Utter 0.6.2 (beta)
Utter now updates itself. When a new version is out, About says so. Press Install and restart: Utter downloads it, checks its signature, swaps itself for the new version and opens again, keeping your settings and words. It works however you installed Utter, from the download or with Homebrew.
- Nothing downloads until you press the button. Checking for updates stays off unless you switch on Check automatically.
- Every update is signed, and Utter only installs one whose signature matches the key built into it, naming the version it says it is.
This one you install by hand. 0.6.0 and earlier can't update themselves yet, so download this version once (or run brew upgrade --cask shantirmizi/tap/utter). From here on, it's one button.
Signed and notarised. Apple silicon, macOS 12 or later.
Utter 0.6.0 (beta)
A new layout. The sidebar is now Home, History and Words, then Settings: Hotkeys, Speech, Cleanup, AI provider, Privacy and General. Each setting lives in one place.
- Home has the practice box, your last dictation and how long it took. History is its own page, with search, Fix and how often you left a dictation as typed.
- Privacy gathers everything Utter keeps or reads, with a plain summary of what leaves your Mac for your settings.
- AI provider is where you pick the provider, key and model. Cleanup and rewrite both use it.
- General has appearance and the permissions, and two new settings: Open at login, and a microphone picker for when you don't want the system default.
- The Settings group folds away, and stays folded until you open it again.
fn is the default hotkey. Hold fn to talk, double-tap it for hands-free. A hotkey you already picked is kept.
More accurate.
- New installs start on the Small speech model, which hears names and jargon far better than Base.
- Each piece of a long dictation is heard with what came before, so a pause no longer splits a sentence. Accurate (the default) tidies the whole thing once you let go; Quick tidies as you talk.
- Cleanup keeps every point you made and your tone, and falls back to your exact words if it would drop something.
- Wind, fans and silence no longer turn into words. A short "Thanks." or a whisper still comes through.
- About 140 tech names (TypeScript, Kubernetes, Postgres…) are spelled right out of the box.
- Send nearby text to cleanup (off by default) lets cleanup fix a misheard word from what you're writing about.
Rewrite says each thing once. It regroups a rambling dictation by topic and never opens with a remark about its job.
brew upgrade --cask shantirmizi/tap/utterSigned and notarised. Apple silicon, macOS 12 or later.
Utter 0.5.2 (beta)
Light or dark, your choice. About now has an Appearance setting: System follows your Mac, or pick Light or Dark to keep Utter that way. The status pill follows too.
A model picker that fits. Cleanup's model field opens a list in the app's own style, right under the field, with the current model ticked and type-to-filter. Speech models a provider lists (which can't tidy text) are left out.
Install with Homebrew.
brew install --cask shantirmizi/tap/utterApple Silicon, macOS 12 or later. Signed and notarised.
Utter 0.5.1 (beta)
Beta. A small one.
- Provider logos in Cleanup. Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter and Ollama now show their marks on the provider tiles, in one colour so they match the rest of the app in light and dark. Other gets a plug.
Signed and notarised. Apple silicon, macOS 12 or later.
Utter 0.5.0 (beta)
Beta. A new look, and a calmer one.
New interface
- Quiet in light, Graphite in dark, following your Mac. The system font, one big value per card, and colour only when something needs you: red only when dictation can't happen.
- A sidebar window. Try it, Words, then Settings (Hotkey, Speech model, Cleanup, Permissions), and a status card that always says whether Utter is ready. If it isn't, it names the one problem and opens the fix.
- A new mark: voice bars trailing into a text cursor.
- First run has a picture for each step.
New things
- Fix Last Word… in the menu bar opens your last dictation ready to correct. In Try it you can now drag across words to fix a few at once.
- Removed words stay under Words for 30 days, with what they were heard as, so you can restore them.
- Language for the Large model: detect automatically, or tell it what you speak.
- Stop a speech model download.
- About, with the version and an update check. It only asks GitHub when you press Check for updates, or once a day if you switch on Check automatically (off by default).
- The menu bar shows Utter's status and offers the fix. Its icon moves while Utter listens or works, and shows a dot when it needs you.
Fixed
- Quitting Utter no longer shows "Utter quit unexpectedly".
Signed and notarised. Apple silicon, macOS 12 or later.
Utter 0.4.0 (beta)
Beta. Utter now learns your words.
Words
- Words has its own tab. Add the names and jargon Utter gets wrong, spelled your way.
- Heard as. Tell a word what Utter writes by mistake (Claude, heard as "cloud"). Cleanup puts it right when the sentence is about your word ("ask cloud to summarise this") and leaves it alone when it is not ("the cloud bill went up"). Needs cleanup set up.
- Fix a word. Press Fix on any dictation in Try it and click the word that came out wrong. It is corrected there and remembered.
- Learns from your corrections. Change a word Utter just typed into the name it misheard, and Utter adds it and says so in the pill. Undo Learning in the menu bar, or Undo on the Words tab, takes it back for good. Utter reads only the text box it typed into, for at most a minute, and keeps nothing but the word. Can be switched off.
- Names on screen. When you start dictating, the names in the window in front (people in a thread, functions in your editor) are used as hints for that dictation, so they are spelled the way the screen spells them. A name you then say is offered as a suggestion; nothing is added without you. Can be switched off.
- Add a Word… in the menu bar.
Signed and notarised. Apple silicon, macOS 12 or later.
Utter 0.3.0 (beta)
Utter 0.3.0 is the first beta. Free, open-source voice dictation for macOS: hold a key, speak, let go, and clean, well-formatted text appears in whatever app you are typing in.
Download: Utter-apple-silicon.dmg below. Apple Silicon Macs (M1 or later), macOS 12 or later.
What it does
- Fast. Speech is transcribed on your Mac while you are still talking, and tidied a paragraph at a time, so even a long dictation goes in a moment after you let go.
- Private by default. Audio never leaves your Mac. No account, no analytics.
- Writes for where you are. Email in Mail or Gmail, casual in Slack, a clear prompt in Claude or ChatGPT, exact identifiers in code editors.
- Your model, or none. Tidy with Groq, Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter or a local model through Ollama, with your own key.
- One key. Hold fn (globe) to talk; double-tap for hands-free. Or use any key combination.
- Rewrite and edit by voice. A second hotkey rewrites what you said in a style you pick, or, with text selected, changes it the way you ask.
- Your words and your history. A personal dictionary for names and jargon, and your recent dictations kept on your Mac to copy again.
- Tidy text. Short paragraphs, lists where you name several things, no em dashes.
Install
- Open the DMG and drag Utter into Applications.
- Open Utter. It is signed with a Developer ID and notarised by Apple, so it opens like any other app.
- Follow the welcome screens: allow the microphone and Accessibility, and let the speech model download.
Permissions now survive updates.
It's a beta
Tested day to day on one Mac (M1 Pro). Please report anything odd through the issue forms.

