Flashback 0.8.0

Profiles and friends for Flashback Cloud, automatic uploads, montages, editable audio tracks for everyone, and clean, in-sync sound in every clip.

  • Flashback Cloud adds profiles, friends, a feed, visibility choices, and signing in on flashbk.gg. Each one opens from the Cloud server when it's ready, starting in the United States; until then, Cloud works as it did in 0.7.41. Before you use them, Cloud asks you to accept its updated Terms, Privacy Policy, and Acceptable Use policy.
  • Pick a @username to make a profile, with a display name, a short bio, and your sign-in picture or none. Nothing is published until you save it. Your profile's address is flashbk.gg/u/, and flashbk.gg/ is a short link to it.
  • Your profile is shown to your friends. Adults can open it to anyone signed in to Flashback, or to everyone once public clips open; for ages 13 to 17 it is always friends-only. Accounts made before 0.8 are asked for a date of birth once. Cloud keeps only the age band, and for ages 13 to 17 the year you turn 18, never the date.
  • Add friends by @username. Requests can be accepted, declined, or blocked and reported. Declining is silent, and a block is never revealed to the person you blocked.
  • The Feed shows your friends' clips. React to them: others see how many reactions a clip has, not who added them, and you can turn reactions off on any of your clips. Clips that show who shared them also show their views.
  • Pin your best clips to your profile, gather clips into collections, and search your friends' clips by title, game, or tag.
  • Watch clips on flashbk.gg or in Flashback's own player. If a clip can't play in the app, Flashback opens its page on flashbk.gg instead. Copy the link to a friend's clip when anyone with the link can watch it. Profiles, clip pages, and your account pages on flashbk.gg work on phones, and profiles load quickly there.
  • Sign in on flashbk.gg to manage your clips, profile, and friends from a browser, download your data, or sign out everywhere, the app included. The site uses only essential sign-in cookies, with no analytics or advertising cookies.
  • Every upload has a visibility: Only me, Friends, Anyone with the link, or Public on my profile. Once Cloud takes visibility choices, new uploads start as Only me, and the upload dialog lets you choose who can see the clip, name it, and tag it. Clips uploaded before 0.8 stay Anyone with the link.
  • Only me and Friends clips are kept off the public web and play only through short-lived links checked for each viewer. Get a new link turns the old link off.
  • The Cloud tab is redesigned. It scrolls from anywhere and has My clips and Account sections, joined by Feed and Friends once profiles open, with a strip that shows your storage, clips, uploads, and plan. Each limit has an (i) that explains how Cloud counts it.
  • My clips manages everything you've uploaded: search, sort, and filter by game, visibility, type, and date, in a list or a grid with each clip's poster, or its Library thumbnail while the poster loads. Click a poster, or double-click a clip, to open it on flashbk.gg, or to play it in Flashback's player when it has no page there you can open, and once Cloud takes visibility choices, click a clip's visibility to change it, from the list or the player. A clip whose visibility can't change right now says why when you click it, and what to do. Download your clips back to your PC, one at a time or several into a folder, with progress and Stop in My clips. A clip uploaded without a game takes the game of its copy in your Library. Change who can see many clips at once, or every clip from one game, and Flashback tells you which ones stayed as they were and why. Delete several at a time. Ctrl+A, Delete, F2, Enter, Esc, and Shift-click work as you'd expect.
  • Changing who can see clips, making new links, and downloading your data each have a daily limit per account, set well above everyday use; past it, Cloud asks you to try again tomorrow. Views from signed-in viewers stop counting on a clip after a daily limit, so throwaway accounts can't inflate them; the clip still opens.
  • Account shows your plan and usage, the upload queue, upload settings, your data export, and account deletion. Billing, plans, and Export stay available while an upload runs.
  • Subscribers can change plans right from the plan cards with Upgrade to and Switch to. A larger plan starts at once and you pay only the prorated difference for the rest of the billing period; if that payment doesn't go through, your plan stays as it was. A smaller plan also starts at once, and the unused time is credited to your next bill. Flashback shows what happens and the new plan's renewal terms before you confirm, and offers a smaller plan only when your cloud clips fit in it.
  • Deleting your Cloud account first shows what is deleted and what is kept, then asks you to type your @username, or DELETE if you have no profile. It cancels any paid plan (the current period isn't refunded), signs you out everywhere, deletes an uploaded profile picture, and takes your clips and profile off the web at once; seven days later, everything it listed as deleted is gone for good. Sign in again before then and choose Keep my account to put your clips and profile back, or Start a new account. A cancelled plan stays cancelled, and nothing on your PC is touched.
  • Automatic uploads for the games you choose. They're off by default. Uploads wait until you stop playing, meaning no game in front for two minutes, and pause if a game comes back. Choose Right away to upload while you play under an upload limit, 4 Mbit/s unless you change it; a clip that needs converting still waits until you stop playing.
  • Say "Flashback upload" or "Flashback upload that" to save a replay and upload it, with its clip link copied when the upload finishes. It works when Voice Controls are on and Voice upload is turned on in the Cloud tab.
