Flashback 0.8.2

Clips stay in sync during long sessions, editable audio tracks stay on, and Flashback can keep itself up to date.

  • Sound stays in sync with the picture however long Flashback has been recording. Before, after a few hours of play with editable audio tracks on, saved clips could play the sound up to about a second early, because each replay segment was timed by adding up encoded video lengths, which can run slightly past the clock. Flashback now places every segment's sound against when that segment really started, so clips saved late in a session line up as well as the first ones.
  • The keystroke overlay lines up with the picture in long sessions too. Keys no longer show up early, and the last presses before you save are no longer left out.
  • Editable audio tracks no longer turn off for the rest of the session when Windows reports one audio timestamp it can't stand behind, or when Discord or your browser opens or closes a sound just as recording starts. Flashback skips that one timestamp or tries again, and keeps the separate game and microphone tracks.
  • Flashback now checks for updates when it starts and every 3 hours, also while it runs in the tray, and tells you when a new version is out. Click the notice to open Flashback and update.
  • New: Install updates automatically, in Settings under App updates. Flashback then downloads a new version while no game is running and installs it when your PC is free, with no game or full-screen app open. It restarts in the tray and starts the replay buffer again by itself, so it keeps recording. It's off unless you turn it on.

Your clips, shortcuts, settings, and Cloud links are kept.

Immutable release. Only release title and notes can be modified.

Flashback 0.8.1

Page Up and Page Down as shortcuts on their own, the new icon on every Flashback shortcut after an update, and installing over a copy from before 0.6.58 now replaces it.

  • Page Up and Page Down can be the replay or screenshot shortcut on their own, like the F keys, number pad keys, and Insert. While one is set, the shortcut field reminds you that the key won't reach other apps while Flashback is running.
  • Flashback shows its new icon in the taskbar, the Start menu, and on desktop shortcuts. Some PCs kept showing the old F after updating to 0.7.41 or 0.8.0; Flashback now fixes its own shortcuts each time it starts, so the new icon appears once it opens after the update.
  • Installing Flashback on a PC that still has a copy from before 0.6.58 now replaces that copy. Before, the old copy kept starting with Windows, and opening the new one, or choosing Repair in setup, just brought the old window back. The new copy now closes the old one, removes it, and takes over its shortcuts and Start with Windows, and tells you once that it did. Your clips and settings stay where they are.

Your clips, shortcuts, settings, and Cloud links are kept.

Flashback 0.8.0

@Riqqqque Riqqqque released this 04 Oct 04:54
Immutable release. Only release title and notes can be modified.

Flashback 0.8.0

Profiles and friends for Flashback Cloud, automatic uploads, montages, editable audio tracks for everyone, and clean, in-sync sound in every clip.