Utter 0.2.12
Utter is free, open-source voice dictation for macOS: hold a hotkey, speak, release, and the text lands in whatever app you are using.
Download: Utter-apple-silicon.dmg below. Apple Silicon Macs (M1 or later), macOS 12 or later.
New in 0.2.12
- Groq's reasoning models work well for cleanup. With openai/gpt-oss-20b or gpt-oss-120b, Utter asks for low reasoning effort and keeps the reasoning out of your text. Qwen 3 models are asked not to reason at all. Any reasoning that still turns up in think tags is removed.
Also in 0.2.11
- Transcribes and tidies while you talk, so long dictations go in a fraction of a second after you let go. Short, clean dictations skip the model.
Signed with a Developer ID, so permissions survive updates. Not yet notarised: the first launch needs Open Anyway in System Settings > Privacy & Security.

Utter 0.2.11
Utter is free, open-source voice dictation for macOS: hold a hotkey, speak, release, and the text lands in whatever app you are using.
Download: Utter-apple-silicon.dmg below. Apple Silicon Macs (M1 or later), macOS 12 or later.
New in 0.2.11: much faster
- Works while you talk. At each pause, what you have said so far is transcribed and tidied in the background. When you let go, only the last few seconds are left. In testing, a 95-second dictation went in 0.3 s after release instead of 17 s.
- No wait for clean speech. A short dictation with nothing to fix goes straight in.
- The local model stays loaded for an hour between dictations, instead of Ollama's five minutes.
Signed
This build is signed with a Developer ID, so macOS keeps Utter's Microphone and Accessibility permissions across future updates. It is not yet notarised: the first launch still needs Open Anyway in System Settings > Privacy & Security.

Utter 0.2.10
Utter is free, open-source voice dictation for macOS: hold a hotkey, speak, release, and the text lands in whatever app you are using.
Download: Utter-apple-silicon.dmg below. Apple Silicon Macs (M1 or later), macOS 12 or later.
New in 0.2.10
- No emoji picker with fn, by default. While fn is your dictation key, Utter switches macOS's own 🌐 action off and puts it back when you quit or choose another hotkey. You can turn this off on the Hotkey tab.
- No stale "A hotkey isn't working" warning. The window rechecks every second, so the warning goes away as soon as fn starts working.
Updating
Replace the app in Applications. macOS treats each unsigned update as a new app: allow the microphone again, and under Permissions click Reset it for Accessibility, then switch Utter on.