  • Upload settings live in the Cloud tab. Each change is saved as you make it, leaves other unapplied settings alone, and never restarts capture. Uploads run one at a time in the background, carry on after Flashback restarts, and retry after a dropped connection. If your plan or storage can't take a clip, the queue pauses with one notice a day.
  • Captures with a copy on Cloud show an uploaded badge in the Library. Cloud clip dates follow your local calendar, so a clip uploaded in the evening no longer shows the next day's date, and Cloud confirmations appear in the window while it's open instead of in the tray.
  • Make montages. Select videos in the Library and choose Make montage, or add clips in the Editor's new Montage mode from the library picker or a file. Reorder, trim, and preview each clip and export them as one video: 2 to 20 clips, up to 30 minutes, at 1080p, 720p, or the first clip's size up to 1440p, and 30 or 60 FPS. A montage of one game's clips is saved in that game's folder and a mix of games in a Montages folder, your originals stay untouched, and a saved montage can be uploaded to Cloud like any clip.
  • Montages can have music. Add a song (MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG, or Opus), set its volume, where in the song it starts, and its own fade in and out, and choose whether a shorter song loops or plays once and fades out. Each clip's sound has its own volume and mute, the montage can fade in from black and out to black, and clips can crossfade by 0.2, 0.5, or 1 second. A montage with music keeps three audio tracks, the mix, the clips' sound, and the music, so you can remix it later. Drag clips to reorder them, or press Alt+Up and Alt+Down.
  • Tag your captures from their menu. Tags show on cards, every word you type in Library search matches names, games, and tags, and #tag shows only captures with that tag. Tags stay on this PC unless you upload the capture to Flashback Cloud.
  • Discord copies match Discord's current upload limits: 20 MB free, 50 MB Nitro Basic (and Level 2 boosted servers), 100 MB in a Level 3 boosted server, and 1 GB Nitro. Copies stay a little under the limit, and a bitrate cap keeps short trims for the larger limits from coming out bloated or asking for more free disk space than they need. A clip that is only just under its limit is now made smaller too, instead of being copied as is. The upload limit and format pickers no longer cut off their labels.
  • Point at a thumbnail in the Library or in Recent clips to play the clip with one click. Clip cards put Play before Edit, Edit always opens the clip in Trim, and Recent clips cards have Edit clip and the Library's More menu.
  • The Editor opens clips straight from the Library. Choose from library and From library open a picker with search, a game filter, your newest clips up front, thumbnails, lengths, and dates. Open file is still there.
  • Library dates show the year for clips from other years and follow the 12- or 24-hour clock you use in Windows. Captures are dated by when they were recorded: a copied or moved clip folder no longer shows every clip as made today, a replay is dated by when you pressed save, trims and Discord copies keep their source's time, and File Explorer shows the recording time as Media created.
  • Flashback follows time zone changes while it runs, in the tray too, so clip names, folders, and Library times use the new zone without a restart.
  • Fixed the static heard on voice in clips since 0.7.22. Flashback was cutting clean speech from USB audio interfaces and virtual cables into tiny gaps many times a second; it now writes captured audio back to back and only uses timestamps for real gaps. Existing clips can't be repaired; new recordings are clean.
  • Editable audio tracks are on by default, for new installs and for settings that already record game and desktop audio, and they no longer need "Include my microphone". Clips get a "Flashback mix" track that every player plays, a "Game and desktop" track, and a "Microphone" track when your microphone is on. You can still turn them off in Settings.
  • The mixed track plays the game and your voice at full level, the way the single mixed track always has, and turns down only the moments where the two together would clip, instead of distorting. Turning the microphone on or off no longer changes how loud the game is.
  • Replays saved from several buffer segments join their editable tracks sample for sample, so joins no longer repeat or skip a few milliseconds of sound, and the microphone and game tracks stay together and on the picture's timing through a long replay. With editable tracks off, joins lose less sound and fade smoothly instead of clicking.
  • Microphones that Windows converts to another sample rate no longer click when the device reports a packet late, and stopping a capture keeps its last moment of sound instead of padding it with silence. If your microphone keeps dropping audio on its own, Flashback tells you, and an audio troubleshooting guide now comes with the app.
  • Choose which device to record under Record audio from: the Windows default output or any playback device. App exclusions work on the chosen device, and device lists refresh each time you open them, so a headset plugged in later can be picked without restarting. With editable tracks, switching or unplugging the Windows default headset or speakers while recording moves the replay to the device Windows uses now within a couple of seconds, and keeps the replay history from before the switch.
  • If the chosen output or microphone goes missing, capture uses the default output or leaves the microphone out, with a note in Settings and on the status. When it comes back, Flashback switches back once no game is in front, so turning a headset back on mid-match no longer empties the replay buffer. A device that goes away still switches at once. A chosen device that's unplugged stays selected, shown by name as not connected, and choosing a device in one audio picker no longer blanks the others.