  • Flashback Cloud adds profiles, friends, a feed, visibility choices, and signing in on flashbk.gg. Each one opens from the Cloud server when it's ready, starting in the United States; until then, Cloud works as it did in 0.7.41. Before you use them, Cloud asks you to accept its updated Terms, Privacy Policy, and Acceptable Use policy.
  • Pick a @username to make a profile, with a display name, a short bio, and your sign-in picture or none. Nothing is published until you save it. Your profile's address is flashbk.gg/u/, and flashbk.gg/ is a short link to it.
  • Your profile is shown to your friends. Adults can open it to anyone signed in to Flashback, or to everyone once public clips open; for ages 13 to 17 it is always friends-only. Accounts made before 0.8 are asked for a date of birth once. Cloud keeps only the age band, and for ages 13 to 17 the year you turn 18, never the date.
  • Add friends by @username. Requests can be accepted, declined, or blocked and reported. Declining is silent, and a block is never revealed to the person you blocked.
  • The Feed shows your friends' clips. React to them: others see how many reactions a clip has, not who added them, and you can turn reactions off on any of your clips. Clips that show who shared them also show their views.
  • Pin your best clips to your profile, gather clips into collections, and search your friends' clips by title, game, or tag.
  • Watch clips on flashbk.gg or in Flashback's own player. If a clip can't play in the app, Flashback opens its page on flashbk.gg instead. Copy the link to a friend's clip when anyone with the link can watch it. Profiles, clip pages, and your account pages on flashbk.gg work on phones, and profiles load quickly there.
  • Sign in on flashbk.gg to manage your clips, profile, and friends from a browser, download your data, or sign out everywhere, the app included. The site uses only essential sign-in cookies, with no analytics or advertising cookies.
  • Every upload has a visibility: Only me, Friends, Anyone with the link, or Public on my profile. Once Cloud takes visibility choices, new uploads start as Only me, and the upload dialog lets you choose who can see the clip, name it, and tag it. Clips uploaded before 0.8 stay Anyone with the link.
  • Only me and Friends clips are kept off the public web and play only through short-lived links checked for each viewer. Get a new link turns the old link off.
  • The Cloud tab is redesigned. It scrolls from anywhere and has My clips and Account sections, joined by Feed and Friends once profiles open, with a strip that shows your storage, clips, uploads, and plan. Each limit has an (i) that explains how Cloud counts it.
  • My clips manages everything you've uploaded: search, sort, and filter by game, visibility, type, and date, in a list or a grid with each clip's poster, or its Library thumbnail while the poster loads. Click a poster, or double-click a clip, to open it on flashbk.gg, or to play it in Flashback's player when it has no page there you can open, and once Cloud takes visibility choices, click a clip's visibility to change it, from the list or the player. A clip whose visibility can't change right now says why when you click it, and what to do. Download your clips back to your PC, one at a time or several into a folder, with progress and Stop in My clips. A clip uploaded without a game takes the game of its copy in your Library. Change who can see many clips at once, or every clip from one game, and Flashback tells you which ones stayed as they were and why. Delete several at a time. Ctrl+A, Delete, F2, Enter, Esc, and Shift-click work as you'd expect.
  • Changing who can see clips, making new links, and downloading your data each have a daily limit per account, set well above everyday use; past it, Cloud asks you to try again tomorrow. Views from signed-in viewers stop counting on a clip after a daily limit, so throwaway accounts can't inflate them; the clip still opens.
  • Account shows your plan and usage, the upload queue, upload settings, your data export, and account deletion. Billing, plans, and Export stay available while an upload runs.
  • Subscribers can change plans right from the plan cards with Upgrade to and Switch to. A larger plan starts at once and you pay only the prorated difference for the rest of the billing period; if that payment doesn't go through, your plan stays as it was. A smaller plan also starts at once, and the unused time is credited to your next bill. Flashback shows what happens and the new plan's renewal terms before you confirm, and offers a smaller plan only when your cloud clips fit in it.
