Cloud Sync for RetroArch (WebDAV + Koofr)

This guide details how to set up automatic synchronization for your saves and save states in RetroArch using the native WebDAV protocol.

We will use Koofr as our cloud provider since it offers 10 GB for free and features native WebDAV support.

Phase 1: Creating a Koofr account

RetroArch needs a server that understands the WebDAV file transfer protocol.

  1. Open your web browser and go to Koofr.eu.
  2. Click on Create account.
  3. Fill in your details (name, email, and a secure password) and complete the registration.
  4. Verify your account using the link sent to your email.

Phase 2: Creating the cloud folder

For RetroArch to keep things organized and avoid mixing your game saves with other files, we must assign it an exclusive directory.

  1. Log into your Koofr account from your browser.
  2. On the main screen (the root of your space), click the Add button or the new folder icon.
  3. Create a folder and name it exactly RetroArch (respecting the initial capital letter).
  4. Enter the folder to confirm it is completely empty.

Phase 3: Cloud setup (App Password)

For security reasons, Koofr does not allow third-party applications (like RetroArch) to connect using your main password. You must generate a specific app password.

  1. On the Koofr website, click your profile picture or name in the top right corner and go to Preferences.
  2. On the left side menu, select Password.
  3. Scroll down to the App passwords section.
  4. In the text field, type a name to identify your console (e.g., KorikiOS_Miyoo).
  5. Click Generate.
  6. An automatically generated 16-character password will appear. Copy and save it; you will need it in the next step. You must enter it all together, without spaces.

Phase 4: RetroArch configuration

Now we will give RetroArch the instructions to connect to your new folder every time you play.

  1. Turn on your console and open RetroArch.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Saving > Cloud Sync.

Configure the menu options exactly like this:

  • Cloud Sync Server: Select WebDAV.
  • Storage URL: Type https://app.koofr.net/dav/Koofr/RetroArch (Pay special attention to the path and capitalization).
  • Username: Type the email you used to register on Koofr.
  • Password: Type the 16-character password generated in Phase 3 (without spaces).

Sync Settings (Behavior Rules)

At the top of that same Cloud Sync menu, adjust these parameters to optimize performance and data security:

  • Enable Cloud Sync: ON (Turns on the main engine).
  • Destructive Cloud Sync: OFF (Recommended. Protects your local files in case you play offline and then connect; prevents an outdated cloud from overwriting your recent progress).
  • Sync Saves: ON (Mandatory. Uploads and downloads .srm files and Save States).
  • Sync Configuration Files: OFF (Recommended. Prevents button or video configurations from this console from downloading to different devices, which could break their controls).
  • Sync Thumbnails: OFF (Recommended. Images are heavy and will cause games to take too long to open and close due to the network transfer).

Phase 5: Final Verification

  1. Go back to the RetroArch Main Menu.
  2. Select Sync Now.
  3. If all the data is correct, you will see an on-screen notification confirming the task was successful.

From now on, RetroArch will invisibly connect to Koofr right when loading a game and upon safely closing it.