  • Saved clips start on a keyframe, so Windows players and the Editor preview show picture and sound in sync. Before, the picture could run slightly behind the sound. Clips saved before 0.8 play in sync in the Editor.
  • Fixed a crash on AMD graphics when the replay buffer moved on to a new segment.
  • If the recorder stops unexpectedly while a clip is saving, Flashback recovers the footage it already recorded instead of failing the save, and if that clip ends before you pressed save, the notice says how far before. When the recorder restarts to recover resources, it keeps the footage recorded so far, and a save pressed meanwhile waits for it instead of failing with "did not finish in time".
  • Settings you apply while Flashback is still starting are kept. Before, startup could undo a voice control change and run storage cleanup with the old limit.
  • Game profiles have a list and an editor. Every saved profile shows with an on/off switch, a summary of what it changes, and edit and remove buttons. Add game or app makes a profile for any program: pick it from your open apps, browse to its .exe, or type its name. A profile can cover several programs and sets quality, replay length, game audio, microphone, and the mouse pointer. The Per-game profiles box says which game is in front, describes its profile in the same words as the list, and shows PAUSED while game detection is off.
  • A quick look at another game no longer switches profiles and discards the replay buffer: the switch happens after the usual grace period, or at once if the previous game has closed. A profiled browser, launcher, or chat app never takes over from a game that's still running, so alt-tabbing to it keeps the game's replay buffer.
  • Clip naming has presets and folder layouts (by game, by game then month, by month, or one folder), a live preview of the exact file name and folder, plain-language checks, and a picker for custom patterns. Renaming catches a name another capture in the folder already uses. The naming card says plainly which games are named on their own (well-known games and games in a store's install folder) and points to per-game profiles for the rest, and pattern and rule errors say what to type.
  • Shortcut fields show each key as a keycap, with a reset button. Click one to set a new shortcut; Esc cancels, problems are explained in place, and switching to a game stops listening so your shortcuts keep working. Flashback's own shortcuts pause while you set one, so the replay and screenshot shortcuts can be swapped, and Print Screen combinations work.
  • Ghost Mode has an item in the tray menu to turn it on and off. While it's on, the tray tooltip still says whether the replay buffer is active, paused, or needs attention, without naming the game, and Settings lists what Ghost Mode turns off and what keeps working.
  • Overlay changes apply without restarting the replay buffer, and Apply overlay saves only the overlay. The preview matches the exported clip, with the same key sizes, colors, and placement: ultrawide and multi-display clips no longer stretch the keyboard and mouse, Lower right reaches the corner, there's a new Upper right layout, and the opacity slider changes the preview too. The overlay listens only to the keyboard or mouse it shows, and a very long clip keeps the presses from the moment you saved.
  • Pages open instantly the first time you visit them and settle in with a short fade, skipped when Windows animation effects are off. Returning to the Library or Replay no longer flashes placeholder thumbnails.
  • On Windows 11 the window has properly rounded corners, with the outline drawn on the rounded edge at every display scale, and Appearance has an outline opacity slider. The screenshot editor is rounded the same way. The Replay tab folds Saving to into its status card.
  • Buttons on the Daylight theme show white text again, and long choices in a closed picker end with an ellipsis instead of being cut mid-word. Settings > App updates has a Join the Flashback Discord button, and the Discord status setting says who can see your status and that it includes a Get Flashback link.
  • Setup is a single step with a real install screen and progress. The Visual C++ runtime the recorder needs now ships with Flashback, so there's no separate install with its own window, download, and administrator prompt, and the window opens on "Starting the replay buffer" right away.
  • Flashback runs on .NET 10, which comes inside the app, and ships its own trimmed FFmpeg build with only the parts it uses, so the download is smaller. That FFmpeg build is licensed under the LGPL, and its complete source is published on Flashback's releases page.
  • Updates stay calm through ordinary interruptions. Being offline shows a quiet "will try again later", a newer release published during a download is offered instead of failing, an interrupted download offers to resume and keeps going in the tray, a damaged partial download starts over once by itself, and losing the connection just before installing keeps the verified download. Restarting for an update while an upload or export runs asks first.
  • Settings > Diagnostics shows the newest log entries before you share them, with capture, game, and audio device names, your Windows user and computer names, personal folders, and email and network addresses replaced, and copies or saves only what you reviewed. Editor log lines no longer record clip file names.
  • An old .NET data format that could be abused to run code is switched off throughout the app, Copy buttons copy plain text only, Cloud pictures load only from Cloud's own media addresses without cookies or redirects, and links Flashback opens are checked against an exact list of trusted sites. Clip titles and game names on Cloud drop invisible characters that could make them read differently from what is stored.

Your clips, shortcuts, settings, and Cloud links are kept, and Flashback keeps a copy of your settings that 0.7.41 can read, in case you ever go back. Editable audio tracks turn on for settings that record game and desktop audio; recording quality and frame-rate settings are unchanged.

Flashback 0.7.40 and earlier can't install this update by themselves: they offer the installer instead. Run it over your current install; your settings and clips are kept.