  • Deleting your Cloud account first shows what is deleted and what is kept, then asks you to type your @username, or DELETE if you have no profile. It cancels any paid plan (the current period isn't refunded), signs you out everywhere, deletes an uploaded profile picture, and takes your clips and profile off the web at once; seven days later, everything it listed as deleted is gone for good. Sign in again before then and choose Keep my account to put your clips and profile back, or Start a new account. A cancelled plan stays cancelled, and nothing on your PC is touched.
  • Automatic uploads for the games you choose. They're off by default. Uploads wait until you stop playing, meaning no game in front for two minutes, and pause if a game comes back. Choose Right away to upload while you play under an upload limit, 4 Mbit/s unless you change it; a clip that needs converting still waits until you stop playing.
  • Say "Flashback upload" or "Flashback upload that" to save a replay and upload it, with its clip link copied when the upload finishes. It works when Voice Controls are on and Voice upload is turned on in the Cloud tab.
  • Upload settings live in the Cloud tab. Each change is saved as you make it, leaves other unapplied settings alone, and never restarts capture. Uploads run one at a time in the background, carry on after Flashback restarts, and retry after a dropped connection. If your plan or storage can't take a clip, the queue pauses with one notice a day.
  • Captures with a copy on Cloud show an uploaded badge in the Library. Cloud clip dates follow your local calendar, so a clip uploaded in the evening no longer shows the next day's date, and Cloud confirmations appear in the window while it's open instead of in the tray.
  • Make montages. Select videos in the Library and choose Make montage, or add clips in the Editor's new Montage mode from the library picker or a file. Reorder, trim, and preview each clip and export them as one video: 2 to 20 clips, up to 30 minutes, at 1080p, 720p, or the first clip's size up to 1440p, and 30 or 60 FPS. A montage of one game's clips is saved in that game's folder and a mix of games in a Montages folder, your originals stay untouched, and a saved montage can be uploaded to Cloud like any clip.
  • Montages can have music. Add a song (MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG, or Opus), set its volume, where in the song it starts, and its own fade in and out, and choose whether a shorter song loops or plays once and fades out. Each clip's sound has its own volume and mute, the montage can fade in from black and out to black, and clips can crossfade by 0.2, 0.5, or 1 second. A montage with music keeps three audio tracks, the mix, the clips' sound, and the music, so you can remix it later. Drag clips to reorder them, or press Alt+Up and Alt+Down.
  • Tag your captures from their menu. Tags show on cards, every word you type in Library search matches names, games, and tags, and #tag shows only captures with that tag. Tags stay on this PC unless you upload the capture to Flashback Cloud.
  • Discord copies match Discord's current upload limits: 20 MB free, 50 MB Nitro Basic (and Level 2 boosted servers), 100 MB in a Level 3 boosted server, and 1 GB Nitro. Copies stay a little under the limit, and a bitrate cap keeps short trims for the larger limits from coming out bloated or asking for more free disk space than they need. A clip that is only just under its limit is now made smaller too, instead of being copied as is. The upload limit and format pickers no longer cut off their labels.
  • Point at a thumbnail in the Library or in Recent clips to play the clip with one click. Clip cards put Play before Edit, Edit always opens the clip in Trim, and Recent clips cards have Edit clip and the Library's More menu.
  • The Editor opens clips straight from the Library. Choose from library and From library open a picker with search, a game filter, your newest clips up front, thumbnails, lengths, and dates. Open file is still there.
  • Library dates show the year for clips from other years and follow the 12- or 24-hour clock you use in Windows. Captures are dated by when they were recorded: a copied or moved clip folder no longer shows every clip as made today, a replay is dated by when you pressed save, trims and Discord copies keep their source's time, and File Explorer shows the recording time as Media created.
  • Flashback follows time zone changes while it runs, in the tray too, so clip names, folders, and Library times use the new zone without a restart.
  • Fixed the static heard on voice in clips since 0.7.22. Flashback was cutting clean speech from USB audio interfaces and virtual cables into tiny gaps many times a second; it now writes captured audio back to back and only uses timestamps for real gaps. Existing clips can't be repaired; new recordings are clean.
  • Editable audio tracks are on by default, for new installs and for settings that already record game and desktop audio, and they no longer need "Include my microphone". Clips get a "Flashback mix" track that every player plays, a "Game and desktop" track, and a "Microphone" track when your microphone is on. ...

