Utter is free, open-source voice dictation for macOS: hold a hotkey, speak, release, and the text lands in whatever app you are using.

Download: Utter-apple-silicon.dmg below. Apple Silicon Macs (M1 or later), macOS 12 or later.

New in 0.2.12

  • Groq's reasoning models work well for cleanup. With openai/gpt-oss-20b or gpt-oss-120b, Utter asks for low reasoning effort and keeps the reasoning out of your text. Qwen 3 models are asked not to reason at all. Any reasoning that still turns up in think tags is removed.

Also in 0.2.11

  • Transcribes and tidies while you talk, so long dictations go in a fraction of a second after you let go. Short, clean dictations skip the model.

Signed with a Developer ID, so permissions survive updates. Not yet notarised: the first launch needs Open Anyway in System Settings > Privacy & Security.
