Sill 0.4.0
Sill for Mac 0.4.0 pairs your iPhone and iPad at home: by default only the devices you pair can connect to your Mac, and every connection is encrypted.
Update Sill on your iPhone and iPad too. This release goes with Sill for iPhone and iPad 0.5 (2) or later, and at home each needs the other: an iPhone or iPad with an older Sill can't connect to this Mac on your network (the Sill menu then says "An iPhone or iPad Needs Sill Updated"), and the new iPhone and iPad app shows a Mac with Sill for Mac 0.3.1 or earlier as "Update Sill". Sill for iPhone and iPad has been on the App Store since October 8, 2026: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6816359860. If you build it from source, build it from this release's tag.
Pair each device again after you update. After you update Sill for Mac to 0.4.0, each iPhone and iPad pairs with it once more, also one you paired for Remote Access before: 0.4.0 keeps its keys in a safer place and starts there with a new key, so no earlier pairing counts.
New in 0.4.0
- Pairing at home. Each iPhone or iPad pairs once. Tap your Mac on the device, and your Mac opens its pairing window by itself: scan the QR code, or type the 12 digits. Over a USB cable the device pairs by itself while your Mac is unlocked, and your Mac shows a notice with Remove. Connections on your network, over the cable and over Direct Wireless Connection now use TLS 1.3, as Remote Access always did, with each end pinned to the other's key once they are paired.
- Settings › Devices, a new tab: the devices you paired (moved from Remote Access), with rename and Remove, Pair iPhone or iPad…, and Require pairing, on by default. Turned off, any device on your network can connect without pairing, still encrypted.
- The menus of the app you're using, on your iPhone or iPad: in the iPad's own menu bar on iPadOS 26 or later, and behind a Menus button in the bar. Sill for Mac reads each menu as you open it and chooses the item you pick, through Accessibility. Never the Apple menu, never Sill's own.
- Three-finger gestures: swipe up for Mission Control, down for App Exposé, left and right between Spaces, pinch for Apps, spread for Show Desktop. Sill uses the keyboard shortcuts your Mac has for them (System Settings › Keyboard › Keyboard Shortcuts); one that is turned off there does nothing. So far they have been tried on macOS 27 only.
- Slow connections: a large keyframe no longer stalls a stream away from home for seconds at a time, and with Sill for iPhone and iPad 0.5 (2) a slow link no longer ends the session while a large frame is still on its way.
- Keys in a safer place: Sill for Mac now keeps its keys and the list of devices you paired in a part of your Mac's keychain that only Sill can read, and that never leaves this Mac.
- Fixed: after the Spotlight key, a key of the key row or a latched ⌘ with a key, ⌘ no longer stays down on your Mac, so the next tap is a plain click. Every key's release leaves down only the keys still held, and shortcuts from your iPhone or iPad press their modifier keys as a keyboard does.
Requirements. A Mac with Apple silicon on macOS 14 or later, and Sill for iPhone and iPad 0.5 (2) or later.
Good to know. Remote Access, over Tailscale or another VPN you run, is still off by default. Once it is on, a device you paired at home learns how to reach your Mac from other networks the next time it connects at home. Once a day Sill asks GitHub whether a newer version exists and never downloads anything by itself.