Flashback 0.7.41

Choose a tag to compare

@Riqqqque Riqqqque released this 03 Oct 01:07
Immutable release. Only release title and notes can be modified.

Flashback 0.7.41

A new icon, screenshot sharing for Flashback Cloud, and steadier audio in joined replays.

  • Flashback has a new icon: a bright dot with two fading echoes behind it, like the afterimage a moment leaves. It's in the taskbar, the tray, and the window.
  • Screenshots can be uploaded to Flashback Cloud from the Library, just like clips, once Cloud turns screenshot sharing on. Before a screenshot uploads, Flashback removes text notes, camera and location details, and timestamps from the uploaded copy. The file on your PC is never changed.
  • The editor's preview loads and plays again after you open a clip. Since 0.7.23 it could stay on the still frame and the Preview button did nothing.
  • Replays saved from several buffer segments keep their mixed audio lined up with the video at every join, instead of drifting by a few hundredths of a second.
  • Cancelling an export removes its unfinished file even when another program briefly holds it open.
  • A shortcut set to the extra key beside left Shift on many non-US keyboards is saved as that key, instead of being read back as the backslash key. If you set one before, set it again once.
  • A Library thumbnail never shows the old picture after a clip is replaced or deleted while its thumbnail is loading.
  • Changing the Library view or sort right before closing the window is kept when you then use the tray or reopen Flashback.
  • Signing out of Cloud stays signed out even if a sign-in refresh was still finishing. The session is ended on the server right away, or as soon as you're back online.
  • A Cloud account export that is too large, or arrives cut short, says so and leaves any file you already saved untouched.
  • If Cloud pauses screenshot uploads, a screenshot waiting to upload is cleared with a message instead of blocking your other uploads.
  • A paused Cloud upload saved by 0.7.40 or earlier can't be resumed after this update. The Cloud page says so; discard it and upload again from your original, which was never changed. A paused upload started by another Cloud account resumes once you sign in to that account.
  • A Cloud upload that finishes without a share link says so and points you to the Cloud library, instead of looking stuck.
  • If the Cloud page can't load your account, a Retry button tries again without leaving the page.
  • Deleting your Cloud account keeps the Cloud controls disabled until it finishes, and if the deletion fails, a paused upload it already removed no longer shows as ready to resume.
  • A clip just over 60 FPS is converted before it uploads, instead of being refused by Cloud at the end. Upload titles are tidied the same way Cloud tidies them.
  • Uninstalling Flashback removes the start-with-Windows entry only when it opens the copy being removed, so another copy of Flashback on the same PC keeps starting with Windows.
  • Flashback is now signed through Microsoft's code signing service, so Windows names its publisher when you install it. Because of that change, Flashback 0.7.40 and earlier can't install this update by themselves: they offer the installer instead. Run it over your current install; your settings and clips are kept.

Recording quality, frame-rate settings, audio routing, and saved preferences are unchanged.

Flashback 0.7.40

Choose a tag to compare

@Riqqqque Riqqqque released this 02 Oct 01:49
Immutable release. Only release title and notes can be modified.

Flashback 0.7.40

Flashback Cloud is built in, and saving is safer and easier to follow.

  • Flashback Cloud is now part of the app: sign in, pick a plan, and upload clips from the Library with the new Upload to Cloud button or the More menu. Each upload gets one clean share link, and your original file on your PC is never changed. Sign-up, uploads, and plans open from the server when Cloud launches, so nothing changes for you until then.
  • After you buy or change a plan in the browser, the Cloud tab updates by itself within a few seconds. A plan that's set to end shows the date it ends.
  • The storage limit now only counts and removes captures Flashback made. Other videos and pictures in your clip folder are never touched. If you choose a folder that already holds other media, Flashback offers to save into a Flashback subfolder instead.
  • Saving a clip now shows a "Clip saved" notification. Clicking a clip or screenshot notification, including from the Notification Center after a match, opens File Explorer with the file selected.
  • A replay shortcut pressed while the previous clip is still saving now waits its turn instead of being dropped. If the buffer is paused or starting, you get the error sound and a notice instead of silence.
  • Pausing the buffer from the tray stays paused when you change settings in the window. Start buffer no longer saves other settings you haven't applied.
  • When you set a shortcut, Esc cancels, and keys that would block normal typing on their own, like Enter or a single letter, are refused.
  • Clips and screenshots from a game on a second monitor are named and filed under that game. Game detection now reads only the game's file path, never its memory.
  • If the drive that holds the replay buffer fills up, Flashback says which drive to free up instead of restarting the capture over and over.
  • Closing the window during a trim or Discord export lets it finish in the tray. Quitting during an upload or export asks first, and closing with unapplied settings asks whether to apply them.
  • The window fits the screen on high-scaling laptop displays.
  • Updates resume where they left off after a restart, explain when the disk is full or the PC's clock is wrong, and offer the installer if an update can't be verified. Flashback now tells you when an update has finished.

Recording quality, frame-rate settings, audio routing, and saved preferences are unchanged.

Flashback 0.7.39

Choose a tag to compare

@Riqqqque Riqqqque released this 01 Oct 03:59
Immutable release. Only release title and notes can be modified.

Flashback 0.7.39

Flashback's new home is flashbk.gg.

  • Updates, downloads, help links, and Cloud sign-in now use flashbk.gg. Earlier versions check the old address and won't find this release, so install it once by hand from https://flashbk.gg. It installs over the old version, and your clips and settings stay where they are.
  • The App updates panel now has a Report a bug button. It opens the support form on flashbk.gg with your Flashback version already filled in.
  • The installer shows a cleaner splash: the Flashback name, the version, and a progress line. The app icons and artwork were redrawn to match.
  • Updates can now be verified against a Microsoft-verified publisher identity as well as Flashback's own certificate, so a later release can be signed through Microsoft without another manual reinstall.

