgrading

Pull parleydev/parley:v0.3.1 and parleydev/frontend:v0.3.1 (or set PARLEY_IMAGE_TAG=v0.3.1) and restart. There are no database migrations. Reload the web app (or the desktop app) to pick up the channel drag fixes.

Highlights

Redesigned call controls

Voice channels, stages, studios and DM calls share a new control bar: grouped mic and camera controls with menus, screen share, soundboard and a "…" menu, and a separate hang-up button.

  • Mic menu: input and output device, input profile (Voice Isolation / Studio / Custom), input and output volume, a live input level meter, Deafen and Voice Settings.
  • Camera menu: camera device, a live preview and Video Settings.
  • More menu: Grid View, Show My Own Camera and Show Non-Video Participants.

Join screens for voice, stage and studio channels

Before you join, a channel shows who is in it, how many are listening on a stage, whether a studio session is recording, and a single Join Voice button.

Unread DMs and pings in the server bar

  • Each unread DM appears under Home with its unread message count and disappears once read.
  • Servers show a count of the messages that mention you, and closed folders show the total for their servers.

Layout

  • Resizable sidebar: drag the channel sidebar's edge on desktop to resize it (224–450 px). The width is remembered.
  • Friends: the Friends view fills the window.

Fixes

  • Studio stereo: stereo now stays stereo in live calls. It was being received as mono.
  • Studio mute: muting, deafening or being server-muted now silences your recorded studio track.
  • Android: the system navigation bar no longer covers the message box and controls.
  • Inbox: the Inbox panel is no longer cut off in the Friends header.
  • Rate limits: with JWT_SECRET_FILE, per-user rate limits are applied per user again instead of per IP.

Self-hosting

New guides in docs/self-hosting:

  • an image-only compose.yaml with production defaults
  • step-by-step setup for Linux, Raspberry Pi, Windows, macOS, Proxmox, Synology, Unraid, TrueNAS SCALE and Portainer
  • remote access through Tailscale, Cloudflare Tunnel, Caddy, Nginx Proxy Manager, Traefik or Let's Encrypt

Upgrading

Pull parleydev/parley:v0.3.0 and parleydev/frontend:v0.3.0 (or set PARLEY_IMAGE_TAG=v0.3.0) and restart. There are no new database migrations. Clients pick up the new web app on reload.