Cloud sign-in, uploads, subscriptions, and share links stay switched off in this release. Recording, audio routing, and saved preferences are unchanged.

This release was published without the full hardware qualification run, by explicit owner decision. Signing, package smoke, checksums, and update-feed validation still apply.

Flashback 0.7.38

Choose a tag to compare

@Riqqqque Riqqqque released this 30 Sep 03:18
Immutable release. Only release title and notes can be modified.

Flashback 0.7.38

Lighter recording and correct library times.

  • Recording does less GPU work for every frame. Each frame used to be scaled into a temporary image and then copied three times on its way to the encoder; it is now scaled straight into the capture surface and copied once, directly into the encoder. On the test PC this cut Flashback's share of the GPU by about 12% while the mouse cursor is hidden, as it is during most matches. Saved clips look exactly the same.
  • The capture worker no longer restarts itself shortly after a monitor reconnects. Its health check mistook the normal rise in threads when recording resumed for a leak.
  • Screenshots, trimmed clips, and clips without saved details now show their time in your local time instead of UTC.
  • If per-game profiles had been switched off as a whole, Settings now shows them as inactive instead of active, and turning a profile on turns the feature back on for that profile only.

Recording quality, frame-rate settings, audio routing, and saved preferences are unchanged.

This release was published without the full hardware qualification run, by explicit owner decision. Signing, package smoke, checksums, and update-feed validation still apply.

Flashback 0.7.37

Choose a tag to compare

@Riqqqque Riqqqque released this 28 Sep 06:04
Immutable release. Only release title and notes can be modified.

Flashback 0.7.37

Steadier recording and lighter saves.

  • Recording no longer restarts the capture worker when the hardware encoder labels one frame with the previous frame's timestamp. Flashback now skips the stranded frame once later frames are encoded and requests a keyframe so playback resynchronizes immediately. On the test PC this caused the capture restarts and short recording gaps seen one to four times a day.
  • Scaled recording (for example 1080p from a 1440p monitor) keeps each cursor shape separately, so a clip no longer shows the wrong cursor after the pointer changes shape.
  • Saving a replay, trimming, and preview extraction run FFmpeg below normal priority, so saving during a match yields CPU to the game.
  • The capture worker's two-second health check reads its own counters directly instead of scanning every process on the PC.
  • If the optional keystroke overlay ever hits an unexpected input error, only the overlay stops; Flashback and recording keep running.
  • The ZIP uninstaller only removes startup entries that launch the ZIP copy, so it no longer disables startup for a normally installed Flashback.

Recording quality, frame-rate settings, audio routing, and saved preferences are unchanged.

This release was published without the full hardware qualification run, by explicit owner decision. Signing, package smoke, checksums, and update-feed validation still apply.

Flashback 0.7.36

Choose a tag to compare

@Riqqqque Riqqqque released this 27 Sep 07:43
Immutable release. Only release title and notes can be modified.

Flashback 0.7.36

Lighter scaled recording, clearer storage review, and better encoder diagnostics.

  • Recording at a lower resolution than the display (for example 1080p from a 1440p monitor) reuses its GPU resize resources instead of creating a new vertex buffer and two views for every captured frame.
  • When the hardware encoder's packet queue fills and the capture worker has to restart, the log now records whether one missing encoder output or a full encoder stall caused it. The restart itself is unchanged in this release.
  • Storage review shows live progress with a counter for each stage (checking captures, comparing sizes, verifying duplicates) instead of only the waiting cursor.
  • Pressing Escape cancels a running storage review or capture health check, the same as the Cancel button.
  • Scrollbars keep their slim 10px width without clipping the thumb, and panels with mixed corner radii clip their content cleanly.

Recording quality, frame-rate settings, audio routing, and saved preferences are unchanged.

This release was published without the full hardware qualification run, by explicit owner decision. Signing, package smoke, checksums, and update-feed validation still apply.
